Ta’areef uss khuda ki jis ne jahaan banaaya – Non-Film Song (Jagjit & Chitra Singh)

Ismail Meerathhi writes the above “Hamd”. The above is the full Hamd in ghazal format, in devnagari script.
“Tarif us Khuda ki jisne jahan banaya” is a famous Urdu poem (Nazm) by Ismail Merathi (1844-1917), a pivotal figure in modern Urdu literature known for awakening intellect through simple, descriptive verses, particularly for children, focusing on nature, God’s creation, and moral lessons, making this poem a classic praise of the Creator’s artistry in making the world.
Ismail Merathi: The Poet
Who He Was: Born in Meerut (India), Ismail Merathi (real name Muhammad Ismail) was a teacher, writer, and poet.
His Mission: He aimed to uplift the minds of people, especially children, post-1857, moving Urdu poetry from complex themes to simple, realistic, and educational content, emphasizing nature and science.
Style: He introduced the modern Nazm (poem/lyric) form in Urdu, using accessible language to describe the world, making complex ideas understandable.
“Tarif Us Khuda Ki” (Praise Be to God Who Created the World)
Theme: The poem is a beautiful hymn of praise, marveling at God’s creation, from the earth and sky to plants, animals, and the sun.
Story/Meaning: It’s not a narrative story but a descriptive journey through creation.
It starts by praising the Creator of the universe, the earth, and the sky.
It highlights the beauty of flowers, fruits, and the green fields, seeing God’s artistry everywhere.
It notes the provision for life, like rain for the thirsty land, birds, and rivers with fish.
It concludes by acknowledging these countless blessings (Nemat) and the ability to appreciate them.
Impact: This poem became a beloved piece for teaching children about faith, nature, and gratitude, solidifying Merathi’s role as a pioneer in children’s literature and modern Urdu poetry.

This rendition by Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh is part of their Album “Chirag” of 1993. I looked for it and found the rendition a couple of days ago.
It so happened, that there is reputed international school 3 blocks from our apartment building. Nowadays they are conducting winter sports every day in the morning session. Listening to those sounds and drums etc. my husband recollected this nazm at breakfast a couple of days ago. He asked me if I knew it. Obviously, I have always known it. It has always been in the mind, but never really looked for it after school days. He had memory of singing it in school assembly. I was never on-stage during assembly, always reaching last and at the back of the assembly hall. It is amazing how such “bhoole bisre naghme” are there in the consciousness all these decades.
I have made a parody, with the first line:
There was a second line to rhyme from another shair, and it is included in one of the posts here. I cannot find it, so cannot give the whole shair(parody).
So, this was the trigger which brought this Hamd to fore. So better to post it, and save it, or else it will go back to obscurity, where it has been all these decades. This sounds to be a very apt one for school assembly.
Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh are singing it in their usual tune for ghazals. The traditional rendition dhun is a little different. It is a devotional song, nonetheless, rendered as such by both the excellent artists.
