Remembering Mohammed Rafi Sahab – 101st Birth Anniversary

“Naghmon ka karwaan” is unleashed with this one name. We the Rafians are not in the mood to yet finish the centenary celebrations. The celebrated artist, the legend is celebrated everyday in various forms, through his songs, through the many fans, ever increasing, with newly exposed people. Though all the songs are 4 decades old, but somehow, they never grow old. The younger generation of new fans is ever increasing, and fan clubs abound in the whole world. The musically aware people, when they become aware of the phenomena called Mohammed Rafi, they are surprised and shocked, that where was he, all this while, how come they did not know of him. Then they come to know, that there lived a playback singer in India, who left for heavenly abode on 31st July 1980. But the songs and voice lives on, in the hearts and in the sound waves of the world.

There are many singers who are from the Rafi school of playback singing. Film music world is very different now, as compared to what it was 40 years ago. But the ‘khala’ left by him is still felt. Musicians are still looking for a complete versatile talent like him.

If the creater created a masterpiece and he knew it, so he broke the mould after creating Rafi Sahab. Clones are many, but the original is only one. AI or no AI. No amount of sound data fed to the AI tools are going to produce the original. There is no replacing it.

I have found one more appealing song, a song recorded in late 60’s or early 70’s. Trivia about the film;

This film was plagued by problems and delayed by many years. The film was launched in the late 1960s or early 1970s, its audio records were issued in 1975, the film was certified in 1979, and it was released in 1984.

There are many more significant, popular songs from 70’s and 80’s which are not posted in the blog yet. Every time I look for one song to post, I invariably find 10s of them. Indeevar has written the lyrics of this song, where some real/actual footage is used recorded during some protests in Mumbai, in the 70’s. Many locations are known. And Dharmendra is doing the singing on screen, no doubt in awe of the dynamo and pace of the song.

I was looking for a Rafi song by Shankar-Jaikishan to include in the Rafi series. And this song was hiding in plain sight, it seems. I never looked beyond the 70’s and this movie was released in 1984.

Rafi sahab’s vocal range, can sing this song with comfort. A feat. Such songs were his “baayen haathh ka khel” in the 60’s.

One song from this movie has been covered in the blog.

Song-Aazaadee aayee bhee to kya (The Gold Medal)(1984) Singer-Mohammad Rafi, Lyricist-Indeewar, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics (Based on full audio link):

Aazaadee aayee bhee to kya aa aa aa
aazaadee aayee bhee to kya
qaayam hain ghulaamee kee rasmein
janta ka jeewan aaj bhee hai
sarmaayadaaron ke bas mein
sarmaayadaaron ke bas mein aen
Aazaadee aayee bhee to kya aa aa aa
aazaadee aayee bhee to kya
qaayam hain ghulaamee kee rasmein
janta ka jeewan aaj bhee hai
sarmaayadaaron ke bas mein
sarmaayadaaron ke bas mein aen

jo ghareeb thhe aur ghareeb huye
jo ameer thhe aur ameer bane
kaala dhan band tijoree mein
phir desh kee kya taqdeer bane
shaahon kee naheen netaa ki Naheen
daulat kee hukoomat aaj bhi hai
insaanon ko jeene ke liye
paison ki zuroorat aaj bhee hai ae
paison ki zuroorat aaj bhee hai ae

woh log jo kapde bunte hain
wohee log yehan adh-nange hain
yeh kaisi sone ki chidiya
pag pag pe jahaan bhikhmange hain
pag pag pe jahaan bhikhmange hain

Aazaadee aayee bhee to kya aa aa aa
aazaadee aayee bhee to kya
qaayam hain ghulaamee kee rasmein
janta ka jeewan aaj bhee hai
sarmaayadaaron ke bas mein
sarmaayadaaron ke bas mein aen

khetee-pesha yeh desh magar
aata hai anaaj videshon se
har gaaon shehar mein aa pahunchaa
bekaaree ke andeshon se ae

godaam mein qaid kiye baithha
koyee kheton ki jawaanee ko
jahaan dhoodh ki nadiyaan behtee thheen
wahaan log taraste paanee ko
wahaan log taraste paanee ko

apna vyopaar badhaane ko
mandir masjid ko ladaate hain
insaan naheen shaitaan hain yeh
anjaanon ko behkaate hain
anjaanon ko behkaate hain

apne mansoobon ke liye
ladte hain ladaayee soobon kee
talwaar banaa kar bhaasha ko
bhaarat ko kaataa karte hain en

nirdhan na baghaawat kar baithhe
iss liye to yeh dhanwaale
qismat kee duhaayee dete hain
taqdeer kee charcha karte hain
taqdeer kee charcha karte hain

khaate hain desh kee roti aur
gaate hain geet videshon ke
inhen laal kahen ke dalaal kahen
yeh maan ko bechaa karte hain
yeh maan ko bechaa karte hain

Aazadee aayee bhee to kya aa aa aa
aazadee aayee bhee to kya
qaayam hain ghulaamee kee rasmein
janta ka jeewan aaj bhee hai
sarmaayadaaron ke bas mein
sarmaayadaaron ke bas mein aen
aazadee aayee bhee to kya aaa aaaa
aazadee aayee bhee to kya aaa aaaa
aazadee aayee bhee to kya aaa aaaa

Thanks for the article. I hope some day an article is written on Mohd Rafi’s most enigmatic and most wanted song ever: YEH LAAJ KA BANDHAN TOD BHI DO.. Only a snippet of this song exists on YouTube. My research has shown that the song is from the movie “Salim Anarkali” (1975) starring Amitabh Bachchan and Priya Rajvansh, music by Madan Mohan and directed by Chetand Anand. The movie was not released due to Madan Mohan’s death.

There are many such snippets available on YouTube. May be some experts on Madan mohan can put some light on this.

I know of one Telugu film “Akbar, Salim, Anarkali” (1975) mentioned in the excel sheet of Rafi songs, but the music director there is Salil Chaudhary.

Thank you for reading the post.

There is more I need to mention about this song. It is recorded most likely in late 60’s/ early 70’s. It’s truly surprising that it has remained unknown all these decades. Never heard on radio, despite being a Shankar – Jaikishan creation. As for the composition or quality of the song, it is on par with many classic famous songs by Rafi sahab, in this genre. I am comparing this with “zindabad zindabad Ae muhabbat zindabad” and “apni azadi ko ham hargiz mita sakte nahin”. I just stated the conclusion, that this type of song is “baayen haath ka khel” for RAFI sahab.

Some of the heavy words in the lyrics :

Sarmayadar – wealthy, capitalist

Mansooba – Project or Program

Sooba – a state or province

Mansooba is not to be confused with “mansoob” (not in the song). Mansoob means related /connected, or even intended/engaged(fiance/fiancee).
