Today, 20th June, 2022 is the birthday of our Respected Dear Atul ji. On this occasion we wish him a very happy birthday and a healthy, wealthy, peaceful and ‘full of musical life’ ahead. . .

Previously while selecting a song for this occasion we were specially looking for songs having ‘geet, safar, gaanaa, gaata chal, gaaye jaa, gungunaata chal, gaata chalaa gaya, etc. and words like these and/or similar words like these woven in a ‘philosophical’ song set up to convey the ‘musical journey’ of Atul ji and this blog. However today I am presenting a totally different song to celebrate this occasion with a rocking song and music, once again in a ‘Jat Yamla’ style. 😀

Also today I will not repeat again what I usually like to mention about Atul ji and my feelings for him and feelings for the blog. I would only like that today he listens to and enjoys this song presented with this post here 🙂

I would once again say ‘Many Happy Returns of the Day to Atul ji’ and move forward to today’s song and its movie.

Today’s song is from the ‘1999’ movie ‘Dillagi’. Today this movie is making its debut on the blog. This film was produced and directed by Sunny Deol for his home production company Vijayta Films. It was presented by Dharmendra.

The movie has Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Urmila Matondkar, Dara Singh, Zohra Sehgal, Harish Patel, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Reema, Vijay Kashyap, Sushmita Mukherjee, Deepshikha, Vaibhavi Raut, Rajshri Solanki, Dimple Inamdar, Goldie Choudhary, Raj Zutshi, Alistar Woodham, Pervinder Gujral, Kanika Shivpuri, Tora Khasgir, Narinder Kaur, Shefali Ganguly, Mac Singh, Raspal Virdee, Steve Nijjar, Bebz Jetha, Col. Kapoor, Jasbir Thandi, Prakash Agarwal, Nirmal, Master Anand, Master Mayank, Master Deepak, Master Arbaaz, and others. New actors introduced in this movie are Praveen Dabas, Amrik Randhawa, Apsara Iyengar, Denise Butler. The movie also has Surekha Sikri in a Guest Apprearance and Preity Zinta in a Special Appearance.

Screenplay of this movie was written by Sutanu Gupta. Dialogues of this movie were written by Sanjay Masoom. Editing of this movie was done by Keshav Naidu. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 08.11.1999.

This movie has as many as eleven songs . Lyrics for this movie are written by Javed Akhtar, Sukhwinder Singh, and Tejpal Kaur. Music for this movie is composed by Jatin-Lalit, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Sukhwinder Singh, and Anand-Milind. We will know more about this movie in the future when the other songs of this movie are discussed on the blog.

Lyricist for the today’s song is Sukhwinder Singh who has also composed this song. The singing voices are Mahendra Kapoor, Shankar Mahadevan, Sukhwinder Singh, Mridula Desai, Mohini Brahmabhatt and chorus. It is picturised on Sunny Deol, Dara Singh, Bobby Deol, Zohra Sehgal and many other artists are also present there during the picturisation of this song.

Let us now listen to the today’s song and welcome this musical movie on the blog.

Once again wishing our Atul ji a very happy birthday today !!!

Today’s song is from the film Dillagi-1942.

The title of the film seemed to attract the filmmakers and starting with Dillagi-1942, few more similarly titled films were made like, Dillagi-49, Dillagi-66, Dillagi-78 and Dillagi-99. Of these films, Dillagi-49 became quite successful and a film to remember because of the famous song ” Tu mera chand main teri chandni” sung by Suraiya and Shyam Kumar.

This also happened to be the first well known case of ” Same Name Confusions”, because singer Shyam Kumar had sung this song for actor Shyam and to complicate the issue, both were acting in that film. For the next 70 years, old film music lovers went on discussing vehemently whether the actor Shyam was the singer. Many authors, Internet sites and few books too credited the song to actor Shyam. Poor Shyam Kumar the singer !

Finally many film historians, genuine workers and writers dug up information details about singer Shyam Kumar and it was proved that the singer was Shyam Kumar and NOT actor Shyam. I have also discussed this case in my book published in 2018. I feel very sad that despite all this commotion about the confusion and the final clarification, many young lovers of old songs still assert and credit the song to actor Shyam !

Inspite of trying very hard, I could not get any information about this film, its story etc. However, in one of the 1942 issues of Film India Magazine, in one article, the Editor- Baburao Patel had said ” Recently I saw a picture- Dillagi. It was supposed to be a comedy, but the situations were far from being comic to evoke a laugh. Throughout the picture, I did not laugh even once, but at the end when the lights were on, I looked at Pt. Indra, writer of that comedy film ( he had invited us to see this film) and the tragedy of frustration reflected in his face excited real laughter. But then every Cinegoer can’t be lucky to have the writer sitting next to him ! ”

Film Dillagi-42 was made by Pragati Chitra, Bombay and was directed by Balwant Bhatt. The elder brother of Nanabhai Bhatt- Balwant Bhatt was born at Porbandar,Gujarat on 13-1-1909. Balwant started his career by assisting Naval Gandhi in 1930-31 and Pesi Karani at Imperial Film company and then N.B.Vakil at Sagar Studios in 1932.

A prolific director of second tier, action oriented films, Bhatt’s first film as a director was Royal Film Company’s 1932 silent thriller PASSING SHOW which featured popular stunt-film actor Navinchandra. He turned Director with the advent of Talkie films and joined Prakash Pictures with BAMBAI KI MOHINI [1934; aka: ACTRESS] starring Miss Panna and Miss Alaknanda. His last one was Nagin aur Sapera-1966. He directed 33 films, mostly stunt and C grade films.

Bhatt directed action star Fearless Nadia in DELHI EXPRESS (1949) and CIRCUSWALE (1950) as well as the comedian Bhagwan in JOKER (1949) and JODIDAR (1950), and even had opportunities to work with bigger name’s such as Bibbo in SUHAAG (1940), Maya Banerjee in MADHU SUDAN (1941), and Prithviraj Kapoor in AANKH KI SHARAM (1943). But the vast majority of Bhatt’s output were in the category of B-grade films.

He directed some Gujarati films like Sansar Leela, Seth Sagsha, Divadandi, Snehlata etc. He was the producer of Dillagi-1942, Gunehgar-53, Alif Laila-53, Sinbad the sailor-52, Son of Sinbad-58, Police Detective-60 etc. etc. Diwadandi-1950 became famous for its song-“Tari aankhni afini”, sung by Dilip Dholakia with music by Ajit Merchant. His film Mordhwaj-52 was the Debut film for MD Narayan Dutt. Balwant Bhatt died on 7-2-1965,at Bombay.

The cast of the film Dillagi-42 was Kumar, Hansa Wadkar, Anuradha, Gulab, Agha and Sushil Kumar.

The Music Director of Dillagi-42 was Pratap Mukherjee. I do not have any information about him except that he directed only 3 films, namely Dillagi-42, Tamasha-42 and Kisise na kehna-42 . Actress gulab was from kashmir. She can be called the first girl from Kashmir to work in Hindi films. Her real name was Saraswati Devi. She was born on 10-6-1908 at Jammu. She joined Krishna Film Company in 1924. Her first silent film ‘Krishna Kumar’ came in 1925. She worked in 60 silent films. Her last silent film was ‘Dagabaz Dushman’-32, made by East India Film co.Bombay.

Her first Talkie film was Suryakumari-33, made by Vishnu Cinetone. It was directed by Dhirubhai Desai. She sang one song ‘more preetam jab ghar aaye’ composed bu Kikubhai Yagnik. Then came Baburao Patel’s ‘Bala Joban’-34, Sewa Sadan-34 and Nai Duniya-34 ( Debut film of Rajkumari and Jayant). In this film Gulab sang 2 songs.

Gulab was very beautiful and quite popular in the film industry. Some of her films were Bambai ki sethani-35, Challenge-37, Bharosa-40, Pyas-41, Ek Raat-42, Station master-42, Gaali-44, Rattan-44, Mann ki jeet-44, Mirza Sahibaan-47, Lahore-49, Badi Behan-49, stage-51, Post Box 999-58, Chhabili-60 etc etc. She acted in 160 films. Her last film seems to be Haqeeqat-64. She also sang 22 songs in 11 films.

Today’s song is sung by Rafiq Ghaznavi and Anuradha. They were husband and wife. Actually Rafiq was not a known playback singer. I wonder how he came to sing a song in this film even though he was not working in it. May be due to the recommendation of his wife Anuradha, he got this song. Anuradha’s real name was Khurshid Akhtar and pet name was Sheedan. She was the younger sister of actress Zohra Jaan, who was Rafiq’s wife before her. Later, Rafiq left Anuradha also and married someone else.

Anyway, the song is nothing to write home about, because the singers were not professional singers. With this song film Dillagi-1942 makes its Debut on the Blog.

Song-Jab saamne tum aate ho (Dillagi)(1942) Singers-Rafiq Ghaznavi, Anuradha, Lyrics-Unknown, MD-Pratap Mukherjee

Lyrics

Jab saamne tum aate ho
Jab saamne tum aate ho
nainon se man mein samaate ho

jab saamne tum aate ho

tumko dekha nain hanse ye
kya jaadoo kar jaate ho
tumko dekha nain hanse ye
kya jaadoo kar jaate ho
Jab saamne tum aate ho
Jab saamne tum aate ho

nainon se man mein samaate ho
nainon se man mein samaate ho
jab saamne tum aate ho
jab saamne tum aate ho

main kahna chaahoon kah na sakoon
main kahna chaahoon kah na sakoon
aur bina kahe main rah na sakoon
aur bina kahe main rah na sakoon
man ki meethhi meethhi baaten
man ki meethhi meethhi baaten

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020)–Song No.101
———————————————————————————–

This date ten years ago (viz 19 december 2010) saw seven songs getting covered from seven movies. First song of the day was covered at 9:19 AM and the final song at 1:01 PM. So unlike other days, when all songs would get covered before 10 AM, this day I struggled to publish the songs of the day.

Here are the details of the seven songs covered that day:-

Blog post number Song Movie (year) Remarks
3374 Tum kyaa jaano more maathe ki bindiyaa ka mol Kaneez(1949) Movie YIPPEED by now
3375 Muhabbat par bahaar aati jahaan gulzaar ho jaataa Shair (1949) Movie YIPPED by now
3376 Duniyaa waalon badaa hai mushqil apne dil ko todnaa Chhoti Bhaabhi(1950) Seven songs covered out of nine
3377 Dil le gaya ji koi dil le gayaa Sanam(1951) Movie YIPPEED by now
3378 Mere chaand mere laal re Deewaana(1952) Movie YIPPEED by now
3379 Aji o suno to 12 O’clock(1958) Movie YIPPEED by now
3380 Ham jee lenge bin tumhaare…tum meri zindagi ho Dillagi (1966) 4 songs covered out of 7

One can see that five out of seven movies whose songs were discussed ten years ago have since been YIPPEED.

“Dillagi”(1966) is one of the unYIPPEED movies and so it is one of the two movies eligible for blog ten year challenge today.

“Dillagi”(1966) was produced by Tony Walker and directed by S Bannerjee for Golden Films, Bombay. The movie had Mala Sinha, Sanjay Khan, Bela Bose, Johny Walker, Nazima, Vijay Kumar, Gajanan Jagirdar, Amar, Keshav, Khurshid, Hammad, Tuntun, Moolchand, Pravin Paul, Tony Walker, Bela Bose, Zeb Sultana, Shabana, Roop Kumari, Ravi Kant, Ratan Gaurang, Tulsi, Aziz, Maqsood, Manjeet, Abdul Jabbar, Suresh, N.Misra, Samarlal Damani, Ajay Kumar, Abdul Kader, Baxi, Shrfu, Edwina etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it and four of these songs have been covered so far.

Here is the fifth song from “Dillagi”(1966) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Usha Mangeshkar. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Musc is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The fun teasing song is picturised as a party song on Mala Sinha, Sanjay Khan, Tony Walker or Vijay Kumar, Chinoo Shikari, Edwina etc.

I heard this fun song during my early childhood and I loved the lyrics, especially the words kabootar kabootar thrown in the lyrics for no apparent reasons other than to make it a fun song.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

“Dillagi”(1978) was Produced by Kanwar Ajit Singh andBikram Singh Dehal and directed by Basu Chatterjee for BikramJeet Films International, Bombay. This movie had Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Mithu Mukherjee, Devan Verma, Asrani, Urmeela Bhatt, Ritu Kamal, Preeti Ganguly, Kajri, Anjali Paigankar, Manjita,Poornima Jairam, Dulari, Lalita Kumari, Rajan Kapoor,Shobhana Shah,Geetanjali,Manik Chowdhury,Guffi Paintal, Qamar Khan, Bina Bawa etc in it with Friendly appearance by Keshto Mukherjee and Brahmachari and unfriendly Special appearance by Shatrughan Sinha. 🙂

It was described as a “social” movie but it was a romantic comedy bordering on soft erotica. That is what I felt about this movie when I watched it in 1978 (duly bunking my college 🙂 ).

I was perhaps a bit too young and immature for a movie with this story line at that time. With the benefit of hindsight, now I feel that it is a nice movie to be watched with one’s lover/ spouse, rather than a movie to be watched with one’s siblings/ parents etc.

The movie had four songs in it. Three of these songs have been covered in the past. Here are the details of these songs :-

Song Title

Main kaun sa geet sunaaun 8137 27-may-13
Kar gayee mast mujhe phaagun ki hawaa 9584 17-Mar-14
Baadal to aaye lahra ke chhaaye 14234 4-Apr-18

With time, the movie, and moreso its songs have ended up becoming obscure.

The fourth and final song, the song under discussion is perhaps the most obscure out of the four songs of the movie. This song is sung by Lata and Nitin Mukesh. Yogesh is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

The song is picturised as a romantic stage performance song on Hema Malini and Dharmendra dressed like Shakuntala and Dushyanta, immortalised by Kalidas in his Sanskrit epic “Abhigyan Shakuntala”. Lyrics by Yogesh are in pure Sanskritised Hindi, as befitting the genre, and they sound quite appropriate for the picturisation.

Mithu Mukherjee, Preeti Ganguly, Poornima Jairam etc are also visible in the picturisation as backstage support persons. 🙂

Lyrics of this song as well as other details were provided by Prakashchandra, who informed me that the audio version of the song is longer than the video version.

With this song, “Dillagi”(1978) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Song-Baadal to aaye lahra ke chhaaye (Dillagi)(1978) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Yogesh, MD-Rajesh Roshan

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

baadal to aaye lahra ke chhaaye
o aane waale par tum to na aaye
baadal to aaye lahra ke chhaaye
o aane waale par tum to na aaye

tum zindagi mein kyun meri aakar
gum ho gaye ho aise mujh ko bhulaa kar
main pyaar tera dil mein sajaa kar
baithhi hoon kab se aas laga kar
dukh mere dil se honthon pe aaye
o aane waale par tum to na aaye

aawaaz meri aa jaao sun ke
todo na sapne haaye mere nayan ke
is baar tumse kisi bhi jatan se
main raaz apne saare kah doongi man ke
