6368 Post No. : 19750

After covering songs released in 1900s (mostly from 1960s to 1980s), this becomes my first post covering a song released in the current millenium that started from 2000.

Many HF music lovers consider the golden era of HFM as finished in 1970. For me personally, it stopped in 1980. Not that post 1980 there was not good music but it was too few and far between. So if till the 70s decade, every year 7 or 8 movies out of 10 had good music, then it fell down to 4-5 out of 10 in 80s and 2-3 out of 10 during the 90. But post 2000 it became 2-3 out of every 25 movies released. These are entirely my figures from my gut feeling, I don’t attribute them to any study or report. Therefore, you have been seeing my posts from primarily the 60s to the 80s decades.

Some brilliant composers started their journey during the 80s and 90s decades. Some of whom I really admire are Keervani (M M Kreem), Anu Malik, Illayaraja, A R Rehman, Jatin Lalit, Vishal Bharadwaj and Pritam Chakraborty.

Talking about today’s song, it’s created by Vishal Bhardwaj who is widely considered one of India’s most versatile musical minds because he approaches music as a storyteller rather than just a composer. His work is defined by a unique blend of literary depth, folk influences, and a cinematic sensibility that often bridges the gap between traditional Indian sounds and global styles.

Bhardwaj’s music is deeply intertwined with literature. Having grown up in a household of poets, his compositions often treat lyrics with the reverence of a Nazm (a genre of Urdu poetry). His long-standing partnership with the legendary lyricist Gulzar is central to this; Bhardwaj is known for being one of the few composers who can find the perfect musical notes for Gulzar’s often complex and “newsy” free verse.

For him, music is a tool for narration. He famously stated that he only began directing films to create more opportunities to compose the kind of music he wanted.

He often uses melodies he composed years prior when the right story finally demands them. For example, the tune for “Jhelum” from Haider (2014) was actually composed in 1985 after the passing of his father.

His music often evokes the physical setting of the film. Songs like “Chappa Chappa” and “Chhod Aaye Hum” from Maachis use harmonies that evoke the feeling of being in the mountains.

Bhardwaj has a “passion for experimenting with folk music,” often reinterpreting traditional sounds for a modern audience.

He utilized UP (Uttar Pradesh) dialects and rhythms for Omkara (e.g., “Beedi”) and Kashmiri-Sufi influences for Haider (e.g., “Bismil”).

He has integrated Russian folk elements into 7 Khoon Maaf (“Darling”) and moved toward a more global, modern sound in soundtracks like Kaminey.

Unlike some of his contemporaries who use “busy” or layered electronic soundscapes, Bhardwaj’s music is often characterized by:

A significant part of his musical identity is the voice of his wife, Rekha Bhardwaj. Her earthy, unconventional voice has become the signature sound for many of his most iconic and gritty tracks, such as those in Omkara, 7 Khoon Maaf, and Ishqiya.

This then becomes my first article released post year 2000. I hope you enjoy the song.

“Nainon Ki Mat Maaniyo Re” sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is written by Gulzar and composed by Vishal Bharadwaj. The song is from the 2006 movie “Omkara”.

‘Omkara’ (2006) was produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. It starred Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Konkana Sen Sharma, Vivek Oberoi, Bipasha Basu (special appearance), Naseeruddin Shah, Deepak Dobriyal, Pankaj Tripathi, Kamal Tiwari etc.

One song “Beedi Jalaile” has already been posted by Sadanand Ji, who has written a very detailed post about the background and the story of the film. This is the second song of the movie to be posted here.

“Omkara” is one of the acclaimed trio of movies, adaptation of Shakespeare’s dramas, made by Vishal Bharadwaj. “Omkara” was based on “Othello”, its credits said as much.

The other two are “Maqbool” and “Hyder”. Indianised stories made for us, the urdu /hindi audiences, for whom the Victorian Drama/Opera are incomprehensible.

Like you said, the songs are very much part of story narration for Vishal Bharadwaj. I thought Kareena Kapoor’s was the central character in the story of full of strong male characters. Once seen, never to be forgotten type of story/treatment.

Thank you for your comment Nahm Ji. Yes Kareena’s was the central character and looked beautiful. She stood her ground with a great performance in even when pitted against talented actors and actresses like Ajay, Saif, Konkona, Naseeruddin, Vivek, Deepak and a host of others.
