(Music Composer R.D. Burman’s Remembrance Anniversary)
——————————————————————

Today 4th January’2026 is the 33rd Remembrance Anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman fondly known as Pancham.

Rahul Dev Burman was born on 27th June 1939 and he passed away on 4th January 1994 at the age of just 54.

On this occasion we are presenting songs composed by Pancham that had not been covered before. In this post we cover a song from the 1987 movie ‘Itihaas’, which is a lesser known movie that has been forgotten with time.

‘Itihaas-1987’ was an unsuccessful movie in terms of box-office success. It was directed by V. Joshi for ‘Navjeevan Productions Pvt. Ltd., Bombay’. Tito was the producer of this movie which was passed by Censor Board on 30.01.1987. Sources mention that this movie was a remake of director V. Joshi’s own movie ‘Itihasam-1981’ in Malayalam and remade in Tamil as ‘Theerpu’ in the year ‘1982’.

The cast of the Hindi movie ‘Itihaas-1987’ had Raaj Kumar, Shabana Azmi, Rati Agnihotri, Anil Kapoor, Mohnish Behl, Danny Denzongpa, Suresh Oberoi, Nameeta Chandra, Dinesh Hingoo, Master Suresh, Hanifa, Ramesh Goel, Prema Narayan, Leena Das, Iftekhar, Jalal Agha, Raj Mehra and others. Screenplay of this movie was written by Gyandev Agnihotri, and its dialogues were written by Krishan Dehlvi. N.S. Bedi was the dialogue director for this movie. Waman Bhonsle & Gurudutt Shirali was the editors of this movie.

Anand Bakshi wrote six songs for this movie which had music composed by Rahul Dev Burman. Asha Bhonsle, Anwar, Yesudas, Chandrashekhar Gadgil, and Kavita Krishnamurty were the playback singers for the songs in this movie.

In the year 1987 R.D. Burman had composed music for nine movies. Their details as well as their status on this blog are given below :-

This song is a romantic song picturised on Raaj Kumar and Shabana Azmi. This song appears on the screen when titles of the movie appear on the screen. Yesudas and Kavita Krishnamurty are the singers.

Singer Yesudas had sung only two songs under the baton of Rahul Dev Burman. One song from the movie ‘Alag Alag-1985’ has already been covered. With this song, all Yesudas songs sung under the music director of Panchamgets covered on this blog.

The audio version of the song is of longer duration while the video has two stanzas less than the audio. I have not watched this movie so can’t say if the song gets played in two parts in the movie or so. However this composition is a nice composition which grows upon the listener repeated listening.

Let us now listen and enjoy this wonderful Pancham composition…

Lyrics

dost
aye mere dost
mere hamdam
mere dam-saaz
mere hamraaz

aao tumhen pyaar karein
kuchh nayee baat karein
aao tumhen pyaar karein
kuchh nayee baat karein
ke tumhen choom lene ko
jee chaahtaa hai ae ae
aao tumhen pyaar karein
kuchh nayee baat karein
ke tumhen choom lene ko
jee chaahtaa hai ae ae
aao tumhen pyaar karein
kuchh nayee baat karein

thhaamein daaman kabhee
to hat jaatee ho
tum to dhadkan se bhee
dar jaatee ho
aur karein aarzoo
to simat jaatee ho
aao kuchh baat karein
aao kuchh dil kee sunen
in baahon ko machal
jaane do o o o
aao tumhen pyaar karein
kuchh nayee baat karein

teree aankhon kee kasam
is jawaanee kee kasam
kaalee zulfon kee kasam
badlee ghataaon ki kasam
mere seene mein sulagtey
armaanon kee kasam
ke tumhen choom lene ko
jee chaahtaa hai
aao tumhen pyaar karein aen
kuchh nayee baat karein

ae meree gunchaa-dahan
ae meree seemeen-badan
bol kuchh ke mehak
jaise phoot pade ae
dil e deewaanaa meraa
honththh tere choom sake
doodhiya subah se
ujaalaa phoot sake
aao tumhen pyaar karein
kuchh nayee baat karein
ke tumhen choom lene ko
jee chaahtaa hai ae ae
aao tumhen pyaar karein
kuchh nayee baat karein

phoolon ko samete
teree raahon mein
tu agar bhaagya se
mil jaaye mujhe
to sajdon ke bahaane
tere kadmon par
pyaar ke apne
itihaas kee geetaa rakhh doon
aao tumhen pyaar karein
kuchh nayee baat karein
ke tumhen choom lene ko
jee chaahtaa hai ae
aao tumhen pyaar karein
kuchh nayee baat karein

dost
ae mere dost
mere hamdam
mere dam-saaz
mere hamraaz
