#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
————————————————

“Bhalaa Aadmi-1958” was directed by Bhagwan for Unity Films, Bombay. It had Anita Guha, Chandrashekhar, Bhagwan, Kumkum, Kumar, Protima Devi, Baburao Pahalwan, Shyam Kumar, Leela Gandhi, Ulhas and others.

This obscure movie had ten songs where three lyricists contributed lyrics for this movie. This was also the first movie of Anand Bakshi as a lyrics-writer. Out of the ten songs Saba Afghani wrote three songs, Anand Bakshi wrote five songs and Ehsan Rizvi the third lyrics writer wrote two songs for this movie ‘Bhalaa Aadmi-1968’. The playback singers for this movie included Suman Kalyanpur, Bhooshan, and Sudha Malhotra. But as per information available in Geet Kosh Vol-III (1951-1960) singers’ name for only four songs are mentioned and the singers’ names for six songs are not mentioned, so there is a possibility of more singers singing for this movie. Music for this movie was composed by Nisar.

Here is a detailed information about composer Nisar or Nisar Bazmi which our in-house encylopeadia Shree Arunkumar jee had mentioned while presenting a song from this movie earlier on this blog.

Nisar Bazmi or Syed Nisar Ahmed was born in Naseerabad in Khandesh area of Maharashtra in 1925. His family was very conservative and no one in his family was connected with music in any way but still, Nisar was keen to learn Music. He took training under learned Ustads and soon became popular for singing songs in functions etc. At the age of 14 itself he was employed by All India Radio, where within a year he composed some songs for a Radio play which became Hits, in those days. No wonder a producer was attracted and Nisar was offered a film for music direction. The film was ‘Jamna Paar-1946’.
Slowly he earned name for himself and composed music for 40 films till 1958. Only 27 of these films were completed and released. Unfortunately he always got C grade stunt films and never ever was considered for better films. Some of his films were Jaibkatra, Daghaabaaz Dost, Khoj, Hamari Kismet, Hulla Gulla, Adamkhor, Fighting queen, Bhala Admi etc.

He had composed a very melodious song for film Khoj, which was to be sung by Rafi. Nisar had only 50 rupees to give to Rafi for this song. Rafi, however, liked the song so much that to encourage him gentleman Mohd. Rafi took only ONE Rupee from him as his fees and sang the song! Nisar’s last film in India was” Mr. Toofan” which was released in 1963.
He will be known for giving FIRST opportunity to Lyricist Anand Bakshi in his film, Bhala Aadmi-1958, in which Anand Bakshi wrote 5 out of total 10 songs. Later Anand Bakshi went on to become the most prolific Lyricist of Hindi films, with 600 films and over 4000 songs to his credit. He wrote in 300 films where Laxmikant Pyarelal gave music.( Though, Bakshi himself concedes that Bhala Aadmi-58 was his debut film, another Lyricist Naqsh Lyallpuri pointed out that one song was written by Bakshi in film ‘Silver King-1957’. He should know, because Naqsh was also one of the Lyricists of that film.)
In 1962, Nisar went to Pakistan to look for better prospects. He was offered a film, “Aisa bhi hota hai”, by Fazli brothers-who were very active in India in the pre-partition days. Noor Jehan was to sing in that film. Once Bazmi started working on that film, the news spread all around and at the time of his first recording, many Composers, who were active in India earlier, before partition, like Khwaja Khurshid Anwar, Rasheed Atre, Master Inayat Hussain etc attended the recording session. In his first song itself, he took 19 Retakes with Noorjahan for one song. Noorjahan was very happy, for she was reminded of her India days, when senior composers used to put stress on Rehearsals and retakes for perfection!

Nisar Bazmi-who was merely a C grade composer in India, soon became an A grade composer in Pakistan and gave music in more than 60 films. He won Nigar awards six times, besides citation from Pakistan Government too. In his last few years, he concentrated on learning the whole Holy Quran, as he wanted to become a Hafiz. Nisar Bazmi died in Lahore on 22-3-2007.

Two songs from ‘Bhalaa Aadmi-1958’ have been posted earlier on this blog. Today I am presenting the third song from this movie which is in the voice of Sudha Malhotra. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist.

Only audio of this song is available. This song seems to be a mujraa song. Let us now listen to this song.

Song-Ab chaahe to le le meree jaan (Bhala Aadmi)(1958) Singer-Sudha Malhotra, Lyricist-Anand Bakshi, MD-Nisaar Bazmi

Lyrics

ab chaahe to le le meree jaan
haaye ae
ab chaahe to le le
meree jaan
o sainyyaa bedardee
balmaa bedardee
chaahe to le le meree jaan

lutaa chukee hoon main
apnee har ik adaa tujh par
nisaar dil bhee kiyaa
maine bewafaa tujh par
tu ik nazar to
mohabbat se dekh le mujhko
ab aur tu hee bataa
vaar doon main kyaa tujh par
ab chaahe to le le meree jaan
haaye
ab chaahe to le le meree jaan
o sainyyaa bedardee
balmaa bedardee
chaahe to le le meree jaan

tu hee to phool hai
zaalim meree bahaaron kaa
teree nazar hee
sahaaraa hai besahaaron kaa
mere hee saamne
gairon se aankhen chaar naa kar
idhar bhee soch zaraa
haal gham ke maaron kaa
phir chaahe to le le meree jaan
haaye
phir chaahe to le le meree jaan

bujhe bujhe ye
nazar ke chiraagh jalne de ae ae
do ik kadam to mohabbat mein saath chalne de
mere bhee seene mein
dil hai jigar hai
o o o o zaalim
tadap rahe hain jo armaan
wo nikalne de
phir chaahe to le le meree jaan
haaye
phir chaahe to le le meree jaan
o sainyyaa bedardee
balmaa bedardee
chaahe to le le meree jaan
