Today I present a ‘sensuous-seduction’ song by Asha Bhonsle sung for the movie ‘Gumraah-1976’. As mentioned earlier this movie seems to be an obscure movie of its time but it has now been made available on internet.
Our dear Satyajit jee has mentioned about the story of the movie in brief while presenting a song from this movie on the blog.
This film is a story of young world, of youthful… and Rameshes, Rupalis… and Ashokas and Malas and Mahendras of a whole restless generation that is not irretrievably lost. It can quite easily be guided with love to the right path of discipline and duty from which it seems to have strayed. Principal Guptaji and Professor Vaidya show the way with love and affection whom their ‘LOST’ students overwhelm with loving respect and affectionate regards in return.”
Geet Kosh HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) in its footnote for this movie-page mentions that the movie was titled as “Andhi Jawaani” (presented by ‘Kalabharati’) earlier. Its EP/SP records were also released with this title earlier. The audio link of today’s song mentions the year of this movie as 1973. Satyajit jee has mentioned earlier that this movie is said to be started in 1972, it is clear that this movie was delayed in making.
This movie “Gumraah-1976” was directed by Prem Manik. It was produced by K.P. Sethi. It was passed by Censor Board on 30.10.1976. The cast of this movie included Reena Roy, Subhash Ghai, Danny Denzongpa, Iftekhar and Sheetal. They were supported by Keshto Mukherjee, Jagirdar, Ashoo, Yogesh Chhabra, Ashok Khanna, Monto, Mona, Shefali, Moolchand, Leela Mishra, Arpana Choudhary, Bhalla, Sudesh, Sandeep, Bharat Ashavani, B. Shrivastava, Ganesh, and others. Actor Ranjeet had a special appearance in this movie. And B.B. Bheala, Maruti and Manorama had a friendly appearance in this movie.
Prem Manik who directed this movie was the writer of this movie. Editing of this film was done by I.M. Kunnu. This movie has five songs written by Asad Bhopali and composed to music by Usha Khanna. Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Suman Kalyanpur and Danny had given their voices to the songs in this movie. Two songs from this movie have been presented earlier on the blog and incidentally singer for both the song is Kishore Kumar.
Today I am presenting the third song from this movie in the voice of Asha Bhonsle. The song is picturised on Sheetal is actress Sheetal who plays Mrs Roy in this movie. Shyam (Subhash Ghai) is caught in an unwanted situation and while running on the road he comes in front of the car of Mrs Roy. She put the brakes on time and steps out of the car. From their conversation before the song it seems that in the movie they know each other, but are not fully aware of each other. Mrs Roy takes Shyam to her home and offers him drinks and she also gets drunk. It is in this situation that the song takes place. I have not watched this movie and would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.
Let us listen to this lovely song written by Asad Bhopali and composed by Usha Khanna. The lyrics and composition of this song are very nice and this song deserves to be a better known song, which I guess was lost in time. The video of this song in the movie is a bit longer than the audio of this song.
