‘Trip To Moon/Chaand Par Chadhaaee’ (1967) was produced and directed by T P Sundaram under the banner of Cauvery Productions (Madras). The cast included Dara Singh, G Ratna, Master Bhagwan, Anwar Hussain, Padma Khanna, Kanchanmala, Helen, S Nazir, Rajrani, Saudagar Singh, Trilok Singh, Suryavir Singh, Hardeet Singh etc. The film belongs to the genre of the science fiction coupled with stunts and actions. This was the only Hindi film of the lead actress, G Ratna (also written as G Rathna) who has acted in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada films during 1960-80. Master Bhagwan had a double role in the film – both as sidekicks of the lead actor, Dara Singh and the villain, Anwar Hussain.

Probably, this was the first Hindi film to visualise the trip to moon even before the spacecraft, Apollo-11 with Neil Armstrong landed on the moon for the first time in July 1969. The film was a fictional journey of two Indians to the moon during which the astronauts encounter aliens, monsters, robots etc. The elaborate sets and special effects used in the film, though now may appear amateurish, were novelties in 1960s. The film also used devices which are now identified with video calls, viewing images just like presently in Google Glass, printers, scanners, digital camera, electronic mail etc which have become realities in the 21st century. Some parts of film seems to have been inspired from the Hollywood film, ‘The Forbidden Planet’ (1956).

Despite being a science-fiction, the film is more of a comedic adventure rather than a serious space exploration. The film’s story revolves around the usual fares of most stunt/action/costume Hindi films. The difference is that the romance, dances, stunts and fights etc are taking place not on earth but on the Moon and Mars.

The story of the film is as under:

A research scientist (S Nazir) who has set up a secret research centre in a camp is abducted by an alien lady (Padma Khanna) in a filmy style luring him towards her by singing a song. He is taken in a spacecraft and his whereabouts is not known. Captain Anand (Dara Singh) is selected to take his spacecraft to the moon to find the research scientist. He is accompanied by his sidekick, Bhagu (Bhagwan). While proceeding towards spacecraft, they find that some aliens from the moon are trying to sabotage the spacecraft. Anand and Bhagu fight with the aliens but they are taken as prisoners by aliens and taken in the spacecraft to the Moon.

There is some rivalry going on between Barahatu (Anwar Hussain), the chief of Mars and the chief of the Moon because Barahatu wants to marry princess Shimoga (G Ratna) of the Moon. But Shimoga is not interested. Barahatu fires missiles towards the spacecraft in which Anand and Bhagu are travelling as the prisoners to the Moon. However, spacecraft dodges the missiles and safely lands on the Moon. After adjusting their movements on the moon’s surface thanks to the ‘magical sole’ attached to their shoes, Anand and Bhagu walk normally on the moon’s surface and are lodged in a prison.

Shimoga visits the prison and seeks the cooperation of Anand and Bhagu for some help which she would reveal later. However, Anand flatly refuses to cooperate with her. As a punishment, Anand is sentenced to fight the gorilla followed by dragging by the horses. Anand wins on both the counts of punishment which impresses Shimoga. Things become complicated when Shimoga falls in love with Anand which is in detrimental to the interest of Barahatu who wants to marry her. This leads to an intense rivalry between the people of the Moon and Mars.

Chief of Mars, Barahatu has a scheming spy, Simi (Padma Khanna) on the Moon who also loves Anand. For her to realise her dream of having Anand for herself, she must work towards bringing Shimoga to Barahatu. On the other hand, Anand and Shimoga have fallen in love with each other. The only stumbling block is that Shimoga wants Anand to stay with her on the Moon while Anand wants her to accompany him to the Earth. Shimoga agrees to Anand’s wish and tells him that she will come with him after her birthday celebrations. Simi informs Barahatu what seems to be through the video conferencing that Shimoga has agreed to go with Anand to the Earth. This is not a good news for both Simi and Barahatu.

On the birthday celebrations when Shimoga is performing the ‘space dance’, Barahatu kidnaps her and takes in his spacecraft to the Mars. Despite a lot of persuasion, Barahatu is not able to win the love of Shimoga. He gives her some more time after which he would have her by force. On the Moon, Simi captures Anand by deceit and informs Barahatu who sends the spacecraft to bring him to the Mars. But before that Anand disappears with Bhagu in an undisclosed location.

To get the whereabouts of Anand, Simi hatches a plan by which Anand will have to appear before Barahatu. She visits the Earth and meets Anand’s mother (Rajrani) with a message that Anand is eager to see her and wants her to come to the Moon. Anand’s mother happily accompanies Simi to the spacecraft and reaches the Mars where she get arrested and put in prison. Bhagu and Palki (Kanchanmala) decide to visit the Mars to see the well-being of Shimoga. There is not much difficulty for Bhagu to roam the palace of Barahatu as whoever sees him, they think that he is Isabel (Bhagwan), the sidekick of Barahatu who resembles Bhagu. Anand gets message from Bhagu that not only Shimoga but his mother and sister are also imprisoned on the Mars. Anand decides to travel to Mars.

A space war takes place on the Mars during which Anand and Bhagu face Barahatu’s soldiers. They fight and wrestle and overpowr them. Barahuta uses missiles, rockets, monsters and robots during the war. Anand and Bhagu successfully repulse all the forms of attack and finally kills Barahatu from his own space weapon. Anand, his mother, his sister and Shimoga are united. So is Bhagu united with Palki.

The film had six songs written by S H Bihari, Asad Bhopali and Imam. However the attribution to individual song is not available. The songs were set to music by Usha Khanna. All the songs in the film are melodious. One song has been represented on the Blog. I present the 2nd song, ‘aa ham chale aasmaan se bhee aage’ rendered by Lata Mangeshkar and lip synced by G. Ratna. The song is picturised as a ‘space dance’ mostly with hand gestures. Among the watchers are Dara Singh, Bhagwan and Kanchanmala.

The background vocalisation chorus of wordless syllables like ‘ha ha ha’ and ‘la la la’ in the song reminds me of such vocalisation used by Salil Choudhary in the song ae dil kahaan teri manzil in the film, ‘Maaya’ (1961). Such vocalisation is generally used to create an atmospheric feelings and for the song under discussion, it is for creating feelings of joy and optimism on the occasion of the birthday of Shimoga (Ratna)during which she performs a ‘space dance’ with other dancers.

The context of the song is that Shimoga (Ratna) is in love with Anand (Dara Singh) who has also started liking her. But Anand wants to return to earth which Shimoga is resisting. After some persuasion, Shimoga agrees to accompany Anand to the earth. This is a joyous occasion coupled with her birthday celebrations. This news goes to Barahatu (Anwar Hussain) who wants to marry her. Towards the end of the song, one can see Anwar Hussain in readiness to abduct G Ratna while she is celebrating her birthday with ‘space dance’.
