The theme of a married woman who chooses her domestic responsibilities by giving up her flourishing singing career has been covered in some Hindi movies. The woman’s resultant emotional toll from her loneliness and the internal conflict between as a housewife and her unfulfilled aspirations was first explored in the film, ‘Anuradha’ (1960) as far as I know. In this film, Leela Naidu gives up her singing career to marry an idealistic doctor, Balraj Sahni who is completely engrossed in his work to serve the poor villagers. A somewhat similar situation is depicted in ‘Guide’ (1965) when Waheeda Rahman is forced to give up the dancing career by her husband, archaeologist, Kishore Sahu who is more passionate about his archaeological discoveries than about his wife. In Both these films, suppression of passion makes wife’s life miserable though the end result in both these films are different.
‘Abhinetri’ (1970) has a similar theme in which Hema Malini gives up her successful career as a dancer after her marriage with Shashi Kapoor. A scientist who gets completely engrossed with his research work in his laboratory. The film was produced and directed by Subodh Mukerji under the banner of Subodh Mukerji Productions. The cast included Shashi Kapoor and Hema Malini in the lead roles supported by Deb Mukerji, Nirupa Roy, Nazir Hussain, Asit Sen, Nazima, Badri Prasad, Bela Bose etc.
The gist of the story of the film is as under:
The film starts with a stage dance performance by Anjana (Hema Malini). After the end of her performance, her Guru (Badri Prasad) informs her that one film producer has approached with a offer of Rupees one lakh to cast her in his next film but he has declined the offer. Anjana agrees with Guru’s decision as she does not work solely for money but mainly for preservation of the art form. As she reaches home, it starts raining heavily.
Shekhar (Shashi Kapoor), a research scientist, after working in the night is on his way back home but the heavy rains force him to take a shelter in the compound of Anjana’s house where she is also held-up outside her house. Her main door has got locked when she had come out to enjoy the rains. After some light banters between them, Shekhar forces open the main door but gets some minor injuries. Again after some light banter from Anjana, he storms out of her house forgetting his coat in her house.
Next day, based on a visiting card in his coat, Anjana visits Shekhar in his laboratory to return his coat. His boss (Nazir Hussain) asks Shekhar to drop Anjana at her house where they talk about each other’s background. Anjana has lost her mother in her childhood while Shekhar’s widowed mother (Nirupa Roy) stays in the village. He occasional visits the village to meet her. In his next visit, he takes Anjana with him as she has shown her desire to meet his mother to get the feel of spending time with a mother. After spending a couple of days in the village, both Anjana and Shekhar’s mother like each other.
Back to their respective houses, there is frequent meetings between Shekhar and Anjana and they start liking each other. But Shekhar is too shy to express his feelings for Anjana. In their next visit to the village, Shekhar’s mother herself brings the topic of his marriage with Anjana. Both show their consent and their marriage take place in the village itself.
The first year of their marriage goes fine with both enjoying the company of each other. But in the process, Shekhar devotes less time in his laboratory than the earlier. As a result, his boss is not happy with his output. Shekhar starts devoting more time in the laboratory than in his house as he used to do before his marriage. As a result, he spends very little time with Anjana. She has not taken up any new dance programme after her marriage. With Shekhar spending more time in his laboratory and even after returning home, he is busy with his lab work, Anjana major time is spent in the loneliness.
At this stage, one day, her Guru meets Anjana in her house and requests her to dance to his intricate choreography on which he did not find any other suitable dancer within his troupe. At first, she shows her hesitation on the plea that she has not danced for over one year. But at the same time, with loneliness looming large on her, she agrees to perform the dance for her Guru provided Shekhar gives her permission.
When Anjana brings the request of her Guru for her dance recital, Shekhar tells her that he does not like her dancing in public. However, he reluctantly gives her permission for the sake of her Guru. Shekhar attends Anjana’s dance performance which has many layers with different timelines. At the end of the dance programme, Shekhar hears some cryptic comments about Anjana from some of the audience because of which he gets very upset. He, at once goes to Anjana’s green room and confronts with her. In the process, heated arguments take place between them. At last, Shekhar gives her the option either to leave dancing career or leave him. With anger in Anjana which has built up due to her loneliness, at the spur of the moment, she decides to separate from Shekhar and starts living in her own house.
Ratna (Nazima), Anjana’s friend tries her best to bring a rapproachement between Anjana and Shekhar but of no unveil. In the meanwhile, Shekhar receives a letter from his mother that she is visiting him for staying with him for few days since she has not seen him and Anjana for a long time. Shekhar is now in a piquant situation. If she comes to know that Anjana does not live with him, it will mentally affect her. With great reluctance, Shekhar meets Anjana with a request that until his mother is staying in his house, she stays with him, acting as a happy husband and wife. Since Anjana treats Shekhar’s mother as her own, she also reluctantly agrees.
The acting goes very well between Shekhar and Anjana as husband and wife. On the day of mother’s departure, Anjana, with moist eyes, requests her not to leave the house as she will have to leave the house as well. She reveals the truth and says that she will be left alone without her. Shekhar’s mother is surprised as the same thing was told to her by Shekhar also. The fact was that Ratna has written a letter to Shekhar’s mother about their separation and had requested her to visit at once to bring out a reconciliation. For the last few days, she has come to the conclusion that neither Shekhar nor Anjana can live without each other. Although, they were acting as happy husband and wife, the mother, with her super acting, has facilated in reconciling them.
The film ends with both Anjana and Shekhar back in latter’s house with their usual light banters.
The film had seven songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri which were set to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Three songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 4th song, ‘dhadkan har dil kee’ rendered by Lata Mangeshkar and picturised on Bela Bose.
The context to the song is that Shekhar (Shashi Kapoor) and Anjana (Hema Malini) have separated after Shekhar objected to her resumption of dancing career. He spends most of his time in the laboratory neglecting his health. His boss (Nazir Hussain) forces him to leave the laboratory and take rest. On the way, he goes to his usual restaurant for his dinner where he meets Anjana’s friend, Ratna (Nazima). She brings him to the table where Anjana is already sitting. Actually, it is a trick played by Ratna to bring them together for a rapproachement without their knowledge. After some hesitation, Shekhar sits at the same table when the dance by Bela Bose starts. After the dance, Shekhar leaves without any conversation with Anjana who also does not take any initiative to talk to him.
