This is the last song and culmination of a short series of posts about inspired/copied songs. The team of creators of this song from Sangharsh(1999) is Jatin-Lalit, Sameer and Sonu Nigam. This inspiration behind this song is the OPN song from “Ek Musaafir Ek Hasina”.

Before internet and Youtube, it may have been easy to simply copy or lift a song created by someone else and pass it off as your own. Lay persons who are not actually conversant with music and composition process would not be able to find a link.

There is the famed instance of Madan Mohan doing this sort of thing, and using the tune from Sajjad Hussain’s “Sangdil” song “Ye hawa ye raat ye chaandni”, for his song “Tujhe kya sunaaun main dilruba” in “Aakhri Daao” (1958). In fact Madan Mohan went on to use the same tune for the song “hai isi mein pyar ki aabroo” in Anpadh (1962).

In fact, the tune is also very similar for this ghazal rendition in Laal Qila.

Coming back to the song from Sangharsh(1999), the singer Sonu Nigam is trying to sing the style of Kishore Kumar, which he does in many songs, but here the precedent is a Rafi rendition. It appears to a deliberate attempt to make the song sound different from the “Ek Musafir Ek Haseena” song.

I have seen this movie on cable TV, so can try to give a bit of the background. It was about the horrors of ‘child sacrifice’ and black magic like issues that are a part of ancient dogmas prevalent in some parts. Practices like child sacrifice for attaining immortality. Ashutosh Rana played the character of the tantric/fanatic, which is looking to sacrifice a particular child of certain physical attributes, at a particular time and hour determined by some principles of black magic on a full moon night. The takeaway of the film was Ashutosh Rana’s performance as the tantric.

Priety Zinta is a police officers who is assigned to solve this case of case of saving the child kidnapped by the tantric.

Akshay Kumar is a professor in jail, the crime is unclear. Priety Zinta needs Akshay’s help to solve the case and save the child from being sacrificed.

The topic was certainly unique, never dealt before in hindi films. Priety Zinta visits Akshay Kumar in jail and he manages to spook her so much that she calls her friend Aman Verma in Delhi to share her fear and insecurity. Aman Verma is trying to reassure her divert her attention from her fears of past and present by singing this song on the phone.

So this is a phone song too. The funny part is Aman Verma’s phone goes dead while is song is still going on, he goes to a public phone booth to complete the song. Complete it does, with the donkeys surrounding the phone booth 🙂 🙂

At the outset I must admit that I am a little confused as I write this post. The person/ celebrity/ actress/ star for whose birthday this is, has aged gracefully and looks fabulous even now. But I am confused about her year of birth. When I wrote this post Phir Bhor Bhayee Jaaga Madhuban in 2018 I found information on various sites on the internet by which I had mentioned that she was turning 64. Over the last few weeks I am finding information by which she would be 74 this year. Can a person age 10 years in two years?

Let me explain. In the past few weeks, during this lockdown, one of the satellite channels, showed an old episode of one their dance reality shows where Bindu and Aruna Irani were guests of honour (found out today that they are cousins). This must have been one of the episodes which was originally telecast in the last two years. And I told my husband (bless him for enduring all these re-runs with me) that Bindu turns 69 this year and Aruna Irani is a few years younger and how well she has looked after herself and maintained herself. Then as I was googling to confirm the dates of birth of the two, I was surprised to see that the year of birth is given as 1946. Anyways there is a saying “not to ask a lady her age and a man his wage.” So, let us just wish our dear Aruna Irani a very Happy and healthy life.

She has had along wait before she could settle in life with a man who loved her. She made her debut in movies at a young age of 8 or 9 playing the young Azra in “Gunga Jamuna”. She had to give up on schooling so that she could help support the family which had financial problems and could not educate all eight children. I find that this is the story of many actors of that time. Her father was an Irani and mother a Hindu. Her brothers Indra Kumar (who made the Aamir Khan Madhuri Dixit starrer DIL), Adi Irani (plays mainly character roles in movies and television), Firoz Irani (also an actor. producer, writer, director) are all well settled in the entertainment industry and she has had a major hand in setting them up.

She claims that she was a bad dancer who learnt dancing on-the-job. We have seen her comic side in movies where she had paired with Mehmood in the 70s and later in movies where she was with Asrani and Kadar Khan. She was the topmost actress in Gujarati movies even as she played supporting characters in Hindi, Marathi, Kannada etc. I remember seeing her in the Tamil remake of “Deewar” essaying the same mujra as she had done in Hindi- the song “koi mar jaaye kisi pe yeh kahan dekha hai”. She has produced and directed a few serials and acted in them too.
Today, for her birthday we will be seeing her as a not-so-young bua to Karisma Kapoor and Pooja Batra who are elated that she has finally found someone and likes him enough to think of marrying him. The song is at the engagement of the bua with Pooja’s fiance’s (Sanjay Dutt) uncle/ chachaji Rai Bahadur (Govinda). This movie has the two heroes trying to woo the heroines only Govinda has to double up as chacha and bhatija. In the process, before the niece the bua gets wooed.

The song is from David Dhawan directed “Haseena Maan Jaayegi” (1999) which had Anupam Kher playing the father of the girls, Kadar Khan played father of the boys. A part of the movie is inspired by “Pyaar Kiye Jaa” and we have Govinda donning a grey wig and beard and playing his own chacha. Paresh Rawal, Ashish Vidyarthi adding spice to this all round comedy.

The song is in the voices of Sonu Nigam, Kavita Krishnamurthy and Ravi Shankar (hearing this name for the first time). Anu Malik is the music director and Sameer the lyrics in-charge.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 39

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Joru Ka Ghulaam’ a movie released in 2000. By the standards of the blog it is ‘new’ movie, but if we think about it dispassionately, 2000 was 20 years ago, and so this movie is already twenty years old by now. That is how time flies!!

The name ‘Joru Ka Ghulaam’ will also remind readers of the Rajesh Khanna movie of the same name that was released in 1972. That movie was considered to be unsuccessful at the box office at that time, but now some online sites (perhaps run by people who were not born by 1972) claim that it was a ‘hit’ movie. This movie of 1972 had some nice songs in it. Nainon mein nindiyaa hai was my most favorite song from this movie. All songs of this movie have already been covered in the blog.

Ten years ago on 05.07.2010, three songs were covered on the blog including one song each from “Joru Ka Ghulam”(1972) and “Joru Ka Ghulaam”(2000).

We can see that a good ‘variety’ of songs was presented on this day ten years ago. 🙂

‘Joru Ka Ghulaam-2000’ was directed by Shakeel Noorani for Noorani Film Corporation’. He was also the producer of this movie. Shadab Noorani was the executive producer of this movie and Nilesh Ronghe was the chief assistant director.

The movie had Govinda, Twinkle Khanna, Kader Khan, Ashok Saraf, Ashish Vidyarthi, Ali Asgar and Johny Lever, supported by Razak Khan, Sonu Sagar, Rushika, Rajashree, Ghansyam, Moses, Rakhi Sawant, Bobby Vatsa and many others.

Story and screenplay of this movie was written by Ikram Akhtar. Whereas the dialogues of this movie were written by Tanveer Khan. Editing was done by Sudhir Verma. Ganesh Acharya was the choreographer for this movie. Dinesh Telkar was the cinematographer.

Sameer was the lyricist for the songs of this movie and Aadesh Shrivastava was the music director.

So far only one song from this movie has been posted on the blog and that was exactly ten years ago on 05.07.2010.

Today’s song is another typical Govinda type dance song, but then it had the special music of Aadesh Shrivastava who has given some special rhythms of ‘Bhojpuri’ folk and had created many songs in his own style which always give a fresh mood to the listeners to enjoy.

Coming back to today’s song the song is picturised on Govinda, Johny Lever and others. (I am not aware of the female artist in the song).
Sonu Nigam and Aadesh Shrivastava are the singers of this song. Lyrics are by Sameer.

I had never watched this movie but remember this song and it also reminds of the ‘neeche paan ki dukaan, upar gori ka makaan’ scene of Amitabh and Shashi Kapoor from ‘Silsilaa-1981’, where both of them are in drunken state and wandering on streets. 🙂 I hope my recollection is correct.

So, here is one more Govinda songs after ‘Raja Babu-1994’ under the ‘ten-year challenge series. One can guess that the blog and our editor was suitably impressed by Govinda movies ten years ago which saw song from these Govinda movies being discussed, despite these movies being recent movies by the standards of the blog. 🙂

There are a few dates that every Indian knows by heart. For instance. Independence day (15 august), Republic day (26 january) and Mahatma Gandhi birth anniversary (2 october). India observes official holidays on these days.

There are some more important days in the history of India and most of them have to do with birth / death anniversaries of eminent persons. These dates are mostly associated with Indian freedom struggle followed by birth pangs of Independence.

The newly independent India was a desperately poor, undernourised, illiterate nation, lying in utter disarray and confusion. There were a few famous foreigners who were convnced that India as a nation was going to be shortlived.

The first few decades of independent India were very difficult. Indians had low self esteem and they had little to show for at the world level in any sphere.

Sports was considered a luxury that the poor nation could not afford. It was popularly believed that one who studied moved ahead in life whereas one who devoted time to sports was a slacker who would be a failure in his future life. -“Padhoge likhoge banoge nawaab Kheloge koodoge hoge kharaab”- it was a very popular saying in Hindi. There is even a song in a Hindi movie containing his idiom.

India had very few sporting achievements. Indians celebrated those few and far between sporting achievements quite hard. India was a powerhouse in Hockey and they used to win gold medals in Olympics continuously till 1956 Olympics. After that they began to get challenged, first by newly independent Pakistan (who won the gold in 1960 Olympics defeating India) and then by Europe and the downfall of Indian hockey began. 1964 Olympics gold and 1975 World cup title were exceptions rather than rule. After 1975, India never won any major international Hockey tournament.

India was no good in any other sports.

Cricket was very popular in India though this popularity did not translate into excellence. Cricket was popular among the “middle” class Indians. Majority of Indians considered themselves as “Middle” class those days. The reason why cricket was popular among “middle” class public had to to with its dress. While one needed to wear shorts to play other games which was considered infra dig by “middle” class Indians, cricket was played while wearing full pants, and so one felt like a sahab rather than a lowly individual while playing cricket. It was a “saala main to saahab ban gaya” kind of feeling for Indians who took to cricket.

Till mid 1970s, longer version of cricket, played in white dress, was the only form of cricket. Despite the popularity of cricket in India, Indian cricketers, with some honourable exceptions, were by and large quite mediocre at international level. The top players of England would not even tour India, and that gave India the opportunity to defeat a depleted English team in 1951-52, which was the first test win for India in test cricket. For next two decades, Indian registered some infrequent test wins, mostly against weak and / or new comer teams, viz Pakistan and new Zealand.

1971 to 1973 was a surprising purple patch for India when they managed to win three test series in a row, against West Indies in 1971, against England in 1971, and in home series against England during 1972-73. But this freak run against depleted sides was too good to last and India got soundly thrashed in their next test series against England in England during 1974.

During that disastrous tour, India played two limited overs match against England and lost tamely.

The first Limited overs world cup was played in England in 1975. Indian public as well as cricketers had no clue about the rules of the game. That was demonstrated rather dramatically during the opening match of that world cup. England piled on 334/ 4 in 60 overs. India in reply, crawled to 132/ 3. Gavaskar, opening the innings, scored 36 runs and remained not out ! He was perhaps trying to play out the overs and draw the match ! The fact that playing out overs and not scoring runs did not avoid defeat, unlike in test matches was not known to many.

In that world cup, India lost every match, except one which they played against a rag tag team of expatriates who represented a team called “East Africa”. East Africa was a collection of club level players from various African nations. India was able to record their only victory of the world cup against this team.

India did even worse in the next world cup in 1979. this time they lost all the matches. Their most humiliating defeat was against Sri Lanka, who at that time were an associate team, they were not yet a test team.

When the third world cup was held in England in 1983, then it was being considered yet another cakewalk for West indies, who had won both the world cups and whose team boasted of strong batting line up and a fearsome pace bowling quartet. They were so strong that other teams would write off their chances against West Indies and would concentrate on winning other matches.

Indian public as well as players were sure that it would be yet another forgettable world cup for them. Some cricketers had already planned to go visit USA on a sight seeing tour after the group stage matches.

This world cup had two groups of four teams each. In each group, the teams played each other twice. The top two teams qualified for the semi finals.

The first group match that India played was against West Indies ! Because of rain interruptions, this match was played over two days. India batting first scored a so so total of 262/8. Yashpal Sharma, with 89 runs, held the innings together where the second highest score was only 36 runs by Sandip Patil. West Indies, after a decent start, suddenly had a middle order collapse against the dibbly dobbly military medium bowling attack of Sandhu, Madanlal and Roger Binny who claimed 5 wickets among themselves. At 130/8 , West Indies were in big trouble, but their tail then began to wag valiantly. Just when it appeared like the tail were taking West Indies to a famous fighting win, Ravi Shashtri struck to claim the two vital tailender wickets. West Indies were bowled out for 228 ! It was a major upset. It was the first ever world cup defeat for West Indies, It was the first ever win for India against a test side (only the second win for them in world cup).

The next match for India was against Zimbabwe, an associate team, and India won comfortably.

Then normal world cup service seemed to resume for India. They lost their next two matches tamely, by 162 runs (against Australia) and 66 runs (against West Indies).

After two wins and two losses, India played Zimbabwe again. While batting first, India were in dire straights at 17/5. Overconfidence by the entire batting line up plus good use of swinging and bouncy conditions by Zimbabwean bowlers had brought India on its knees. The entire top order, viz Gavaskar (0) , Srikkanth (0) , Mohinder Amarnath (5), Sandeep Patil (1) and Yashpal Sharma (9) were blown away. Only bowlers and wicktkeeper were left, who were not known for any great batting feats at international level.

Kapildev (the captain) and Roger Binny took the score to 77, when Binny fell for a gritty 22. Next man Shashtri fell for one, and India was 78/ 7 ! Next man in was Madanlal, he scored 17 and fell when the score was 140.

At 140/8, it appeared as if India was going to maintain its past record of losing to an associate team in the world cup. Incidentally, Zimbabwe had already defeated Australia in this world cup in their very first world cup match.

Kirmani, the wicket keeper was definitely the last hope because Sandhu after him was a perfect rabbit with the bat. Kirmani held his end intact and concentrated on protecting his wicket. He faced 56 balls and scored 24 not out.

All this while, Kapildev was going alone sedately. Coming in at 9/4, he saw off the rampaging opening bowers Rawson and Curran, who bowled bulk of their quota of overs in their opening spell.

After initial jitters, Kapildev began to open up. He had already reached into late 70s when the eighth wicket fell for 140. The eight batsmen who fell had contributed just 55 runs among themselves.

After the fall of eighth wicket, Kapildev started to throw his bat around. The boundary was short on one side and longer on the other, but most Kapildev sixes (six of them) were straight sixes over long on boundary where the boundary was long. Kapildev struck six sixes and 16 fours. When Rawson and Curran returned to finish off their balance quota of overs, they were pulverised, being struck at over ten runs per over.

Kapildev did not give any real chances. He chanced his arms and his hits fell on no man’s land. It was Kapildev’s day out on that day of 18 june 1983.

India reached a respectable looking 266/ 8, a total that looked impossible for most parts of the innings.

While chasing, Zimbabwe were off to a decent start. their first wicket fell at 44, but after that, Indian dibbly dobbly trundlers (Sandhu, Madanlal, Binny and Mohinder Amarnath) did all the damage, with Kapildev taking the final wicket. India had won by 31 runs. It was not a case of India getting out of jail, rather it was like India escaping from the gallows !

Suddenly, India, who looked like going home, were in the reckoning for a semi final spot. They were second in the group with 12 points behind West Indies. Final group match of India was with Australia who were third in the group with 8 points and they too had a chance to pip Indians to the post by defeating india by a decent margin and going through on equal points but better run rate.

This India vs Australia match was a virtual quarter final. India batting first scored what looked like a poorish total of 247 all out in 55. 5 overs.

While chasing, Australia lost their first wicket cheaply with the score on 3. It was the prized wicket of Trevor Chappel who was man of the match in their previous encounter in the tournament. But the second wicket began to score runs and started to look threatening. Just when I and my hostel mates began to despair, the second wicket fell at 46, then the third at 48, fourth at 52, fifth at 52, sixth at 67 etc etc. The trundling trio of Sandhu (2 wickets), Madanlal (4 wickets) and Binny (4 wickets) skittled Australia out for 129 and took India to semifinal. It was something that was looking out of question just two days back.

The day when India stormed into the semi final was 20 june 1983. I was in my hostel where it was a tradition that birthday boy of the day would treat entire hostel with Mithai. That day happened to be my birthday, and the mithai celebration turned out to be quite sweet and memorable for all concerned.

The memory of semi final was a blur. Most Indian wins (except one) came when India batted first. But this time India bowled first and restricted England to 213. India concentrated to keeping wickets in hand. India emerged a comfortable winner in the end in a chase that they executed well, though they gave anxious moments to Indian fans, apparently showing no urgency to score quickly in the middle overs.

Three matches in five days, and three wins. India were in the final of the world cup !

Three days later, it was another sunday. The date was 25 june 1983. The day of the final.

Those were the days when only Delhi and perhaps Bombay had TV. Most part of India only had Radio. Listening to cricket match commentary in a hostel with lots of like minded hostelmates was quite an experience. Everyone had radios, but majority of people would throng together to listen to the commentary on one single radio. If I recall correctly, that used to be the radio of a person who was a cricket enthusiast and claimed to be related to Sharmila Tagore based on the resemblance of his teeth with that of Sharmila Tagore. 🙂

We listened to the commentary of Indian batting, but there was not much to cheer about. India kept losing wickets at regular intervals and India was bowled out for a paltry 183. Chasing 183 was no big deal for West Indies. They were set a similar target in the semifinal against Pakistan and they had romped home with ease, winning by eight wickets with 11.2 overs to spare.

The innings break coincided with our dinner break in the hostel. After dinner, people would traditionally go on an after dinner walk towards the golf course located in front of the hostel some half a km away. West Indies innings had started by then. India claimed an early wicket, but that only brought Viv Richards to the crease. He was going hammer and tongs at the Indian bowling. All of us were reconciled to the fact that it was going to be a one sided match, with west indies winning comfortably.

Then, against the run of play, we gathered that a wicket had fallen, and it was the wicket of Richards ! A big sigh of relief. But West Indies was not a one batsman team. they has a long and strong batting line up. Even their wicket keeper and tailenders could score runs. Moreover he target was not much. A few hefty blows from some batsman, and the match would be decided.

While listening to the commentary, more in hope than real expectation, we found the fourth and fifth wickets falling at the same score, and the wickets were that of Larry Gomes and Clive Lloyd. At 76/6 , Bacchus, another thorn in Indian flesh was gone. Both of the had scored big double centuries against india in India.

Dujon and Marshal gave anxious moments to Indian bowlers. Then Dujon fell to Mohinder Amarnath . 119 for 7 ! Then 8 for 124. Marshal gone, he too to Mohinder Amarnath.

Finally, West Indies resistance came to an end at 140. A 43 run victory for India. So the world had a new champion, an out rightly unexpected champion. If West Indies was to be dethroned, one would expect any team other than India to achieve it. But it turns out that it was the Indian David that slayed the West Indian Goliath.

West Indies had won the earlier two world cups. Their title wins did nothing much for world cricket. But this unexpected fluke win of India against all odds changed the game of cricket ! Indian interest in the game suddenly moved on to the next higher gear. So much so that Indians began to invest far more in cricket. The Indian industry, far smaller and modest then than what it is now, began to take much more interest in cricket. So much so that the world cup which was always held in England and always sponsored by Prudential Bank of England,, was held the next time in Indian subcontinent. This time it was sponsored by an up and coming Indian business house called Reliance ! In 1983, India was considered an also ran, but by 1987, India was a strong title contender ! It is another matter than India lost in the semifinal itself.

1983 win was a fluke no doubt. But he future results showed that Indian cricket had arrived at world stage after this fluke world cup win. Two years later, there was a World Championship of cricket in Australia. India, because of its defeat at home to England in 1984-85 was being considered as a no hoper. Kapildev, the world cup winner in 1983, had lost his captaincy and Gavaskar was made the captain for this WCC. Once again, defying all predictions, India won all their matches, remained undefeated and lifted the WCC title. So it was like Fluke title won 1983 was followed by its sequel, fluke title win II ! Later there would be some ODI tournament wins for India. India began to be counted among favourites in all subsequent world cups.

That is not all. Indians began to take interest in running the administration of ICC (international cricket council) which was till then a preserve of British stiff upper lip Lords who were running it in a manner that was hardly helping popularise the game. Indian businessman, such as Jagmohan Dalmia, took over the running of ICC, and improved the financial condition of ICC beyond all recognition. Today ICC is one of the richest sporting body. It is richer than most sporting bodies where Indians do not take interest. For instance, Rugby is a sport in which cricket playing nations like England, Australia and New Zealand take interest, but India does not. Resul ! International body of Rugby earns far less than ICC.

Much of ICC riches (around 70 % of it) today comes from India. That is how much money Indian market contributes to world cricket. It is this Indian market that has made BCCI one of the richest sporting body of a cuntry, richer than ICC in fact. Seeds of all these giant Oak trees were sown on this day 37 years ago, thanks to that miraculous fluke title win on 25 june 1983 !

25 june 1983 gave Indians immense self confidence that they too can do it. And as mentioned above, they used this win to advance their cricket. Cricket academies sprung up all over India, and some of them were by private companies. For instance, a pace academy came up in Madras, called MRF pace academy. Fans of other countries mocked it, but if today Indian pace attack is considered one of the best pace attacks, then remember, it is the result of three decades of investment on training of pace bowlers in different academies spread all over India. And that started only after this great fluke event that took place on 25 june 198.

This win inspired not just India, but its neighbours too, who may not admit it openly but they look up to India and get inspired. Interest in cricket picked up in these nations too. Pakistan won the world cup in 1992 and Sri Lanka announced its arrival in cricket scene by unexpectedly winning the world cup in 1996. Three world cup title wins out of four between 1983 and 1996 ! All this was made possible because of that first title win in 1983 ! Even Bangladesh became a cricket crazy nation and started to play international cricket from 2000.

Other sports too benefited in India. Indian Sportsmen in other sports too began to have more self belief. One great example is that of Indian chess. Just like India was supposedly considered incapable to producing fast bowlers till 1970s, India was also considerd incapable of producing Chess grandmasters. Those days, India had just two international masters, that was all. AICF (All India Chess Federation) began to invest more in organising chess tournaments inviting strong chess players from abroad. India saw its first Grand master in 1987 in the form of Vishwanathan Anand in 1987. Later on, he became World Champon as well. He inspired whole lot of Indians to take up Chess. Today India has some 60 off Chess Grandmasters and based on average ELO raking of the top ten chess players in the world, India is among top four strongest chess playing nation in the world !

Likewise one can add the example of Indian Badminton too.

To mark this major major achievement of Indian sport in general and Indian cricket inparticular, here is a cricket song from “Ferrari Ki Sawaari”(2012). This film was produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and directed by Rajesh Mapuskar for ‘Vinod Chopra films’. This movie had Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, Ritvik Sahore, Seema Pahwa, Aakash Dabhade, Deepak Shirke, Paresh Rawal, Satyadeep Mishra, Achyut Potdar, Bhalchandra Kadam, Vijay Nikam, Nilesh Diwekar and others, with a special appearance by Vidhya Balan.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala. He not only discovered this cricket song, he sent its lyrics to me specially tomark the occasion of Indian world cup win on 25 june 1983 ! He certainly keeps an eagle eye on important days in the annals of Indian history !

This is one of the songs of which made an impact at the time of watching the film.  I had seen this film ‘Phir bhi dil hai Hindustani’ in theatre.  This was before the multiplexes, so there were only the theatres, where the folks went to see the movie.

Now in multiplexes which are always above malls, there is the added temptation of shopping. This must be the reason, my husband is so reluctant to go to watch a movie. Over the last few years, I have also lost all interest in watching movies, altogether. As a weekend approaches, I am thinking I want to see this film or that film.  Some of those I have seen earlier or some which I have never seen. But the weekend comes and goes, without my attempting to watch them. There must be lot of reasons for this lack of motivation. For almost two months now, a 2017 movie’s link is sitting in the browser, but I have not watched it. Recently I even got my old laptop working so that I could watch some of the long pending movies and dramas. I saw a rerun of a few dramas, but new ones I am very reluctant to start. Sometimes I feel that there is a reluctance in me, to see newer things, which may supersede what has been seen earlier. It is strange, but there.

The film ‘Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’ (2000) is a movie worth seeing or even revisiting for some of us who have seen it. Or the reviews of the film on the IMDB site make us believe. What I remember of the film is that SRK and Juhi are both television news presenters, and there is a lot of comic situations and romantic songs. Eventually they get embroiled in a nexus of politicians with the owners of the media channels, for whom they work. The song which is most endearing in the film is the title song “Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani“.  I had a general idea that the movie was ahead of its time and relevant to the electronic media’s role in the hyperbola of fear psychosis, that seems to surface every now and then.  I wrote about the role of media as a pawn in creation of propaganda in my essay ‘Corruption- A Global Phenomena’ in my post for the song “Apne Haathon Ko Pehchaan” from the 1960 film ‘Apna Haath Jagannath’.

Just recently I remembered the title song, looked for it and saw some other songs of the film including the group song which is the present post. The singers team is the old and trusted one, Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik with chorus. The song is very catchy and relevant to the party scene happening in the film. Reminds me of another song by the duo from ‘Yuvraj’ (2008) – “Mast Mast Dar Mastam“.

As I didn’t remember much about the film, and possibility of watching it soon is also remote, I visited the IMDB page.  The movie synopsis given there is quite lengthy and complicated.  Better to turn to reviews of which there are plenty.  Some of the reviews which were brief, I am reproducing here.

People expected a romcom but turned to be product which was attempted before in ‘Main Azad Hoon’. “Way ahead of its time in the Indian context. Audiences in late 90s-early 2000s just wanted to see a romcom, especially if it featured SRK. The movie starts off that way but takes a political turn which exposes the nexus between people in power. It kind of displays the current situation in India in the year 2019. A lot of scenes would remind viewers of real-life situations that have occurred in the country over the past few years.  Maybe it was too much to take in for the viewers of the early 2000s, but this film would be a sure shot hit if it were to be released today or it may get banned in the country. Although, it does get too melodramatic in the final sequence.”

Certainly that this has been my own opinion all these years.  Every time we see a media circus, hypocrisy happening around, this was a recall sort of movie. A few of these reviews are giving the movie 10/10 rating.  Some are calling it highly underrated and a prelude to ‘Rang de Basanti’ (2006) etc. I personally feel it was less seriously tackled than ‘Rang De Basanti’, packaged more as a satirical comedy.

Song is very colourful for sure.  Jatin – Lalit are the composers and lyrics are by Javed Akhtar. On screen we see a few other artists, notably Satish Shah, Johnny Lever, Shakti Kapoor, Dalip Tahil, Dilip Doshi and others.

Hullo Atuldom

May 3 is not any celebrities birthday going by the listings on the anniversaries page of the blog. But a more important date for followers of movies. That was the date when the first Indian movie released in the year 1913.

“Raja Harishchandra” directed and produced by Shri. Dhundiraj Govind Phalke a.k.a Dadasaheb Phalke, was a silent film that released in Bombay’s Coronation Cinematograph and Variety Hall, Girgaon on 3rd May 1913 after a Premier at Olympia Theatre on 21st April. This was the genesis of the Indian Film Industry which has been entertaining generations since then. The movies, as we have come to love, has thrown up stories that are inspired from our mythology, history, real-life experiences etc. There are fans for a “Jai Santoshi Maa” as well as “Sholay”. I remember that when the Malayalam movie “Swami Ayyappan” came to the theatres in Bombay (it had hit the marquee in 1975 in Kerala) Manoj Kumar’s “Kranti” had also released and our family chose to see the Malayalam movie as it gave us an insight into the life and times of the lord Ayyappa.

Today we are having a song, from a movie, whose title is inspired from a famous song of the late 70s. The director of the movie was a person who has grown up in the film industry (so to say) as he is the son of a famous producer-director. The cast is headed by a fan of movies who himself has a huge fan-following.

I am talking of a song from the 2008 released “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” (meaning “Match made in the heavens”) which was written and directed by Aditya Chopra, son of Yash Chopra who was also the producer of the film. And I need not add that Yash Chopra was a successful producer- director who began his innings in the film industry in the 50s. The movie had a cast headed by Anushka Sharma and Shahrukh Khan.

Today’s song happens when the lead pair have gone to see movie. “A cinema inside a cinema” as I would like to put it. The lady- Taani (Anushka) is bored with the proceedings on the screen. Then she imagines that one of her acquaintances has jumped on to the screen and then the whole atmosphere perks up. He says: “Taani partner do not fear when Raj is here. Humne bhi Ishq ke ustaadon se seekha hai” (I think those are his exact words). And then the song starts.

IMHO this song can claim to be fully inspired by all the preceding generations of actors and actresses. We have Shahrukh Khan and Kajol beginning the song as Raj Kapoor and Nargis, this is followed by Shahrukh as Dev Anand and Bipasha Basu as Sadhana. Then we have Lara Dutta as Helen to Shahrukh’s Shammi Kapoor act which is followed by Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore by SRK and Preity Zinta. The song has SRK and Rani Mukherjee reminding us of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh. So basically we go down memory lane as we see this song and try and relive the 50s, 60s and 70s.

I must complement the lyricist Jaideep Sahni for coming up with a song that had to have pre-existing words/lyrics/thoughts. One must not miss how “Babu Moshai” has fitted beautifully into the song. Also worth mentioning the art director’s and set designer’s contributions. They have done so much detailing- we should not miss the book that Preity as Sharmila Tagore is trying to read. It is called “Amar Prem” and has a photo of Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore from “Aradhana” in the song ‘Kora kaagaz tha ye mann mera’. Also we should not miss the huge Raj Kapoor hat at the start of the song as also the Dev Anand Cap, the eye from where the Shammi Kapoor segment starts and finally the long scarfs/mufflers that Rishi Kapoor used to sport and the steps that he and Neetu were exponents of. We should not forget the choreographer too. The composers Salim-Suleiman have also showed that they have also grown up on this fodder. They had an unenviable task of making a song from the music that was tuned by the legends of Bollywood and also not make a bad rehash.

Let us also enjoy this tribute to the great Ustaads (masters).

P.S: After I wrote this post I realized that 3rd May also happens to be Nargis’s death anniversary. It is 39 years since her passing and it was Dadasaheb Phalke’s birth anniversary on 30th April 1870- 150th birthdate.

A great day today. The remembrance day of one of most recognized icons of the Golden Era of Hindi film music. Rafi Sb. The name says it all. It is our own compulsions that drive us to write again and again about him, but yes, the name says it all. The mere mention brings to mind spontaneously, the journey spanning four decades, and thousands of rich gems that he rendered and bequeathed to us. The one voice that makes loving this music oh so easy.

We already have two posts today, enriching his memory, and talking about his work and his personality. The adjectives and epithets have all been used, time and again, so one is at a loss to say new things about him. There is a celebration gathering that happens at this residence today. Many devoted fans from across the country are in Bombay for this occasion. Our dear Bakshi ji is there today – have to hear from him his account of the visit to Rafi Mansion today.

Besides Bakshi ji, there are two more very good friends who are there today. Both of them are in the category of devotion beyond definition. It is a devotion that takes on the form of worship, which in of itself is a quality to be appreciated. Their life is all about Rafi Sb, their work is all about trying to perpetuate his memory. My meeting with them individually was through other friends, who introduced us. And it did not take any time to acknowledge and understand – this is going to be a lifelong association. I will briefly talk about them today.

Ahsan Qasim is a resident of Hapur, a small town that is about one a half hour’s drive from Delhi. He runs a small restaurant in his neighborhood, and has also setup a small coaching school for basic teaching of English and computers. He is an avid searcher and collector of anything that relates to Rafi Sb. As of now, we are quite much at the limits of Rafi Sb’s recorded songs. Yes, some numbers are still not accounted for, and I dare say, some numbers are still to be identified, given the gap in information available for some untraceable films of the era. But that does not limit his search. He is continuously searching for recordings of live programs, sitting through complete films looking to find out snippets of Rafi Sb’s voice used for items that do not qualify as complete songs, and hence have not been part of 78 rpm or LP releases. The verses sung in the film ‘Pyaasa’ (1957) are quite well known. But there are dozens of more such snippets that Ahsan Bhai has searched out.

He also collects videos of Rafi Sb’s songs, and hence he also continuously digging to locate films that are not yet in public domain. He has a channel on YouTube by his own name. He continuously adds to it – rare audios and videos of Rafi Sb songs. Recently he has uploaded a small video segment of a Rafi Sb song from the film ‘Kahin Aur Chal’ (1968), a film that decidedly has been categorized as lost, for now.

He has made a detailed listing of all the stars, and many who do not qualify as stars, to whom Rafi Sb has given playback. Rafi Sb never shied away from singing for completely new and unknown actors, as well as on screen characters. Ahsan Bhai’s drive is to identify such actors – he has a list and video clips of many totally unknown faces who are lip syncing Rafi Sb’s voice. And to say the least, his endeavor to dig out old films has been so beneficial for armchair collectors like me. 🙂 He is the person who was finally able to acquire ‘Karvaan e Hayaat’ and shared with me. Like so, he has dug out many other rare films, which we know that are not available in public domain.

The second person I wish to talk about today is another dear friend – Arun Gautam. The name plate outside his door reads as ‘Rafi Arun Gautam’. He is a resident of Delhi. When I visited his home for the first time, I was amazed to see – he has one room completely devoted to Rafi Sb. The room is almost like a museum, and also a room where he hosts his friends for listening sessions. The walls of the room are adorned with portraits and photographs of Rafi Sb, some are absolutely rare. All the shelves are full of books, cassette tapes, 78 rpm records and LPs. In between spaces are full of small and large memorabilia that relates to Rafi Sb. There is a harmonium, although not the original, but an exact replica of the one owned by Rafi Sb. There is telephone instrument, with Rafi Sb’s home phone number written on it – once again an exact replica of the original. There are two small cars (toy cars actually) – one a white Ambassador, and the second one a red Fiat, complete with the actual numbers on the number plates. The cars models and numbers are exactly the ones owned by Rafi Sb. There is a small statue of Rafi Sb. There are road signs – place of birth of Rafi Sb, his residence area in Bombay etc. I mean, it is a real treat for the fans of Rafi Sb. And Arun ji has such a childlike pleasure as he shows us visitors around the room.

There is an old gramophone player – the original HMV 102. If any of the readers have heard this sound they will understand. And for those who haven’t, I recommend them to listen to one if possible. Arun ji has a Philips player also – which is electronic. He played the same records on both the machines. The sound from the 102 – it shook my inside. Never ever have I heard such a complete and such a rich sound being reproduced from a 78 rpm record. Yes, we all know that the 78 rpm recording and reproduction is the ultimate. But that day, listening on the 102 was an unsurpassed, never before experience. A machine that is just cranked by hand, no electric or electronics involved. Just a very good sound box and a very good needle. The sound filled the room as I have never heard before. And with the same childlike eagerness, Arun ji played so many rare records. Not that we have not heard the audio before. But the records themselves are so rare, only one or maybe a few acknowledged copies to be existing in public domain. It was a memorable session we had that day, on my first visit. And of course, followed up later with more such sessions.

Arun ji also played some very rare and unheard snippets. Do you know that Rafi Sb has sung two lines of the immortal ghazal of Saigal Sb from ‘Shahjehan’ – “Gham Diye Mustaqil. . .”. This snippet is hidden away in the film ‘Reporter Raju’ (1962); it is not on any record, and only someone painstakingly searching for such things will be fortunate enough to locate it. And then, at the end of the session, as we were preparing to say goodbye, he asked us to wait for a minute. He went inside, and returned with a small plastic package. Opening it, he showed us a necktie – an original worn by Rafi Sb at recordings. Around the room he pointed out to a couple of photographs wherein Rafi is sporting that very necktie. We find out that it is presented to Arun ji by Rafi Sb’s daughter herself, when she visited Delhi and also came to Arun ji’s home. That was the most exhilarating close encounter for me.

And one more thing about Arun ji. He is the convener of the group that is petitioning for the Bharat Ratna award for Rafi Sb.

The most endearing thing about these two gentlemen – very soft spoken, very friendly, extremely humble, and a heart that will share anything you ask of them. True and devoted lovers of music, I must say. And I am fortunate to be in their circle of friends.

Memories of Rafi Sb, shaken and enlivened by these reminiscences.

The song today – although it is a Rafi song, but today’s presentation is not in his own voice. This song, “Badan Pe Sitaare. . .”, originally from the film ‘Prince’ (1969) – Rafi Sb giving playback for Shammi Kapoor, has got repeated in the film ‘Fanney Khan’ from 2018. Yes, so recent. The magic of the golden era lives on and on. This version is sung by Sonu Nigam, and performed on screen by Anil Kapoor.

This song comes to us courtesy of Peevesie’s Mom – the lady is always on the lookout to combine events and anniversaries. Today, 24th is the birth anniversary of Rafi Sb. And it is also the birth anniversary of actor Anil Kapoor. She located this song, and then graciously called me to take it on and present it as part of the ‘repeat songs’ series. Of course, with a short notice (like less than 24 hrs 🙂 ), and a opportunity to combine celebrations that is very difficult to pass. The song had to, has to come today, and today only. Of course, the pleasure of rewards is quite commensurate with the bait proffered. 😀

As I mentioned, the singing voice is Sonu Nigam – a sound that is quite close to Rafi Sb’s singing, as per many opinions. I am retaining the original credits of lyrics and music composition. On screen, we see Anil Kapoor, a part time vocalist in a local orchestral group in the film, attempting a ‘Shammisque’ perfromance. How far successful, I leave it to the readers to judge. For one, Shammi Kapoor would never have a set of dancers around him, in the manner in which the latter day dances are choreographed.

Some other links that come to mind. The dance starts with the rapid shaking of a hand by Anil Kapoor – memories of the dance in the song “Aa Ja Aa Ja, Main Hoon Pyaar Tera” (‘Teesri Manzil’, 1966). Then, we have the initial ‘alaap’ sounds, so to say. The first “lallalllallaaa, la llarrall lallaa lallallaaa” reminds one of the famous Rajesh Khanna performance of “Gulaabi Aankhen Jo Teri Dekhin. . .” (‘The Train’, 1970). Then there is a second piece that goes like “la ra la la la ra la la la ra la la la ra laa” – I am not able to decipher its ‘hear-alike’ source. Then there is the 3rd piece “pappaa pa pappaa pa” – if I am not mistaken, it reminds one of the opening sounds of “Duniya Mein, Logon Ko. . .” (‘Apna Desh’ 1972). Request readers to please add to or comment on these observations.

So a song with many entanglements. Original Rafi Sb song, rendered by a Rafi Sb ‘hear alike’. Original song performed by a Kapoor, now performed by another Kapoor. And the two anniversaries to add to the mix. Quite an interesting addition to the repeat song series. Thanks Peevesie’s Mom ji.

Happy and healthy wishes to Anil Kapoor – goodness, he turns 63 today. Last year he was 62. My, my. 🙂

Hullo to all in Atuldom

I don’t know if anyone has noticed the current obsession that I am displaying. Many of my contributions to the blog in this calendar year have been to celebrate the birthdays of artists who are otherwise called “character artist” or “supporting cast”.

Has anyone tried to visualise what story “The Ramayana” would have been if there was no Dasharatha, Kaikeyi, Sugriva, Hanuman, Vibhishana or even Ravan. Can one think of “The Mahabharat” minus Duryodhana, Shakuni, Kunti, or any of the “supporting characters”? Where would “Sholay” be without Gabbar, or the fate of “Mr. India” without Mogambo. Can one think of “Parichay” minus the cute kids of the family, “Chupke Chupke” without Jijaji, “Golmaal” without Bhavani Shankar; “Deewar” minus THE MAA. That means all stories, be they the epics or modern tales, need characters which are good, bad, ugly or in-between, around the main characters for the story to be interesting.

Thank God Indian movies follow the story-pattern set by the epics and have given us quality actors who don’t mind playing second fiddle to the main characters so-much-so that sometimes their acting out the character overshadows the character of the main lead itself.

Today’s post also celebrates the birthday of one such actor without whose presence Manoj Kumar’s “Shaheed”, “Purab Aur Paschim”, “Upkaar” or “Kranti” cannot be imagined. Rajesh Khanna’s 15 (out of the 19 that they were co-actors in) jubilee hits would be unthinkable and it seems that distributors, back then, backed any movie with this hero-villain Jodi. Similarly, his pairing with Bindu was also much sought after in movies till even in the 90s. This actor was successful for his villainy without gizmos or funny names. And he is one of the many actors whose work has always been appreciated by the audiences; who will be able to survive in the cut-throat competition that Bollywood has. He has played second fiddle to so many of his contemporary villains even after attaining success with ‘Kati Patang’, ‘Upkaar’, ‘Teesri Manzil’ etc.

He was known for his one-liners. For example “main woh bala hoon jo sheeshay se patthar ko todta hai” in Kati Patang; “jinke ghar sheeshe kain ho woh batti bhujakar kapde badalte hain” in Souten; then in the next decade of his career these one-liners went a step further towards enhancing his comic characters with gems like “bhains poonch uthayegi to gaana to nahi gayegi, gobar hi degi” in Aaj Ka Arjun; “kar bhala toh hoga bhala” in Raja Babu and the most charming one-liner of all “nanga nahayega kya aur nichodega kya” in Dulhe Raja. Aah! Now I can see that gleam of excitement in those reading this, and so I will not write his most famous one-liner “Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra” in Bobby

Before I began to write this post, I was hunting for songs with Prem Chopra in them. My logic was mostly all actors start out with the wish to play the main lead. There would be at least a movie or two where Prem Chopra was the HERO and sung some songs to the heroine. And sure enough I found a few but then they are already posted on our blog – “Tum Apni Saheli Ko. . .” (‘Samaaj Ko Badal Daalo’, 1970), “Paanv Mein Painjaniya, Naache Sajaniya. . .” (‘Kunwaari’, 1966), “London Se Aaya Hoon Albela” (‘Vachan’, 1973) & “Aaj Pila De Saaqi Apni Aankhon Ke Paimaane Se” (‘Doli’, 1969). But as a villain also he has sung a song in a train as part of a mission to loot an inspector played by Krishan Dhawan – “Raah Mein Kaliyan Khila ke Yaar” (‘Nafrat’, 1973). Then there are numerous songs where the heroine sings a romantic song to the handsome (many times more good-looking than the hero himself) Prem Chopra in a bid to evoke a response from the hero as in “Kitna Mazaa Aa Raha Hai. . .” (‘Raja Jaani’, 1972). Then there is the song from Sikandar-e-Azam without which no TV or Radio program is complete on the national holidays of Independence Day and Republic Day – “Jahaan Daal Daal Par Soney Ki. . .“. Just that the number of songs lip-synced by Prem Chopra is few. But there are such songs available and he is one of the lucky oldies (today being his 83rd birthday) to be still active in movies and getting to play meaningful characters and also sing once in a while.

He is related to the Kapoor Khandaan as his wife is sister to Krishna Kapoor, wife of Raj Kapoor. By that, he also is brother-in-law of Premnath, Rajendranath etc. His three daughters are married to actors Sharman Joshi, Vikas Bhalla and publicity designer Rahul Nanda- all connected with Bollywood.

About today’s song. I have seen this movie a few years ago on TV (of course) and was happy to see three characters as the protagonists of the movie. ‘Umar’ (2006) was written and directed by Karan Razdan (remember him from the Doordarshan serial ‘Rajani’). It had music by Shamir Tandon and Shaily Shailendra was the lyricist. It starred Kadar Khan, Satish Kaushik, Prem Chopra and Jimmy Shergill in the lead with Shakti Kapoor, Shenaz Treasurywala, Dalip Tahil etc. in supporting cast. It is a story of three old men living the last years of their life in the UK. The three have problems of their own viz. their children ill-treating them, racial discrimination etc. They find solace from an affectionate young man (Jimmy) who is a student and a singer / waiter at a bar. This young man gets embroiled in the murder of his owner and the three elderly men help him run from the law making them fugitives too. But then there were a few songs in that movie which centred around Kadar Khan, Prem Chopra and Satish Kaushik. This was a movie which in Atulji’s words “didn’t try to please all” and so was not very successful at that time possibly what used to be called an “art movie” in the 70s and 80s are now called movies for the “multiplex audience”.

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 11

All right, the occasion demands that I write a post.  It is the tenth anniversary of the blog, ek post to banti hai. 🙂

So like all things transient, whether one is or isn’t the world moves on.  Time and tide wait for none.  I said this to my brother a few days ago.

Is it all make believe ?

What is real here ?

What exactly is happening ?

What are we doing here ?

What is the purpose of all this maya jaal ?

Anyways let me delude all and sundry that any of this matters.

Checking the date of my last post in the blog, I realise it is almost 2 years ago.  I really didn’t mean to deprive the blog of my ramblings for so long, whether it makes sense or not.

As always there is no dearth of bollywood songs.  My search among celebratory songs kept coming back to this one from ‘Hollywood/Bollywood’ (2002).  This movie is Canadian production directed by Deepa Mehta.   This is a light hearted love story, containing just the right dose of drama, songs at regular frequency, with almost black humour, of Dina Pathak mouthing dialogues such as “I am not here to bury Ceaser, but to praise him”. How did they manage not to draw the curtains after this one ? Not an easy task, this editors job. This, in the last 10 minutes of the movie.  No need to say there never was a chance for  anymore goals in the game.

So here is the song, a firm favourite of the last decade. Both the lyricists and music director are new names for the blog. The singing by Sonu Nigam and Alisha Chinoy is very peppy and infectious with a spontaneity which makes this song special.  This also reaffirms my belief that Sonu Nigam is the true disciple and carries the torch for Rafi  Sahab’s singing legacy.

Congatulations on the 10th anniversary of the blog to all involved.  Thanks to Atul ji and Sudhir Sir, it feels good to write about things and nothings.

Most Indians are well aware about Subhash Chandra Bose, who was easily one of the most charismatic and inspirational figures among the Indian freedom fighting leaders of pre independence era.

Hindi movies too have been impressed enough with him and there have been quite a few movies featuring him,viz. “Netaji Subhash”(1947), “Samaadhi”(1950), “Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose”(1966), “Subhash Chandra”(1978) etc.

The latest movie on Netaji has been “Bose-The Forgotten hero”(2004).

Lyrics of a song from this movie were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala to be posted today (23 january 2018) on the occasion of the 121st birth anniversary of Netaji.

That got me interested in watching the movie. I have not watched it fully yet, because the story is too well known and moreover I cannot bear to watch the part when the British realise that Subhash Chandra has escaped. I know that all that happened 77 years ago and what I am watching is just a movie but even today I dread thinking about the treatment meted out by the British to Subhash Chandra Bose’s family members to find his whereabouts. There was nothing Gandhian about how policemen interrogated Subhash Chandra Bose’s relatives.

Fortunately, the song under discussion happens before that. And it involves that part of the movie that appeals me the most. That part has to do with Subhash Chandra Bose’s escape from Calcutta to Gomoh by road and from there he catches a train to Peshawar at midnight.

Subhash Chandra Bose was capable of great meticulousness in making his plans and executing them. And this escape was a shining example of that.

Subhash Chandra Bose was kept in Fort William Jail, Calcutta in december 1940. There he staged a fast unto death strike. Unnerved, the British rulers released him and kept him under house arrest in his residence at 38/2 Elgin Road, Calcutta.

While at his residence, Subhash Chandra Bose pulled off a meticulously planned escape from right under the noses of securitymen.

Subhash Chandra Bose made it known to the world (including Britishers) that he was contemplating sanyas. He retreated into a room in the residence where no one was allowed to see him. His meal would be shoved under the door of the room once a day in a thaali and that thaali would be pushed back after consuming the foodstuff.

Subhash Chandra Bose’s extended family had another residence at 1, Woodburn park. where Subhash’s elder brother Sarat Chandra Bose used to live with his family. Subhash picked Sisir Chandra Bose, the son of Sarat Chandra Bose, for his plan.

The Bose family had several cars, viz Studebaker, Opel, Wanderer W24 etc. Subhash Chandra Bose chose Wanderer 24 W for the purpose.

Prima facie, Wanderer was a noisy car rather than a soundless car as befitting a getaway car But it had advantages over the other cars posssessed by the family. Cars those days did not have efficient cooling arrangements for engine and the radiator was required to be re-filled with water and the car was required to be stopped for cooling while on long distance drive. Wanderer had an advanced cooling system and this car did not suffer from that engine overheating problem during long drives.

Sisir Kumar Das, then a medical student (he went on to become a renowned paediatrician) was made to go on a trial run on 25 december 1940 upto Burdwan ( a distance of 100 km) on this car to check if the car as well as he himself were ready to undertake the long journey.

Every day for several days Sisir would drive to Subhas’s house late at night in his car. When policemen stopped him, he would tell them, “My uncle wants to listen to the radio broadcast about the Second World War. He is too ill to tune the radio himself. So, he depends on me to do it for him. The guards would let him pass. He would leave after midnight. So this routine of leaving in that car after midnight was set up several days in advance.

Bose slipped out of his Calcutta residence after midnight on 1:30 AM on 17 january 1941 on this car, with Sisir Kumar Bose driving as usual and the securitymen did not notice anything unusual.

Sisir Bose drove through the night. He was constantly being served coffee by his uncle who was seated on the left rear side and was carrying a thermos containing coffee. The car arrived Barari near Dhanbad (270 KM), where Ashok Nath Bose, the elder brother of Sisir Bose was posted with “Barari Coke Works” (Now Bharat Central Coalfields Limited) as a chemical Engineer and stayed with his newly married wife Mira. Subhash Chandra Bose, posing as Ziauddin, spent the whole day of 17 January 1941 there. He was supposed to catch 63 UP Howrah-Peshawar train at Asansol, but Ashoknath advised his uncle to board the train at Gomoh. Asansol was an important station and the train arrived there well before midnight so chances of being noticed there were high. Gomoh on the other hand was a smaller station and the train arrived there after midnight, so there would be very few people there and chances of being noticed was low.

Subhash Agreed to this change of plan. Sisir was not famiiar with the road from Barari to Gomoh (50 KM) so Ashoknath and his wife Meera, seated in the rear of the car accompanied Sisir (at the wheel) and Subhash (at the passenger seat) upto Gomoh.

They reached Gomoh railway station at midnight. Subhash asked the others to go back instead of seeing him off at the platform. Sisir insisted on accompanying him to the platform, to see his uncle off. He went to the station, bought the ticket from Gomoh to Peshawar and boarded the train which arrived Gomoh after midnight. Some policemen, rubbing tobacco on their palms were around, while the most sought after revolutionary (though he was not yet known to have escaped) quietly slipped away into the unknown from right under their noses.

Later he reached Peshawar and from there futher plans to escape out of India were chalked out.

The movie does not have scope for many songs, but the song that plays in the background while Subhash’s train runs through the breadth of the nation, hauled by a steam locomotive, is quite evocative and moving. The same song is again played when he is seen going towards the western border of India into Afghanistan.

The song keeps playng in the background at moments like this in parts. The longer and full song is available only in the audio version.

Here is this inspirational and moving song from an inspirational figure from our recent history. The song is sung by Sonu Nigam (hindi part) and Nachiketa Chakraborty (Bangla part), with some chorus singing as well. Jawed Akhtar is the lyricist. Music is composed by A R Rahman.
