‘Maa Beta’ (1962) was produced by Kuldeep Sehgal under the banner of Tasveeristan and was directed by Lekhraj Bhakri. The cast included Nirupa Roy, Manoj Kumar, Ameeta, Lalita Pawar, I S Johar, Manorama, Tarun Bose, Sheela Ramani, Manmohan Krishan, Kumar , Vijay Dutt, Leela Mishra, Indira Bansal, Brahm Dutt, Madhumati etc. The film is a family drama with a mix of light comedy and melodrama.

The film’s director, Lekhraj Bhakri was the younger brother of Producer-lyricist and writer, Mulkraj Bhakri who was associated with Producer Kuldeep Sehgal of Kuldeep Pictures in Lahore whose film, ‘Papeeha Re’ (1948) was under production there. However, on the eve of independence in 1947, communal riots broke out in Lahore. Kuldeep Sehgal left Lahore along with Mulkraj Bhakri, Lekhraj Bhakri, some actors and crew members and landed in Mumbai almost empty-ended. According to the character actor Jankidas, it was Mulkraj Bhakri who reorganised some of the actors and crew members migrated from Lahore., arranged finances, got completed and released ‘Papeeha Re’ (1948). With the experience gained, he started the film productions with himself or Kuldeep Sehgal as producer. Most of their films were directed by Lekhraj Bhakri in Mumbai. “Maa Beta” (1962) was one such film.

The story of the film is as under:

Ganga (Tarun Bose) and his wife, Rama (Nirupa Roy) stays with his elder brother Bishan (I S Johar) and his dominating wife, Krishna Devi (Manorama). Although Ganga is in service, he is financially dependent on Bishan. Krishna Devi exploits the situation by forcing Rama to do all the household works. One day, due to some arguments between the two brothers, Bishan asks Ganga to leave the house on the instigation of Krishna Devi.

Ganga and his pregnant wife settle in their new house. But they cannot sustain themselves financially. Rameshwari assures him that she is going to start a home-based cottage industry in a small scale in which she excels in embroidery, doll making, painted pottery etc. Ganga markets the products. Their business expands and they become wealthy enough to stay in a bungalow.

In Bishan’s household, things have turned bad with family facing the financial difficulties due to losses in his business and he is in the verge of losing his house. Krishna sends her maid servant, Rampyari (Leela Mishra) to Rama with the intention of extracting financial help from her in the pretext of ill-health of Bishan because of which his business is down. Rama requests Ganga to see his elder brother, Bishan and also take his cheque book in case Bishan requires any financial help. He goes and meet Bishan and hands over a cheque of Rs.10000/- to Bishan. But jealousy and greed has no limit. While Ganga is about to take leave of Bishan, Krishna Devi in connivance with Rampyari offer a glass of juice to Ganga mixed with slow poisonous substance.

After a week or so, Ganga losses his balance of mind, He becomes irritated and behaves strangely. In this condition, one day, he accidentally falls from a hill while on holiday and he is presumed killed. Rama takes charge of the business despite being in advance stage of her pregnancy. She gives birth to a boy. However, in the hospital, her new born boy goes missing. It transpires that Rampyari has abducted the new born boy at the behest of Krishna Devi so that her son, Rajinder (Vijay Dutt) becomes the heir to Rameshwari’s property after her death. For Rampyari, Rameshwari’s abducted infant son is a boon for her daughter, Muniya (Sheila Ramani) whose marriage is on the rock due to her being childless for a long time and her husband, Charandas (Manmohan Krishan) was planning to bring a new wife.

When Charandas comes to know that they have got a baby boy abandoned by her mother, he is happy to adopt but at the same time, he is worried in case the child’s mother claims the baby boy later. So, they decides to shift to Delhi. Coincidentally, he gets the job in Rama’s house with an outhouse for his family. In Bishan’s household, the maid, Rampyari lives in fear if the secrets of Rameshwari’s infant abduction comes to light. So, she decides to shift to her native place in Varanasi.

After some years, Krishna Devi’s son, Rajinder (Vijay Dutt) and Muniya’s adopted son, Keshav (Manoj Kumar) virtually grow together in Rama’s house. However, there is always some confrontations between Rajinder and Keshav. As a result, Charandas and his wife decide to leave Rama’s out house to stay somewhere else. Keshav takes the tuition job for Reeta (Ameeta) in her house owned by her wealthy mother (Lalita Pawar). During the period, Keshav shows his inclination to investigate the missing son of Rama. In his investigation, he feels that Rampyari, who was working in Bishan’s household for a long time and also known to Rama may be able to shed some light.

In the meanwhile, Bishan puts pressure on Rama to adopt his son, Rajinder so that he can get married to Reeta. Rama is prepared to agree provided his lost son is found. All these developments create her suspicion on Bishan and Krishna Devi about their intentions. When Keshav informs Rama that he is leaving for Varanasi on some investigation work, she insists on accompanying him just to avoid Bishan’s pressure. He agrees without revealing her that he is going to meet Rampyari.

In Varanasi, Keshav and Rama meets Rampyari who spills the secret as she no longer wants to live in fears. In a nearby temple, Rameshwari meets a Sadhu who turns out to be her missing husband, Ganga who has lost memory due to the effect of slow poison given to him by way of juice by Krishna Devi. They all returns to Delhi and Rampyari confesses the crime in front of police. Police arrests Bishan, Krishna Devi and Rampyari. In the court, the judge pronounces imprisonments to all of them of varying period. After learning what his parents have done, Rajinder commits suicide. Rameshwari unites with her husband, Ganga and the lost son, Keshav, who in turns, unites with Reeta.

The film had six songs written by Prem Dhawan which were set to music by Hemant Kumar. Four songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 5th song, ‘wo kaun si mushkil hai jo na ho sake aasaan’ rendered by Mohammed Rafi. It is a background song with motivational lyrics. The main song (Part-1) gets played while Nirupa Roy and Tarun Bose seem happy about their new venture to sustain themselves. The song has an additional stanza (Part-2) which gets played twice in the background under two different scenarios.

The context of the song is Ganga (Tarun Bose) with his pregnant wife, Rama (Nirupa Roy), is forced to leave the joint family house due to pressure from his elder brother, Bishan (I S Johar). They set up their own house. Tarun Bose is unable to reconcile himself to the situation where he has to leave the joint family house as he is financially dependent on Bishan. He is worried about how to survive financially. His wife, Nirupa Roy is unperturbed and says that she would start a small-scale cottage industry business at home and he would sell the products in the market. The song gets played in the background when he witnesses her works. As the song progresses so also the expansion of their cottage industry business.

An additional stanza of the song (Part-2) appears twice in the film as a background snippets. First, at the time when Charandas (Manmohan Krishan) with his wife, Muniya (Shela Ramani) and their adopted infant son gets employment in Rama’s household. Their adopted infant is the missing newborn son of Rama which she is unaware of. Second, when Rama on a visit to Varanasi, meets a Sadhu who turns out to be her husband, Ganga (Tarun Bose) who was presumed dead when he fell down from a hillock. However, he is unable to recognise Rama as he has lost his memory.

Sadanand Ji

Thanks for the post. I have not heard this nice song before.

However the tune is akin to few others I have heard — Like ‘tu hindu banega na musalman…. from ‘Dhool ka phool’ 🙂

Satish ji,

Your are right.

The tune of ‘tu hindu banega na musalmaan banega’ by N Datta is also based on his own song ‘kyaa kyaa na sitam tujh pe huye’ from ‘Mohini’ (1957). I intend to cover this song in one of my forthcoming articles for the Blog.

Good Evening Sir,

Those were good old days, where most of Music directors like SJ, Naushad, Khayyam, etc, and also from south, were composing songs based on pure classic Ragas, hence similarity concedes.

Thanks for introducing this motivational songs. It sounds more like a mid 50’s song. Anyway the Rafi songs by Hemant Kumar have a vintage quality in themselves. Take the solos “Jaane kahan dekha hai, kahan dekha hai tumhen” and “Tera husn rahe mera ishq rahe”. These are understated and underrated, a genre in themselves. A rare one too. This could be the last such song, to appear in the blog.

The heading of the post needs to be changed to “Mushkil”.

You are right Nahm ji.

I was surprised as to how this song remained out of your radar.

My radar is overrated :-), but this could be saved somewhere in the computer as a song to be posted, and I never went back to it.

Since the day I read the post and heard the song, the line “woh kaun si mehfil hai jahan tu nahi maujood” or something similar in the same tune is on my mind and I am thinking there is another song in the same tune. It turns out that it is a line in Mukesh-Hasrat- SJ’s “O mehbooba” in “Sangam”.
