A R Rahman – The Musician of 21st Century – 7
The revival of the series on A. R. Rehman is beginning with this post. The last post in the series was this song.
I apologise for my tardiness in leaving the series like this for 2.5 years. None but myself to be blamed for not taking the targets/tasks seriously. Maybe that is the reason none of my series appear in the list of series posted in the blog.
Koyi nai, I plough on doggedly. Not that it is a hard task to find ARR gems, sometimes forgotten in decades old fog. Take the songs of “Saathiya” for instance.
Have seen the movie on cable TV, songs were always around. I could also relate that these songs are from this film which was a debut film of Vivek Oberoi. But had never heard the words carefully. The melody and title were definitely ‘Saathiya” in the subconscious.
Lyrics of “Chhalka Chhalka re” are noted down, but I will get to thatafter some more posts. I have songs of “Dil se”, ‘Bombay”, “Guru” and some more listed as future posts in this series. Obviously, I am running 30 years behind schedule, covering ARR songs. Delhi – 6 and Taal too, some of their softer songs. Rang de Basanti and Yuvraaj too shall surface.
I will have to make sure, to work only on unposted songs. Take the only song of Saathiya posted in the blog. Sadanand Kamath Sir has detailed the story of the film in this post, also giving fascinating background of the words, terms in the lyrics.
As ARR inspired generations of Indian musicians since the 90’s, so has Gulzar inspired mature and amateur poets throughout. Sonu Nigam is credited as the sole singer in the credits, but there is lots of chorus in the song, almost camouflaged in the sounds of music. Even ARR’s voice can be detected, or is that Sonu Nigam himself? With mixing recording technology, it is possible to make a group song with a solo singer. Earlier, only the echo was used to enhance the singers voice, to make it sound double.
Awards
· 2002 – Filmfare Awards – Best Lyricist – Gulzar
· 2002 – IIFA Awards – Best Male Playback Singer – Sonu Nigam
· 2002 – Filmfare Awards – Best Male Playback Singer – Sonu Nigam
Trivia
· The team of Mani Ratnam, A.R. Rahman and Gulzar had first explored the concept of different shades of love in “Satrangi Re” (“Dil Se”, 1998). Mani Ratnam wanted to further explore this concept, and this resulted in the song “Pachchai Nirame” (“Alaiypayuthe”,2000), the original Tamil version of this song.
This song is a about ‘Saat rang bahaaron ke”, with visuals also in different colour. So, it is apt for the 7th post in the series. Peela, Sabz, Siyaah, barf giri ho waadi mein(White), abr(meaning clouds) and also “oon”(wool). Poetry out of the mundane. Outdoor locations, favourite of YRF, enhance the poetry and the composition. No doubt inspired the singer for the superlative rendition. So, we have a Sonu Nigam song to follow a Sonu Nigam song in this series.
Also, the geeli hansi, hanste rehna, teri hansi goonje, etc. about Rani Mukherjee. There is not longer audio to be found. It ends when it does with “Ujla dhuaan”.

Thank you for the correction Sir. It was my own hunch/impression, for what could be a better launch pad than a YRF film. That also a solo hero film with top notch team, for remake of southern film.
regards.

But, it was a tailor made debut for Vivek Oberoi. His performance got rave reviews ( heavyweights like Mohanlal, Ajay Devgan were there ) and he won 2 Filmfare awards: Best supporting actor and Best debut male.
