In this post I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Karmayogi-1978’. This is the third song from this movie to be posted here on this blog. This song is a club-dance song performed by actress Rekha on screen.

‘Karmayogi-1978’ was directed by Ram Maheshwari for ‘A.R. Productions, Bombay’. It was produced by Anil Suri and it was passed by Censor Board on 23.10.1978. The cast of this movie has Mala Sinha, Rajkumar, Jeetendra, Rekha, Reena Roy, Ajit, Nazeer Hussain, Jagirdar, Yogita Bali, Sudhir Dalvi, Dheeraj, Kanhaiyalal, Jagdeep, Dhoomal, Mushtaq Merchant, Omkar Ema, Chandrashekhar, Jagdish Raj, Master Abbas, Master Parvez, Master Rajiv, Master Sonu and others. Screenplay of ‘Karmayogi-1978’ was written by Benoy Chatterjee and C.J. Pavri. Dialogues for this movie were written by Sagar Sarhadi. Ela Maheshwary was the additional dialogue writer for this movie. Editing of this movie was done by M.S. Shinde. This movie has six songs written by Verma Malik and composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

‘Karmayogi-1978’ is ranked between – 15 to 25 – by some sources among the ‘top Hindi movies’ of 1978. I had not watched this movie during its initial release in 1978. However I have vague recolections of this movie being discussed by our seniors in our cricket playing group.

Later I got an opportunity to watch this movie with my colleagues on VCR during my stay at Kota (Rajasthan) in 1990-1991. Ever since, I have carried the memory of this song with me. When I got associated with this blog, I presented the first song from this movie on 07.01.2021 on the occasion of the birthday of Reena Roy. The song was ‘ik baat kahoon main sajnaa’ which was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. In that post I had mentioned that:

None of the songs from this movie made it to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala-1978’ or 1979. However, today’s song made it to the ‘shadow list’ of songs or ‘songs of the next rung’ of the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of 1979.

I had watched this movie on VCR during my stay at Kota circa 1990-1991. Though I have now forgotten the story of the movie, but I always remember a song from this movie. That song is another song sung by Asha Bhonsle and picturised on Rekha.

Then I presented the second song from this movie on the blog on 01.01.2023 which was ‘tere jeewan kaa hai karmon se naataa’ sung by Manna Dey.

During the preparaation of the post for the above song, I watched this movie again. I liked the performance of Raj Kumar in this movie. I personally feel that this movie was one of Raj Kumar’s landmark movies.

Actor Raj Kumar plays a father (Shankar) and his son (Mohan) in this movie. He has played both the roles with aplomb, full with his characteristic style and dialogue delivery .

Rajkumar (Shankar the father) after being betrayed by people and after losing his wealth takes on the path of crime in order to gain instant results in the form of money and power. Mala Sinha plays the wife of Shankar who is a religious lady believing in the teachings of Geeta and is a firm believer in ‘karma’.

Jeetendra plays Ajay the younger brother of Mohan who is brought up by Mala Sinha as an idealist who takes the morally righteous path and does good deeds. Ajit is the partner of Shankar in the world of crime, but ditches him which leads to Shankar being caught by the police and given death sentence by the court. Before leaving this world Shankar shares the bitter memories of his past life with Mohan and asks Mohan to take revenge against those who wronged him. Reena Roy plays Ajay’s love interest while Rekha is her elder sister who sacrifices her life for the well-being of her younger sister and becomes a club dancer.

That leads us to the situation for the song under discussion, where Rekha is performing in the club. As this is a movie about the crime world, we find casinos, dance clubs etc that were considered part of crime world those days

Raj Kumar and many others are present in the picturisation, while Rekha gives her dance performance.

Lyrics are by Verma Malik and music is composed by Kalyanji-Anandji which revives memories of the musically rich days of seventies. 🙂

Enjoy!!!
