‘Isi Kaa Naam Duniyaa Hai’ (1962) was produced by Huda Bihari and was directed by Shakti Samanta. The cast included Ashok Kumar, Shyama, Mehmood, Sahira, K N Singh, Nazir Hussain, Lalita Kumari, Helen, Om Prakash, Kundan, Rajan Kapoor, Susheel Kumar, Baby Farida, Lata Sinha etc. This was Huda Bihari’s first film as a producer. He has also produced ‘Do Badan; (1966) and had produced and directed ‘Jogi’ (1978). Huda Bihari is the brother of lyricist, S H Bihari.

‘Isi Kaa Naam Duniyaa Hai’ (1962) is one of the least known among the films directed by Shakti Samanta despite having an impressive cast in the film. I recently watched the film in which I got the impression that Shakti Samanta’s heart was not in the film as he may have realised that he had chosen the wrong film to direct. Before this film, Shakti Samanta was known for his musical thrillers like ‘Inspector’ (1956), ‘Howrah Bridge’ (1958), ‘Jaali Note’ (1960), ‘Singapore’ (1960) and ‘China Town’ (1962). The film under discussion was prominently a social film. With a predictable story and a weak screenplay, I guess, the main actors may have also lost interest in giving their best performances. Shyama and Mehmood have been underutilised. Music director, Ravi’s song compositions sounded average to me. Perhaps, he was also not motivated to give his best as most of the songs in the film appears to be fitted in the scenes without much of the context.

The story of the film is as under:

Motiram (Nazir Hussain), a widower and a textile mill worker is the father of two children, Ramesh (Susheel Kumar) and Asha (Baby Farida). He marries Radha (Lalita Kumari) despite his children not liking to have a stepmother. The result is that there is confrontations between the children and the stepmother. One day, both Raja and Asha run away from the house and land in Mumbai. They survive on selling miscellaneous items on the pavements. They are not used to live in a harsh environment but they are equally not ready to face the harsh treatments from their stepmother. So they continue to stay in Mumbai.

Asha is admitted in a school entailing some additional expenses. However, the money Ramesh earns in not enough for take care day to day expenses. When he sees one of his friends has lots of money which he has earned through gambling, Ramesh is tempted to try his luck in gambling. And his luck favours him. As he grows, Ramesh becomes Raja (Ashok Kumar), an expert gambler in playing cards. Now, he has his own house to stay and his sister, Asha (Sahira) stays in a college hostel for completing her higher studies.

Verma (K N Singh) who runs a gambling den offers Raja an attractive monetary package to join his gambling den which he agrees. He has met an orphan boy who was seeking from him some money to eat. Raja has helped him. He meets him once again when he was cleaning a taxi. The orphan boy turns out to be girl, Kamla (Shyama) who has been using the boy’s dress to conceal her identity. She was the daughter of a decoit who had served a jail term. Because of this, Kamla’s marriage could not take place with this stigma and her father died of shock. With double stigmas, Kamla was abandoned by the society. Kamla has developed an affinity toward Raja because he is the first person who has treated her with dignity and also helped her monetarily.

In the meanwhile, Motiram has met with an accident while working in the mill losing his one hand. The mill management terminates his services with a monetary compensation which he plans to use in a business with his wife’s uncle who has a cloth shop in Mumbai. He migrates to Mumbai and joins the cloth shop. Over a period of time, he starts his own cloth shop. His business flourishes and he has become wealthy. Coincidentally, Raja and Asha have gone to Motiram’s shop for buying some cloth for Asha before she goes back to her hostel.

Shyam (Mehmood) has met Asha in the college drama festival and he has fallen in love with her. However, Asha thinks him as a roadside Romeo type person without knowing that he is in police force as an Inspector. His identity is revealed when her college friend, Sheela (Lata Sinha) turns out to be Shyam’s sister. Raja is also present on the eve of college drama festival where his sister Asha is a participant. However, after knowing Shyam’s status as police inspector, he walks out of the college in the pretext of some work. Before that Shyam cautions Raja that he has seen him with Verma and it is better that he keeps a distance from him.

Realising that his association with Verma will be detrimental to Asha’s marriage, Raja parts with Verma and tries other vocational jobs. But they all become short-lived because of his background. Sheela has been advocating that Shyam should get married and she suggests Asha’s name which her father agrees to proceed. For Asha’s marriage, Raja borrows money from Verma and signs IOU without reading. Verma has conveniently added a clause that loan is given to Raja for his sister’s marriage with him.

The marriage of Asha with Shyam is finalised. Raja has made purchases for the marriage out of the money given by Verma from Motiram’s shop. He has also taken a house on rent from Motiram When Verma comes to know that Asha is getting married to Shyam, he asks Raja to repay the loan at once as he has broken the terms of the loan. Since he is unemployed, Raja is constraint to steal the money from Motiram’s shop. With the stolen money, Raja goes to Verma’s house to return his loan. However, due to some arguments which become violent, Verma falls from the railings of his balcony and get seriously injured. Before dying, he blames Raja for his injuries. Police arrest Raja on the charge of attempted murder of Verma at a time when Asha’s marriage ceremony with Shyam is about to end.

In the meanwhile, Motiram visits Raja’s room which he has given to him on rent. He finds a photo frame of his deceased wife hanging on the wall. He is very happy that he has found his lost son and daughter. During the court hearing, Raja is given imprisonment for 8-years for his crime though he is absolved from killing Verma. Shyam affirms his faith in his wife, Asha while Kamla assures Raja that she will take care of his parents and will await for him after completion of his jail term.

The film had eight songs written by S H Bihari which were set to music by Ravi. Four songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 5th song, ‘akad kar jaa rahe hain jaayiye pachhtaayiyegaa’ rendered by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle which is picturised on Mehmood and Sahira. It is a teasing song between two lovers which ends with reconciliation. The style of the song composition sounds like that of O P Nayyar.

The context of the song is that Asha (Sahira) and Shyam (Mehmood) who are in love with each other, suddenly decided to play pranks without the knowledge of each other, pretending that they are not interested in continuing their relationship. When the pranks goes out of control, Asha walks out of Shyam’s house and Shyam follows her in his cycle with a teasing (nok-jhonk) song.

Song-Akad kar jaa rahe hain jaaiye pachhtaaiyegaa (Isi Ka Naam Duniya Hai)(1962) Singers-Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics-S H Bihari, MD-Ravi

Lyrics:

akad kar jaa rahe hain jaayiye pachhtaayiyegaa
hamaare jaisa dilwaala kaheen na paayiyegaa
hamaare jaisa dilwaala kaheen na paayiyegaa
haseenon se zara bachiye na yoon takraayiyegaa
bahut hoshiyaar baniyegaa to dhokha khaayiyegaa
hoon
bahut hoshiyaar baniyegaa to dhokha khaayiyegaa

mohabbat kaa safar ye bada lamba safar hai
hamaare saathh chaliye bhatak jaane ka dar hai
na kaajiye fikr meree
mujhe apnee khabar hai
musaafir jaanta hai
usse jaana kidhar hai

sambhal kar paavn rakhiye warna thokar khaayiyegaa
hamaare jaisa dilwaala kaheen na paayiyegaa
hamaare jaisa dilwaala kaheen na paayiyegaa

salaamat hai adaayen to deewaane bahut hain
jalegee shama jab tak to parwaane bahut hain

samajh kaa pher hai ye
tumhaaree kyaa khata hai
bigadnaa roothhnaa to haseenon kee ada hai
inheen baaton pe ab to apna dil bahlaayiyegaa
bahut hoshiyaar baniyegaa to dhokhaa khaayiyegaa
bahut hoshiyaar baniyegaa to dhokhaa khaayiyegaa

hato chhodo ye jhagde
chalo jee tumse haare
zara ik baar phir se wahee pahle ishaare
na karnaa aarzoo bhee mohabbat kee dobaara
bada kaatil hai meree nigaahon kaa ishaara

na honge ham to kisko ye ada dikhlaayiyegaa
hamaare jaisa dilwaala kaheen na paayiyegaa
hamaare jaisa dilwaala kaheen na paayiyegaa
haseenon se zara bachiye na yoon takraayiyegaa
bahut hoshiyaar baniyegaa to dhokhaa khaayiyegaa
bahut hoshiyaar baniyegaa to dhokhaa khaayiyegaa
