‘Ooparwaala Jaane'(1977) was produced and directed by Naresh Saigal. The cast included Vinod Mehra and Rehana Sultan in the lead roles supported by Abhi Bhattacharya, Shailesh Kumar, Lalita Kumari, Asit Sen, Laxmi Chhaya, Ratna, Jasbir, Rajan Haksar etc. The film was released on November 28, 1977.
The film’s director, Naresh Saigal is a younger brother of producer-director-writer, Ramesh Saigal. Another brother, Kishan Saigal is a Cinematographer whose son is actor, Sumeet Saigal. Naresh Saigal has directed films like ‘Rajdhani’ (1956), ‘Night Club’ (1958), ‘Main Nashe Mein Hoon’ (1959), ‘Ujaala’ (1959), ‘Boy Friend’ (1961), ‘Pyaar Kaa Bandhan’ (1963), ‘Jab Yaad Kisi Ki Aati Hai’ (1967), ‘Maharaja’ (1970) etc.
I was not aware of this film and over the period, it seems to have become an obscure film. The film has recently surfaced on one of the video sharing platforms which I have watched a couple of days back. The is a suspense thriller. The video of the film seems to have been made by copying from VHS tape from a digital camera. Evidently, both video and audio quality are less than average quality. The video clip of the film appears to have been heavily edited as the presentation of the story is disjointed. With these limitations, I give below the story of the film:
Diwan Dinanath (Abhi Bhattacharya) is a close friend of Rita Kapoor’s (Rehana Sultan) father who was a businessman before his untimely death by a big boulder hit. Since he had no close relatives, in his Will, he had appointed Diwan to look after Rita and his vast property. When Rita turns 18, the entire property will have to be transferred in her name.
Years pass and Rita has grown up. While travelling to London, the ship in which she was traveling gets caught in a storm causing a head injury to her. When she returns from London, Vijay (Sailesh Kumar) goes with Diwan’s car to receive her. However, she does not recognise Vijay. He reminds her that he is her husband and has come to receive her personally. Anyway, she goes with him in the car and lands in Diwan’s house. Diwan tell her that Vijay is her husband and there are photographs of their wedding ceremony which he shows to her. She insists that she has not married to him. Diwan consoles her that because of her accident in the ship, she has lost her memory. He asks Vijay to stay in a different room of his house until Rita gets back her memory to recognise him as her husband.
At the same time, Ramesh (Vinod Mehra) lands in Diwan’s house and welcomes Rita who is once again bewildered by his informal behaviour as she has seen him for the first time. Even Diwan is meeting him for the first time. He reminds Rita that both of them got married in Registrar’s Office before she departed for London. He shows the marriage registration certificate to Diwan who also asks him to stay in a different room until the Rita gets back her memory and recognises as to who is her real husband – Vijay or Ramesh. In Diwan’s house, there is a maid servant, Lalu (Asit Sen) and Maya (?), Diwan’s secretary who is closed to Rita. However, after her return from London, Rita finds her movements suspicious.
After few days, Ramesh visits Dewan’s house to provide further proof by way of a film which he shows to Diwan, Vijay and Rita in which Ramesh is seen singing a song for Rita who is sitting in a sofa when they were dating. He shows another film in which Rita is seen suggesting Ramesh that they should get married before she departs for London. After a couple of days, there is an attempt to murder Rita in her bedroom in the night. However, she gets awaked with a sound of a falling object which forces the killer to run away.
As days passes, Rita becomes more suspicious of Maya. One day, she forces her to reveal as to why she is often seen visiting a nearby house without informing anyone in the house. With a strong pressure on her, Maya decides to reveal the secrets to her at a different place. However, before she could reveal the secret, Maya is found dead by falling in her room while fixing the wall clock. Police believes that it is the case of murder by electric shock.
With an attempted murder on Rita and the murder of Maya, Ramesh thinks that the life of Rita is in danger as she could be the next target. He arranges kidnapping Rita from her house and she is brought in a house where Ramesh is already waiting for her. He reveals all the secrets concerning Diwan Dinanath. He says that his father and Dinanath were close friends of Rita’s father. Diwan wanted to grab all the properties of Rita’s father. So, he deliberately arranged pushing of a boulder on Rita’s father with life threatening injuries. During this period, Rita’s father made a Will in which he appointed Diwan and Ramesh’s father as joint custodians for his property until Rita attains the age of 18 after which the property will be transferred in her name. Soon Rita’s father dies.
Next, Diwan targets Ramesh’s father by a car accident in which he gets seriously injured. Before his death, he takes assurance from his son, Ramesh that he should take care of Rita and her properties as he has no faith in Diwan. Ramesh further reveals to Rita that Kalu in her house was his mole who used to report to him the activities in his house.
Diwan has another plan after the property is transferred to Rita on her attaining the age of 18. He has employed Vijay to act as her husband by creating fake photographs of their marriage ceremony. He has a plan to kill both Vijay and Rita to become the sole heir to the property. The news of Vijay acting as the husband of Rita is relayed to Ramesh by Lalu. So, Ramesh also creates a fake marriage certificate to claim that he is Rita’s husband. He has been keeping a tag on Rita. He also made fake films to prove his bonafide first as a lover of Rita and second getting married before her departure to London.
With all these revelations, Rita starts cooperating with Ramesh. However, Diwan is one step ahead of them. He arranges kidnapping of both of them and put pressure on Rita to sign a document transferring all her properties to Diwan. In the meanwhile, Lalu with his dog traces the location of their confinement and keeps the police informed. With the help of Lalu and the dog, Ramesh and Rita are freed. They all fight with the henchmen of Diwan who is sitting in his car and watching the drama. A police team encircle his car and arrests him. Ramesh and Rita unite, this time for real.
The film had four songs written by Kaifi Azmi (3) and Asad Bhopali (1) which have been set to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. I present the first song, a ghazal from the film, ‘tumhen wo bheegi huyee raat yaad hai ke nahee’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Mohammed Rafi on the words of Kaifi Azmi. The song is picturised on Vinod Mehra. Rehana Sultan is seen sitting on a sofa.
The context of the song is that Rita (Rehana Sultan) has lost her memories following an accident on the ship. She is not able to recognise Ramesh (Vinod Mehra) who claims to be her husband. Just to prove to her that he was her fiancé and thereafter they had a registered marriage, he plays a film in which he is seen singing a song for her. Part 2 of the song has only one stanza which is again a film played by Ramesh to recall her memory in which she had said that she wants to get married to him before she proceeds to London. Later, it turns out to be fake films and Rita has not lost the memory following her accident but Diwan (Abhi Bhattacharya) has deliberately created that impression for his selfish motives.
I like the way Mohammed Rafi has rendered ‘raat’ as well as ‘yaad hai ke nahee’ in some places to add warmth in the lover’s expression toward his beloved, expecting a response from her.
