#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
————————————————————————
In this post we pay our tributes to actor Dharmendra who passed away yesterday on 24th November 2025 at the age of 89 years.
Everybody has to leave this mortal world. Dharmendra was ailing for last several days so everybody feared the inevitable. He has left this mortal world but memories of his films and the songs from his films will remain with the film goers who watched his films. Moreover his fans also admire him as a nice human being that he came across as in many of his interviews and public appearances.
I had once shared a post on the birth anniversary of Dharmendra wherein I had shared my memories of watching his movies. I had also mentioned then that …maa kasam 🙂 , he will be there in our fond memories of the movies from almost every decade ever since he began his career in the Hindi movies with ‘Dil Bhi Tera Ham Bhi Tere-1960’ till the very recently released movie ‘Yamla Pagla Deewaana-Phir Se-2018’ … (that was till that post of mine in 2018).
With permission of our editors and hoping that readers will not mind if I repaet the contents of that old post again. Because that will give readers an idea how I enjoyed watching the movies of Dharmendra and his presence on the big screen from my younger days.
My oldest memories of watching movies of Dharmendra are with my uncles where I watched movies like ‘Shikaar-1966’, ‘Yakeen-1969’, ‘Kab? Kyun? Aur Kahaan? -1970’, ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh-1971’, ‘Resham Ki Dori-1974’, ‘Raja Jaani-1973’…
Then I remember some of his movies which I must have watched with my parents like ‘Yaadon Ki Baarat-1973’, ‘Dost-1974’, ‘Sholay-1975’, ‘Maa-1976’, ‘Charas-1976’, ‘Dream Girl-1977’, ‘The Burning Train-1980’…Then I remember to have watched ‘Devar-1966’, during the Ganpati Festivals on the small 16mm screen in open grounds in the seventies.
The movies I watched with my brothers and cousins during the summer vacations included movies like ‘Dharam-Veer-1977’, ‘Chacha Bhatija-1977’, ‘Ram Balram-1980’, ‘Teesri Aaankh-1982’, and ‘Samrat-1982’, ‘Main Intaqaam Loonga-1982’.
I had watched his movies like ‘Aap Ki Parchhaayiyaan-1964’, ‘Main Bhi Ladki Hoon-1964’,‘Izzat-1968’, ‘Mere Hamdam Mere Dost-1968’,‘Khamoshi-1969’, ’Sharaafat-1970’, ‘Samadhi-1972’, ‘Jheel Ke Us Paar-1973, ‘Chaitaali-1975’,‘Chupke-Chupke-1975’, ‘Ek Mahal Ho Sapnon Ka-1975’, ‘Kinaara-1977’, ‘Blackmail-1978’, ‘Dillagi-1978’ during the weekly screening of movies in the recreation club building in our colony where we were staying at that time.
When I was a grown-up boy 🙂 there was a phase in my life when I was in 11 -12th standard at Akola(Maharashtra). I was less involved in studies and more on cricket and movies 😊. I watched many Dharmendra movies during this period. The movies that I watched during that phase of my life included older movies such as ‘Haqeeqat-1964’, ‘Pyaar Hi Pyaar-1968’, ‘Jugnu-1973’, ‘Patthar Aur Paayal-1974’, ‘Pratigya-1975’. In addition, I also watched movies released during those years (1983-1985) i.e. ‘Naukar Biwi Ka-1983’, ‘Qayamat-1983’, ‘Jeene Nahin Doonga-1984’, ‘Baazi-1984’, ‘Dharam Aur Kanoon-1984’, Jagir-1984’, ‘Jhoothha-Sach-1984’, ‘Raj Tilak-1984’…
I also got to watch movies like ‘Bandini-1963’, ‘Neela Aakaash-1965’, and ‘Satyakaam-1969’, ‘Phagun-1973’, on television (‘doordarshan’) during this same period.
Having watched all the above mentioned movies while based at Akola District of Maharashtra (CP & Berar circuit for the movies), we shifted to Parli Vaijnath – Marathwada region of Maharashtra (it falls in the Nizam Circuit for movies). Here I had already taken up a job in a construction company. During this period till 1988 I watched many old and new movies. I remember I watched Dharmendra’s ‘Aaayi Milan Ki Bela-1964’, ‘Kaajal-1965’, ‘Aaye Din Bahaar Ke-1966’, ‘Anupama-1966’, ‘Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya-1966’, ‘Phool Aur Patthar-1966’,’Aankhen-1968’, ‘Aaya Saawan Jhoomke-1969’, ‘Rakhwaala-1971’, ‘Loafer-1973’, ‘Keemat-1973’, ‘Baghawat-1982’, ‘Hukumat-1987’, ‘Aag Hi Aag-1987’…
I shifted to Kota (Rajasthan) in Nov’1988 for my professional career. Watching movies was my main source of entertainment there. There I got to watch many old Hindi movies as well as the new ones. I watched Dharmendra’s ‘Batwaara-1989’, ‘Naakabandi-1990’, ‘Farishtey-1991’. It was there that I got to watch the old Dharmendra classic ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh-1971’ in theater. I watch this movie repeatedly on consecutive days and enjoyed it a lot. From Kota traveling around places like Nimach I watched ‘Tehalka-1992’. I watched his ‘Man Ki Aankhen-1970’, on video cassettes on ‘VCR’ we use to hire to watch movies then during our weekly get-together or holiday. Later I bought VCDs of his ‘Ganga Ki Lehren’, ‘Dulhan Ek Raat Ki’ (which had one my favorite song ‘ek haseen shaam ko …’).
And there are other movies like ‘Aadmi Aur Insaan’, ‘Bahaarein Phir Bhi Aayengi’, ‘Chunaoti’, ‘Do Chor’, ‘Ishq Par Zor Nahin’,’Jeevan Mrityu’, ‘Jwaar Bhaata’, ‘Kahaani Kismat Ki’, ‘Mohabbat Zindagi Hai’, ‘Naya Zamaana’, ‘Razia Sultan’, ‘Tum Haseen Main Jawaan’, which I don’t remember correctly but I think I watched them either in theatres or on TV.
The last movie of Dharmendra that I have seen is ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani-2023’, which I watched on an OTT platform.
Watching his movies has always been a different experience and entertaining and enjoyable too. I and many others like me will always be thankful to him for the enormous joy that he brought to us by his onscreen presence. His fight scenes with Shetty are always a favorite of mine. Movies of Dharmendra where Shetty was listed as a co star are movies that I look forward to. Among his latest movies I enjoyed ‘Hukumat’, ‘Tehalka’, ‘Naakabandi’ etc a lot. Not just action, I was even moved by the emotional ‘mother and son’ scenes involving Dharmendra.
Then there were songs from his black and white movies and many other musicals of the ‘seventies that I cannot forget. Many songs featuring Dharmendra brings back fond memories for me. I have watched many of his movies more than once. I cannot forget his emotional speech in the Filmfare awards function when he was felicitated with the Filmfare lifetime achievement award.
Today I am sharing a song from his movie ‘Main Inteqaam Loongaa-1982’. This movie was released during the summer of 1982’ (passed by Censor Board on 11.05.1982), when I had already cleared my standard 9th standard and and stepped into the most important year of my life i.e. standard 10th (1982-1983).
This movie and especially this song is always at the back of my mind.
In this song Dharmendra is shown strengthening his body with strenuous back breaking physical workouts at gym, on roads, rail tracks and other outdoor places preparing himself for the final boxing match (I am forgetting, but hope I am correct) in the movie. This song happens takes place during the the climax of the movie if I am not wrong.
This image of Dharmendra that a movie watcher has is what is depicted in the picturisation of this song. A dashing he-man with a golden heart, smiling and doing hard workouts, preparing for the hard task ahead.
The movie ‘Main Inteqaam Loongaa-1982’ was directed by T. Ramarao for ‘Prasad Art Pictures, Madras’. It was produced by A.V. Subba Rao. The cast of this movie has Dharmendra, Reena Roy, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Nirupa Roy, Asrani, Sharda, Amrish Puri, Dara Singh others. Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and Anand Bakshi is the lyricist.
This song is a background song sung by S.P. Balasubramaniam. I had an impression that this is a multi-part song but it is not the case. Knowledgeable readers can please correct me.
When one watch this song and watches him jumping with both his hands in the air, smile on his face, with the crowd around him and gradually disappearing in the crowd, it appears symbolic, as if he is bidding farewell to us while departing for the heavenly abode.
