Kamsune/Unsune songs of Asha Bhosle – 68

Yet another rarely heard song of Asha Bhosle – “Kya Gazab Karte Ho Ji “ from “Love Story” (1981). It was written by Anand Bakshi and composed by R D Burman.

“Love Story” was jointly directed by Rahul Rawail and Rajendra Kumar, with Rajendra Kumar producing the film, under the banner “Dimple” films. The movie starred Kumar Gaurav, Vijayeta Pandit, Rajendra Kumar, Vidya Sinha, Danny Denzongpa, Amjad Khan, Jagdish Raj, T.P. Jain, Kamaldeep, Azad, Jezebel, Gufi Paintal, Farooque Shorty, Subhash, Amarjeet Sunder, Hangama, Shakeel, Laxman Thumre, Aruna Irani, Prem Kalra, Dev Kumar, Ram Mohan, Bharat Kapoor, Ram Sethi, Bina. The music is by R. D. Burman and lyrics by Anand Bakshi.

Three songs out of six from this album are already covered in the blog – two by Peevsie’s mom Ji and one by Nahm Ji. Amongst them they have covered the credits and the story plus the special tidbits of this movie which was a super hit of those times.

“Love Story” was one of the top-grossing Hindi films of 1980s.

It marked the spectacular debut of Kumar Gaurav, who became an overnight teenage idol across India. The film ran for extended weeks in major cities, with packed theatres and repeat audiences, especially among the youth.

The music composed by R. D. Burman (with lyrics by Anand Bakshi) was a phenomenon.

Major hits included:

Yaad Aa Rahi Hai
Kaisa Tera Pyar Kaisa Ghussa
Dekho Maine Dekha Hai Ek Sapna, etc

The soundtrack became one of the highest-selling albums of the early 80s. It was a defining example of R.D. Burman’s melodic youthful style. And also a key reason behind the film’s massive popularity. Young audiences especially felt connected with the songs, which were played widely on radio and record players.

Critics found the story simple and predictable, but almost everyone praised the freshness of the lead pair, R.D. Burman’s melodic score, the film’s youthful energy and emotional appeal and the chemistry between Kumar Gaurav and Vijeta Pandit.

Kumar Gaurav became a youth icon, with popularity comparable to the biggest stars of the time.

His charm, looks, and the emotional storyline won him a massive teenage following.

It helped solidify Rahul Rawail’s career as a successful director. The movie set off a wave of youth-centric romantic musicals in the early 80s.

My reasons why “Love Story” was so successful?

Fresh faces & strong star-launch effect.
Outstanding soundtrack that became a chartbuster
Youth appeal — romance, conflict, and melodrama
High emotional quotient and family-friendly story
Aggressive promotion by producer Rajendra Kumar, already a major star and industry figure

Coming to today’s song it is lip synced by Aruna Irani, who’s seducing young Kumar Gaurav, while being oblivious to the presence of Vijayeta Pandit. All three are seen on the screen.

Nice post Satyajit jee. This was waiting to be here and should have been covered earlier. I was under the impression that this was already covered, but recently had noted that this and other ‘important’ 🙂 song from this movie was still pending to be posted.

Thanks for this one from Pancham.

Regards,

Avinash
