# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (1st May -Birth Anniversary-Manna Dey)
——————————————-——————————
Today 1st May’2023 is the one hundred and fourth birth anniversary of legendary Singer Manna Dey (01.05.1919-24.10.2013).
As per our blog statistics Manna Da has sung around thirteen hundred and fifty songs for Hindi movies.
We still have a long way to go to bring all the songs sung by him here on the blog.
Manna Da has sung a variety of songs from all ‘genres’ in Hindi movies but majority of his songs are classical based, Qawwalis, philosophical, inspirational, and motivational songs other than romantic songs.
Manna Dey’s songs of various moods are perfect songs to listen to for a music lover no matter what mood he find himself in.
I personally like his classical based, philosophical, inspirational, motivational genre of songs and the ‘Qawwalis’ sung by him.
Recently I had presented some of this songd which are ‘background’ songs in Hindi movies. Majority of them are philosophical songs as well.
Today I present another background song sung by Manna Dey. It is from the ‘1978’ movie ‘Karmyogi’.
‘Karmayogi-1978’ was directed by Ram Maheshwari for ‘A.R. Productions, Bombay’. It was produced by Anil Suri.
It had Mala Sinha, Rajkumar, Jeetendra, Rekha, Reena Roy, Ajit, Nazeer Hussain, Jagirdar, Yogita Bali, Sudhir Dalvi, Dheeraj, Kanhaiyalal, Jagdeep, Dhoomal, Mushtaq Merchant, Omkar Ema, Chandrashekhar, Jagdish Raj, Master Abbas, Master Parvez, Master Rajiv, Master Sonu and others.
Screenplay of ‘Karmayogi-1978’ was written by Benoy Chatterjee and C.J. Pavri.
Dialogues for this movie were written by Sagar Sarhadi. Ela Maheshwary was the additional dialogue writer for this movie.
Editing of this movie was done by M.S. Shinde.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 23.10.1978.
This movie had six songs, including one multiple version song. Lyrics for all songs were written by Verma Malik and music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.
Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey were the playback singers for this movie.
In my earlier post while presenting the first song from this movie on the blog I had mentioned that I had watched this movie on VCR during my stay at Kota and i.e., may be in 1990-1991 and have forgotten the movie by now.
However, for the preparation of this post I watched this movie online (though in parts) and liked it very much.
I personally feel that this movie was one of the top movies of Raj Kumar if not a ‘milestone’ movie.
He plays a father (Shankar) and his son (Mohan) in this movie and he has done justice to both the roles with his characteristic style and dialogue delivery where he plays a ‘bitter’ human being who after being betrayed by people and having lost his wealth takes to the path of ‘crime’ for ‘instant results’ to earn ‘money’ and ‘power’.
Mala Sinha plays the wife of Shankar who is a religious lady believing in the teachings of ‘geeta’ and believing in ‘good deeds will yield good results’ or ‘karma’.
Jeetendra plays Ajay the younger brother of Mohan who walks on the path of ‘good deeds’ and is groomed by his mother as a true ‘idealist’.
Ajit is the partner of Shankar in the world of crime, but ditches him which leads to Shankar being caught by the police and is given ‘death sentence’ in the court.
Before leaving this world Shankar shares with Mohan his bitter experiences of this world and asks Mohan to take revenge from the conspirators.
Reena Roy plays Ajay’s love interest while Rekha is her elder sister who sacrifices her life for the well-being of her younger sister and plays a ‘club dancer’.
That is the ‘brief gist’ of this movie but the real thrill is watching this movie and watch the ‘fight of the principles’ through the powerful dialogues on the screen.
For the preparation of this post I watched parts of this movie which is available online.
Let us come to the song under discussion now. As mentioned above it is a background song appearing in parts on the screen.
The first part of the song is played while the titles of the movie are rolling on the screen.
This first part is again repeated as it is when Shankar leaves his wife Durga (while she is still pregnant and expecting the second child) taking Mohan with him.
The third part of this song is played when Durga has to leave the house as the house owner Kanhaiyalal seeks repayment of the loan taken by Shankar, but eyeing on her instead.
Fourth part of this song is played where we can see Mohan is growing up while his father Shankar also making progresses in his world of crime and earning a lot and living lavishly.
The next part the fifth part of this song happens when Shankar already announced a death sentence is preparing for the ‘gallows’ without having any regrets for his deeds and the path he has chosen in his life.
The last part of the song happens when Durga learns about the hanging of Shankar through a newspaper which Ajay has brought with a shawl for her.
This song is wonderful to listen to as is usually the case with Most songs sung by Manna Da.
‘Karmayogi-1978’ is ranked between – 15 to 25 – by some sources among the ‘top Hindi movies’ of ‘1978’.
Let us now listen to this song. HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) mentions this song as a ‘two part’ song only.
Video of all parts of this song is available in one single link. The audio link does not contain the part no.3, 5 & 6 in the song.
(The part numbers mentioned in the lyrics are based on the link of the movie available online).
I think this song serves as a perfect tribute to Manna Da on his birthday today. He did his ‘karma’ with devotion and left behind an invaluable treasure of innumerable unforgettable songs for us to savour.
