Hullo Atuldom
Back after a year of inactivity. My last post was on 27th December 2025. Since then the calendar has changed and we are into 2026- a New Year. Even if the gap has been of only a few days, it feels like I have been away forever- feels like an Year of Inactivity. 🙂
“Inspector” (1956) was a film that had 9 songs with the song ‘dil chhed koi aisa naghma’ having two versions – in Hemant Kumar’s & Lata Mangeshkar’s voices. The following songs of the film are present on the blog:-

As can be seen from the above, we have forgotten to take this film towards Yiippeehood. I landed on the film as I was looking for songs from films made by Shakti Samanta to remember him today, on what would have been his 100th birthday.
Shakti Samanta was born on this date in 1926 in Burdwan which was in the erstwhile Bengal Presidency of British India. He had his basic education in Dehradun & graduation in Calcutta. After completing his education he wanted to become an actor in the Hindi film industry at Bombay, so he moved closer to the city. He took a school teacher’s job in Dapoli, about 200 kilometres from Mumbai.
Shakti Samanta actually wanted to be a playback singer in the beginning. Around 1947, he went to S.D. Burman for an audition. After listening to him Burman told him that he could give him a role in a chorus song, but not in a solo song. So he shifted his energies elsewhere. He eventually joined the film industry in 1948 as an assistant director starting with Satish Nigam in Raj Kapoor starrer ‘Sunhere Din’, subsequently he worked with directors like Gyan Mukherjee and Phani Majumdar at Bombay Talkies in ‘Tamasha’, ‘Baadbaan’ and ‘Dhobi Doctor’. Eventually he got his break as an independent director when he directed his first feature film, ‘Bahu’ in 1954, starring Karan Dewan, Usha Kiron, Shashikala and Pran. The songs of that film were composed by Hemant Kumar. It had 9 songs, all of which are on the blog. That is why I zeroed in on “Inspector” which was Shaktida’s second directorial.
1957 saw Shaktida launch his own banner- Shakti Film’s that has given us movies with blockbuster stories & music. Beginning with ‘Howrah Bridge’ The banner has entertained film viewing public with a whopping 32 Hindi films (I have excluded those that were not under the Shakti FIlms banner). He has also been associated with 6 Bengali films. The films under this banner have touched all possible genres – action, drama, emotion, comedy etc. Shakti Samanta is credited for starting the trend of making double version films- in Hindi and Bengali- with ‘Amanush’ in 1974, and also made the first co-produced film between India and Bangladesh in 1984.
Shakti Samanta received Filmfare Awards for “Best Film” for ‘Aradhana’, ‘Anuraag’ and ‘Amanush’. He was President of the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association for 7 years, Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for 7 years and was Chairman of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata for 2 years.

The film “Inspector” was produced by A.K. Nadiadwala, lyrics were by S.H. Bihari & Hemant Kumar was the music director. The songs of the film were in the voices of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle & Hemant Kumar himself. The film had Ashok Kumar & Geeta Bali in the lead with K.N. Singh, Pran, Mehmood, Achala Sachdev, Nasir Hussain, Maruti Rao (Guddi Maruti’s father), Pratima Devi etc. in supporting roles. The film was categorised as an action film, with Ashok Kumar playing the inspector.
Here is the song from the film in the voice of Asha Bhosle. Unfortunately, I cannot recognise the female dancer who is performing difficult steps of Manipuri Nritya with ease. We can see Nazeer Hussain, with Achala Sachdev & Pratima Devi in the audience.

Just a guess, since the title cards shows Roshan Kumari ‘s name, whether the main dancer is famous classical dancer Roshan Kumari ?,
I may be wrong in this, if I am wrong, please someone knowledgeable regard this correct me…..
