‘Dillagi’ (1966) was produced by Tony Walker under his banner, Golden Films and was directed by S Bannerjee. The cast included Mala Sinha, Sanjay Khan, Nazima, Vijay Kumar, Johny Walker, Jagirdar, Amar, Pravin Paul, Bela Bose, Zeb Sultana, Tony Walker, Bela Bose, Ratan Gurung etc. The film’s producer, Tony Walker (real name: Kamaluddin Kazi) was Johny Walker’s brother and film’s other actor, Vijay Kumar ( real Name: Waheeduddin Kazi) was the youngest brother of Johny and Tony Walker. Probably, this was the only film in which all the three brothers acted together.
Recently, I have watched the film for the first time. The first half of the film is a romantic comedy which turns into a melodrama during the second half. With comedy sub-plots and eight songs, the film have been stretched longer than necessary. The film is a ‘time pass’ without a repeat value. The story of the film is as under:
Sapan (Sanjay Khan) comes from a wealthy family who is vagabond and behaves like a playboy. His friend, Deepak (Vijay Kumar) is keen that Sapan falls in love with a girl and settles down in his life. For this, he plays tricks like ‘accidentally’ losing his balance which pushes Seema (Mala Sinha) into swimming pool so that Deepak who is already in the swimming pool can save her from drowning. Sapan scolds Deepak that love is not created by his idiotic tricks but happens naturally.
With his failed attempt, after few days, Deepak tries another trick. He writes a love letter to Seema purported to be signed by Sapan which lands in the hands of Seema’s mother (Praveen Paul). Seema assures her that she will investigate as to how dare he can write a letter whom she regards as road romeo. One day, Seema meets Sapan in the club and confronts with him about his love letter. She insults him in front of so many club members. Before, Sapan could explain to her, she storms out of the club.
Sapan decides to punish Seema for her insulting behaviour by posing himself as if he is really in love with her. For that, he takes the help of Pyarelal (Johny Walker) who suggests him to hire some goons to threaten Seema when he can suddenly appear and rescues her from the goons. With this, she will fall in love with him for his masculine act. Sapan does what Pyarelal has suggested and Seema develps a sympethic attitude toward him. In the meanwhile, Deepak goes to Seema’s house and tell her that Sapan is badly injured while rescuing her from the goons. She , at once decide to see him. Before she meets Sapan, the secret gets out through his maid servant. Seema is furious and decides to teach a lesson to Sapan.
Seema meets the ‘injured’ Sapan and pretends to him to be in love with him. This pretensions from both sides go on for few days with the intention of rejecting the offer when proposed as the punishment. Sapan’s father (Jagirdar), presuming that Sapan is in love with Seema visits Seema’s parents who are known to him. They discuss marriage arrangements. Sapan is unaware of all these developments.
One day, while Seema and Sapan were on a stroll in a forest with the pretension of a loving couple, Sapan confesses her that he is really in love with her. Now, Seema gets the opportunity to insult Sapan. After hearing this, Seema gets angry walks away from him into deep forest with Sapan following her. She abruptly stops when she sees a cobra on her way. Turning back, she falls in the arms of Sapan. They spend the night in a cave since it would be too late to return. Thus Seema and Sapan begin their real love for each other. They get engaged.
In the meanwhile, Deepak is trying to befriend a girl (Nazima) who is always seen sitting in the shore of a lake. She refuses to divulge her name to him, although she spends time with Deepak who is bent upon wooing her with not much success so far for the reason best known to her.
After some days, Sapan’s father gets an heart-attack. On the dying moment, he shares a secret to Sapan that he has a daughter, Laajwanti who is looked after by one Puran Bahadur (Keshav Rana) to whom he regularly sends money for her education. He takes the assurance from Sapan that after his death he will take care of her as a brother without anyone knowing as to who she is to avoid tarnishing the image of the family. With his task completed, Sapan’s father breaths his last.
Sapan goes at the address of Laajwanti’s school which his father had given him. But he does not find her in the school as she was never in that school. After making a lot of efforts to locate Puran Bahadur, Sapan finds him in a red light area who is about to sell Laajwanti to a wealthy man. And Laajwanti (Nazima) happens to be none other than the girl to whom Deepak has been wooing.
Sapan brings Laajwanti to his house. But because of his assurance to the father that their relationship will not be disclosed, the very next day, he shifts Laajwanti in a different house. He visits her every day to spend time with her. People starts gossiping that Laajwanti is Sapan’s mistress. The gossip reaches to Seema’s father and ultimately to Seema. Seema’s father (Amar) breaks her engagement with Sapan. Seema does not believe in the gossip. To confirm from Sapan himself, she goes to his house where the maid servant reveals to her that nowadays, Sapan spends time with a girl in the evening who stays in a different house. She visits the house and finds Sapan with Laajwanti. Sapan is unable to explain her as he is bound by his assurance to the father to keep Laajwanti’s relation secret. Seema is devasted and returns home.
One day Deepak visits Seema’s house to enquire as to why Sapan has not been seen with her for a long time. He takes her in his car to give her a surprise to show to her his fiancé, Laajwanti. He parks the car outside to bring Laajwanti out. To his surprise, he finds Sapan in the house who is seen consoling Laajwanti. Again the same misunderstanding with Deepak happens and Sapan’s inability to explain the situation creates more suspicion about him. Because of delay in Deepak’s return, Seema also goes to see them in the house.
After witnessing two showdowns of Sapan, first with Seema and second time with Deepak, Laajwanti feels that she is responsible for destroying Sapan’s marriage with Seema as well as his friendship with Deepak. She leaves the house with handing over a folded letter to Sapan which he throws on the floor. Seema picks and reads the letter which explains all the details including which Sapan was bound by his assurance not to disclose. At the end of the letter, she states that she is going to end her life. Both Sapan and Deepak follow her and save her from committing suicide from an hillock. All is well at the end.
The film had Eight songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri which were set to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Six songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 7th song, ‘poochho to naam bhee apna bataa naheen sakte’ rendered by Mohammed Rafi and picturised on Vijay Kumar and Nazima.
The context of the song is that Nazima has been rescued by her brother, Sanjay from the redlight area before she is sold to a wealthy man. She is now happy that she can live her normal life. With this background, she visits her usual place where Vijay Kumar meets her. Now she has no inhibition about disclosing her name to him which he has been asking her on her every visit. Once again, he asks her name but this time through the medium of the song.
