Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part XXXVII: Year 1983

In this episode, we discuss Lata Mangeshkar songs that she sang in Hindi movies released in 1983.

In 1983, 130 Hindi movies containing 676 songs were released. Lata Mangeshkar got to sing in 33 of these movies and she sang 73 songs in these movies. So Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was heard in 25.4 % of the movies released in 1983. Her voice was heard in 10.3 % of the songs appearing in the movies of 1983.

Lata Mangeshkar worked with 11 music directors and 18 lyricists in these 33 movies released in 1983. Laxmikant Pyarelal continued to be the most prolific music directors with Lata, with 590 songs in HFM with Lata Mangeshkar by the end of 1983. Shankar Jaikishan with 456 songs in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar were in the second position. Kalyanji Anandji were third with 301 songs. R D Burman with 275 songs overtook C Ramchandra with 274 songs. Other top music directors for Lata Mangeshkar were Chitragupta (239), Madan Mohan (195), S D Burman (179), Roshan (144), Naushad (140), Hemant Kumar (127), Anil Biswas (120), Husnlal Bhagatram (108), Salil Chaudhary (108) and Vasant Desai (104). Together these fifteen music directors composed 3360 songs out of 4655 songs that Lata Mangeshkar had sung in Hindi movies till end of 1983. Anand Bakshi with 587 songs was the top lyricist with Lata Mangeshkar. Other leading lyricists with Lata Mangeshkar were Rajinder Krishan (554), Majrooh Sultanpuri (399), Shailendra (361), Hasrat Jaipuri (297), Prem Dhawan (201), Bharat Vyas (193), Shakeel Badayuni (189), Sahir Ludhianvi (161) and Indeewar (118). These ten lyricists had penned 3060 songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar till that time.

Lata Mangeshkar collaborated with music directors Chaand Pardesi and Uttam Jagdish for the first time in movies of this year. She also worked with Lyricists Pradeep Kaushik, Sawan Kumar Tak, Sameer, Rana Sahri and Qateel Shifaifor the first time in movies released this year.

Here I have assumed that Chaand Pardesi was different from music director Pardesi with whom Lata mangeshkar had worked in the past. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this matter.

“Aan Aur Shaan”(1983) was produced by Mohan Barodia and directed by Ravi Tandon for Elephanta Films, Bombay. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Dara Singh, Rishi Kapoor, Moushumi Chatterjee, Nirupa Roy, Farida Jalal, Ravinder Kapoor, Janki Dass, Jeevan, Ranjeet, Harish Magan, Master Ravi, Maan Singh, Pardesi, Prem, Uttam Sodi, Chandu, Joher Sen, Narendra Jaiswal etc with guest appearances by Aruna Irani, Jayashree.T., Satyen Kappu, O.P.Goyle and Putul Guha.

OK, so finally ‘Anmol Ghadi’ got yippeee’d this week, on the very first day of the week. And Atul ji, still waiting for you to clear the mystery behind this yippeee.

Once again, a very prolific week, the pace of post updates continues in full swing. Except that one day this week, we scored only a single. But for the rest of the week, it was all sixes with one extra run from an overthrow.

The blog scored 38 posts this week. Of these 38, we had only one guest post for the week – by Santosh Ojha ji. A total of 36 films made their appearance, with two films scoring two appearances each. We had 1 film that reached yippeee status. A whopping 15 films made their debut this week. That is close to almost half the films that got featured that week.  Since that week was done with, of the 36 films featured, 26 films have been formally and fully yippeee’d. Ten of them are still awaiting their numbers to be fully showcased. Given below is the detailed chart for the week. You will notice a new column and new notations today. I will explain them later in this write up.

You may notice that I used the phrase ‘formally and fully’ to qualify the yippeee status of the films. The reason I used this phrase is the following. As we are making progress towards our ideal of bringing on board all the Hindi film songs, we do find ourselves against certain difficult limitations. These have to do with – one, non availability of certain songs, and two, erroneous or missing information about some films and songs. I will highlight these situations as we progressively face them. For this week, here are the difficult situations that I came across.

The first one is the film ‘Mukhdaa’ from 1951. This film debuted on our blog on 16th Sep ten years back. The film has 11 songs, as per the Geet Kosh listings. We have located and posted 9 of them over the past decade. The remaining two are practically untraceable. Firstly, of the 11 songs listed, one was never put on a gramophone record, as the producers planned for and contracted with HMV for only 5 discs, which means 10 songs in all. The song at serial no. 6 – “Dekho Jee Pehli Baar, Kiya Hai Tumse Pyaar” was never released on a gramophone record. Then comes a footnote in the Geet Kosh which states that one record, N36900 was ordered, but then cancelled later on. It never got published, although the songs were recorded. This record was supposed to carry the two songs at serial no. 3 – “Mehlon Ke Rehne Waale Mehlon Mein Hans Rahe Hain” and serial no. 7 – “Poochhiye Na Haal Jee, Palle Nahin Maal Jee”. So that would mean that we should have 3 missing songs and not 2.

But wait, here is one more interesting twist in the story. It seems that after cancelling the publication of the record N36900, the producers went ahead and commissioned one more record, with number N50008. Looking at the huge gap in the series number of the records, it is clear that the latter record (N50008) was ordered much later than 1951. Strangely, this newly ordered record now carried the song at serial no. 7 – “Poochhiye Na Haal. . .” and the song at serial no. 10 – “Jaa Teri Meri, Meri Teri”. This latter song at serial no. 10 was already published and is available as one side of the record with number N36870, the flip side of which carries the song at serial no. 5 – “Neele Se Dupatte Pe Hain Peeli Peeli Dhaariyaan”. The net outcome of these, what I shall call – confusing decisions – is that the song at serial no. 10 – “Jaa Teri Meri. . .” is now available on two distinct published gramophone records for this film. And the song at serial no. 3 – “Mehlon Ke Rehne Waale. . .” has got lost, probably forever. The saving grace is that the song at serial no. 7 – “Poochhiye Na Haal Jee. . .” is now available. It might also have been lost forever, but for this confusing set of decisions, which saved this song for posterity. And so the songs at serial no. 6 (this one not planned at all for release on gramophone record) and the song at serial no. 3 (unpublished due to cancellation of one gramophone record), are likely never going to surface. They may still be existing on some original spool tapes from the original recordings, and/or they may be on the soundtrack of the film. However, since both these items are not yet available in public domain, and with very little likelhood that they will make an appearance in the future, we could label them as LFe (Lost Forever). That does leave us two songs short of ever declaring this film as yippeee’d.

Coming to the second similar instance, also from this week. The film is ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ from 1962. It had made its debut on our blog on 23rd Dec, 2008. The seventh song of this film was posted on 24th Sep, 2011. Geet Kosh lists 8 songs for this film. The missing song is the one at serial no. 5 – “Sahil Ki Taraf Kashti Le Chal, Toofaan Ke Thapede Sehna Kya”. As per the listing, this song was recorded in the voice of Hemant Kumar. This song never got published on a gramophone record. Now eight total songs will completely fit on 4 gramophone discs. But the producer seems to have taken a decision to completely omit this song. In fact, the song at serial no. 6 – “Bhanwra Bada Naadaan Haaye”, makes appearance on two gramophone discs nos. N54036 and N54038, while the above mentioned song in Hemant Kumar’s voice has been completely axed from any publication. It does not exist in the film. The film information booklet lists this song, and that is just about it. Here is one more case where a song qualifies to be labeled as LFe. And that also leaves the film ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ one song short of being declared as yippeee’d.

Based on the above discussed circumstances, these two films will never reach the Yippeee status. So I have a proposal here to address this situation. In the face of such stern circumstances, I propose that we introduce a Yippeee variant status – ‘Conditional Yippeee’ – to be indicated as ‘Yc’ in our charts and tables. In such cases, when we come to the conclusion that it is (almost) impossible that one or more songs of a certain film will ever be traced, we may declare that film to be Conditinally Yippeee’d, once all the possibly available songs are accounted for on our blog. The proposal is presented for consideration of the team, and I would request other members to please present their views and comments. In the table above of the week’s status ten years ago, I am provisionally marking these two films as ‘Yc’, pending agreement by the team,

This week we have one more case of a partial missing song in a multi part / multi version scenario. In the case of the film ‘Chaand Mere Aaja’ from 1957. The main theme song of the film – “Chaand Ko Dekho Ji” / “Chaand Mere Aa Ja Re” – has one additional part, identified as the sad version. Details of this part are provided by dear Prakash ji, including the additional lyrics. Just that we as editors have not yet gotten around to update the post itself. In fact, the HFGK listing shows 7 songs, which include this sad version of the song. This sad version of the song is not released on gramophone discs, and is available only from the film itself. My effort is to get this post updated within a day, and be able to change the pending status of this film from ‘0.5’ to ‘0’. And by the way, the Geet Kosh listing has one incomplete information relating to this song. It lists Lata Mangeshkar as the singer of this part. However, as we view the video, we find that this part is in the voices of both Rafi Sb and Lata ji.

Let me come to the song for today. This discussion on errors and limitations has become quite long. I also wanted to write about the film ‘Doctor’ of 1941 and the related info error in the Geet Kosh. I encountered this error the previous week. But I will write about it in the next episode of this series.

‘Hercules’ of 1964, has quite a dubious distinction to note. The first song, the debut of this film, came on board on 18th September, 2010. Today, I bring on board the second song of this film. Interesting that this film has been in hibernation for a full decade, despite the fact that there are some wonderful songs pending for this film. As is evidenced by the song in this post – a Helen dance song in a royal darbaar setting. The words come from the pen of Anand Bakshi, the music is from the mind of N Datta and the singing voice is Asha Bhosle. On screen we see Dara Singh, as Hercules, in chains, possibly being prepared for execution. Other actors we see in this not so clear a video clip, are Nishi, BM Vyas, Maruti Rao, Leela Misra, P Kailash and Indira Billi.

Helen’s performance is her usual self – so wonderfully elegant and graceful, even as she gives a sensuous performance. The ease with which she is coordinating the dance movements, the lip syncing, the facial expressions et al – she is a master class all by herself.

One can see that “Prem Nagar”(1940) and “Sikandar e Azam”(1965) are the only two movies from that day which still have a few songs left to be covered. “Prem Nagar”(1940) balance songs are not available, so that leaves us with “Sikandar e Azam”(1965) as the only movie eligible for the “Blg Ten Year Challenge” today ten years later on 5 september 2020.

In the mission of covering ‘movies with same title’ on the blog, today’s song introduces ‘Har Har Mahadev-1974’, which is making its debut on the blog today with this song. We already have a movie ‘Har Har Mahadev’ of the year ‘1950’ on the blog.

‘Har Har Mahadev-1974’ a ‘mythological movie’ was directed by Chandrakant for ‘Joy Films’. Chandrakant was also the producer of this movie. It had Dara Singh, Jayshree Gadkar, Padma Khanna, Uma, Aruna Irani, Sujata, Gopi Kishan, Satyajeet, Abhi Bhattacharya, Randhawa, Shahu Modak, Asit Sen, Babu Raje, Arvind Pandya, Azad, Master Tito, Suryakumar, Ratnamala, Himmat Singh Chauhan, Dilip Dutt, Vishwas Kunthe, Hercules, Polsan, Moolchand, Rajrani, Saudagar Singh, Jagdish Raj, V.Gopal, Pal Sharma, Radheshyam, Rinku, Narmada Shankar, Anil Kumar, Dhanraj Pehalwan, Minal Mehta, Uma Khosla, Manjiri Desai, Devyani Thakkar, Sarita Devi, Shri Bhagwan, Sitaram, Shery, Kedar Saigal, Thakur G.S. and others. Sumitra Devi made a special appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by Pragji Dosa and dialogues were written by Ramesh Pande. Editing of this movie was done by Ram Khade and Vithoba Surve.

This movie had as many as seven songs in it written by Kavi Pradeep and music composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. Singers Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor, Aziz Nazan and Kanchan had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by censor board on 22.08.1974.

Dara Singh played the role of Mahadev in this movie. Today 12th July 2020 is the eighth remembrance anniversary (19.11.1928- 12.07.2012) of this most loved personality of Indian Cinema.

He is mostly remembered and loved for the mythological character of ‘Hanuman’, he also played Bhagwan Shiv in some of the movies viz. ‘Tulsi Vivaah-1971’, ‘Hari Darshan-1972’, and ‘Har Har Mahadev-1974’ (as per information available on ‘wiki’).

Remembering him today on his Remembrance Day and paying our tributes to him with this song picturised on him where he as Mahadev is seen in his ‘dhyan mudra’ while Jayshree Gadkar as devi Parvati is also seen.

This song a ‘shiv stuti bhajan’ is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and on screen it is lip sync by Babu Raje (playing ‘Narad muni’ here) and another actor whom I am unable to identify. There are many other artists who are performing in this wonderful song.

Let us now enjoy this song written by Kavi Pradeep ji in this auspicious month of ‘shraavan’ which is already in progression in some parts of the country and about to begin in next week in other parts of the country.

With this song ‘Har Har Mahadev-1974’ makes its debut on the blog.

As Gajendra ji had commented, couple of episodes ago – I am quite sure the readers are now beyond getting surprised by the songs posted in this series. Yes, some very interesting repeats, but oh well. . .

The interesting thing about today’s post is, well, two things. It is the singer’s Remembrance Day today, as well as, we also are showcasing the song as part of the 10 year challenge series.

10 years ago, this day, six songs were posted. Those were the days, when Atul ji was at his prolific best, and six new songs on the blog was quite the norm. And he followed an interesting convention. The songs he posted on one day, used to be in the incremental chronological order, as you can notice in the short table below.

There were two debut films that day – ‘Jai Chittod’ and ‘Haseenon Ka Devta’. And quite interestingly, both the films are at present miles away from being yippeee’d. Since that day, only one song has been added for ‘Jai Chittod’ (12 songs listed in Geet Kosh), and none for ‘Haseenon Ka Devta’ (6 songs listed in Geet Kosh). The remaining 4 films, ‘Bandi’ (1957), ‘Blackmail’ (1973), ‘Badnaam’ (1975) and ‘Mera Naam Joker’, the magnum opus by Raj Kapoor, have completed their account on the blog.

And yet, today, “Mera Naam Joker’ makes another appearance here, on account of an unlisted song. In that, it is a repeat song from RK’s own film from 1951 – ‘Awaara’. Being his own film, of course it would have been a simple thing to reuse the earlier song.

In the iconic song “Ae Bhai Zara Dekh Ke Chalo”, the poet Neeraj declares,

aur ye circus hai show teen ghante ka

doosra jawaani hai
teesra buddhaapa hai

The entire film was presented as three chapters, with two intermissions. And quite literally, RK has presented three phases of life in these three segments – childhood, youth, and old age. And in each of these phases, there is a different lady with whom the Joker’s heart gets entangled. And every time, his emotions and timid overtures are eventually disregarded – in face of certain compulsions of life that each one of those lady characters struggle with, in their own lives. In the first phase, there is a mismatch of age. In the second, there is a mismatch of location / language / societal background. And in the third, there is a mismatch of aspirations in life versus the values of life.

The reprisal of this song occurs close to the end of the second segment. The Joker has lost his heart to a circus artist visiting from Russia. And as their visit and stay comes to a close, the lady has to leave, and go back to her own country with her group. The circus manager (role played by Dharmendra), in an earlier conversation, has already cautioned him against getting too friendly with the visitors. That caution has now become a prophesy realized. Marina (role played by Russian actress Kseniya Ryabinkina) has to leave. The Joker is at the airport, with Sher Singh (role played by Dara Singh), his partner in crime, or let’s say, his ustaad in the art of romance. The Joker has come to bid farewell to the departing Russian troupe, and his lady love, who cannot stay. There is a brief exchange between the two lovers, and the lady leaves, planting a kiss on the Joker’s lips, and waving a good bye. Sher Singh asks the Joker as to what the lady has said in her native language. The Joker replies forlornly, that her words reminded him of an old song.

And then this song from two decades earlier is played once again, as a background piece. Marina walks to the plane, and the plane departs. And the verses penned by Shailendra are re-told yet once again in the life of the Joker –

duniya mein tere teer ka
ya taqdeer ka maara hoon. . .

This verse segment is the one that I never seem to have been able to get over all my life.  “That, in this life of mine, I have been vanquished either by my own destiny, or the glance arrows coming from your eyes – I do not know which one.” Such a powerful assertion in just ten words, ensconcing within itself a myriad philosophies of life, in a moment narrating and laying bare everything that can and could have gone wrong in an overwhelmed life. The emotions these ten words evoke inside, lie crumpled, tightly wound like a giant ball of thread, with no end visible – not enough words to unravel it and express it.

This song is probably one of the most recognizable songs ever in the ocean of Hindi film music – not only here in India, but also in many parts of this world, where RK’s films are loved as part of their own cultures. The first few bars of the prelude music start to play, and practically every one can recognize which song is coming up. And so, I remember, the first time I saw ‘Mera Naam Joker’, and this scene played out on the screen, and the Joker tells about being reminded of an old favorite song, and the prelude music begins to play – it was quite a shock of recognition that overpowered the heart. Yes, RK presenting this song at this juncture, makes all the sense, rounds up everything that he has been wanting to say through this film – ‘Mera Naam Joker’ – a wayward truant clown I am in this life.

An interesting throwback on this song – it was also repeated within the original film itself. Regular folks would remember, the closing scene – Nargis and Prithviraj Kapoor are visiting RK in the prison, after he has been incarcerated post his trial. It is a brief meeting – about two minutes or so. And as Nargis is asked to take leave, there is this standard dialogue that RK utters – “. . . meri soorat hi aisi hai”. Overcome by the understated innocence and simplicity, plus the unpretentious hangdog look on his face, Nargis once again rushes back into his arms, and exactly the same stanza starts to play in the background.

A few interesting observations about these two reprisals. Take the music and rendition. The song that plays in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ is very nearly the original, but as one listens carefully, one can make out small pieces of extra orchestral music that S-J have weaved in, merging it with the overall background score of the scene. And in the original film ‘Awaara’, the rendition has a small variation at the end. The words of the last line that Mukesh has sung include a very delicate and lovable “हाय” ~ “haaye” –

haaye. . .
awaara hoon..oon..oon. . .

This addition has made this line oh so much more endearing and adorable. Listening to this last one snippet made my day – more than all the pleasure and emotions that are flowing with the original complete version of the song. So surely, this segment, or at least this last line has been re-recorded, even then back in 1951, and presented separately as the end piece.

Next, in both these reprisals, there is a close, very close proximity of the lady love. In ‘Awaara’, the kiss almost happens – just short of the waving scissors of the censor board. And in ‘Mera Naam Joker’, the kiss does happen, with Marina forcefully planting it on the lips of the Joker. Oh well, I don’t know – should we expect a kiss, whenever this part of the song is played ??  Ha, ha, I am sure you will tell me – it happens only in the reel world. 🙂 🙂

Another cute co-incidence I discovered in the last scene of ‘Awaara’. RK and Nargis are in each others arms, and a loud voice calls out in the background, probably the prison warden or constable – “ओ क़ैदी नंबर 308, चलो” (“O prisoner no. 308, come on move.”). I made a little connect in my mind – I don’t know whether that was the intention of the director and dialogue writer. The number 308 – it rang a bell. 308 –> 30-8 –> 30th August –> Shailendra’s birthday. 🙂 🙂

Back to ‘Mera Naam Joker’, I might as well document it here, for possibly no more posts of this film could be forthcoming in the future. The three ladies who appear in each of the three chapters of this film, just examine the screen names – Mary, Marina, Meena. Sound quite connected, flowing right into each other. You combine Mary and Meena – becomes Marina. Just some musings of the wandering mind. Just like the three magazines that RK, Rajendra Kumar and Padmini are seen browsing through on the flight – Time (Padmini), Fortune (Rajendra Kumar) and Life (RK). 🙂 🙂

And then, back to Mukesh, after all so much wandering of the silly mind over the terrain of anecdotes and co-incidences. Even till late afternoon today, I hadn’t the faintest idea whether I would be writing post for the remembrance day today. Mahesh ji’s post, so wholesome and so satisfying, after posting that in early morning, I was not picking up new ideas to write another post on Mukesh. Later, in the afternoon, I was just browsing through the list of songs etc., and don’t know why, but I decided to check out the 10-year-challenge thing for today. Pulled out the list of songs for 27-08-2009. The title ‘Mera Naam Joker’ jumped out at me immediately, and before I could say bambi, my mind had made a few jumps around, connected other material, and brought out this well baked idea of doing a combined 10-year-challenge and repeat-songs post. Yes, I had this repeat song on my list, and had not yet planned when to post it. The mind made that decision for me today, and quite swiftly so, without taking me along on the steps of decision making.

I am glad I checked this out, and got to make this connection and getting this post out today. In the earlier post today, Mahesh ji has mentioned a figure of ~80% songs of Mukesh being hit songs. I cannot think of any other singer, at this level of prolific output, who can be associated with this high a percentage of successful and popular songs from his or her body of work. And then the second connect came when Arun ji deposited on the Whatsapp group, a reminder of the Mukesh anniversary program on Doordarshan seven years ago. I recalled that this was also the very first question that the person interviewing me and Shikha ji, put to me in this program. That question was – “Mukesh ji has about 800 songs to his credit? Why does it always seem that has sung much more?”

And my answer was exactly on these lines – in any singer’s body of work, there is a certain percentage of songs which are memorable, which became popular, and which are quite well retained in the memory. However, with all other singers, this ratio of popular and memorable songs to their total repertoire, is comparatively lower. By extrapolating this expectation, the mind always thinks that in case of Mukesh, his body of work ought to be much larger, if the number of his popular and memorable songs is so much. This is a very interesting point. After that TV program, I had this very discussion with a number of friends, and mostly we agreed to this conclusion.

No doubt the music director and the poet – they have a very significant contribution towards the creation of a song. But it is the voice of Mukesh, that makes something different out of any song. That is what has made so large a percentage of his songs popular and memorable. A soulful voice – that was my assertion on that TV program also, that – “मुकेश जी की आवाज़ में एक अनोखी आत्मीयता है, जो किसी और गायक में नहीं मिलती”.  There is this so unique a characteristic of his rendition – an effortless exposition of the emotions, expressed in a most relaxing mode.

I feel I could go on and on. But then, not now. Another song, another post – there seems to be so much more one wants to say about this soulful, mellifluous voice – almost divine.

“Kisaan Aur Bhagwaan”(1974) was produced by Dara Singh and directed by Chandrakant. The movie had Dara Singh, Yogita Bali, Abhi Bhattacharya, Feroz Khan (special appearance), Asit Sen, Jayashree Gadkar, Jankidas, Shani Malik, Lalita Kumari, Padma Khanna, Parduman Singh, Saudagar Singh, Praveen Kumar, Harbans Papa, Dhanraj, Ved Prakash, Balbeer Vird, Ved Gandhi, Daljeet, Rajkumar, Rajkumari, Amita, Sant Dharmdas, Sheru, Suresh, Shammi, Gopal Saini, Master Veerendra, Amreek Randhava etc in it.

The movie had seven songs in it. One song has been covered in the past.

Here is the second song from “Kisaan Aur Bhagwaan”(1974) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Rafi. Kavi Pradeep is the lyricist. music is composed by Prem Dhawan.

The song is a devotional song cum “summoning the Almighty” genre of song. The picturisation shows Dara Singh lp syncing and leading a group of devotees while marching in a religious procession. The lady looking on at him appeared looks like a young Anjana Manjrekar (Mumtaz) though her name does not figure in the star cast. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identfy her as well as others in the picurisation.

For me, this is a crush that still endures – a crush that I have never gotten over. Since the days when I first saw her in ‘Talash’ (1969) – and the song – “Kar Le Pyaar Karne Ke Din Hain Yahi” – a part of me has always remained smitten with her image and her thoughts. Helen, aah Helen – the ultimate danseuse of the silver screen. Helen – whose art has established the gold benchmark as a dancer, for all measures – from the past, and maybe, forever in the future. For sincerely, till this time, no other dancer has come close to this ultimate – in grace, in innovation, in energy, in movement – in every aspect of this art form.

It is said that the classical dance forms of India, are probably the most expressive traditional dances. The dancers are coached to develop the enhanced expressions for all the human emotions. The artist is taught not just to exhibit a series of well coordinated movements, which of course is very pleasing to the senses, but it is imperative for them to also communicate the emotions through the facial expressions, body language and the finer movements like twitching and trembling of specific muscles and body parts. The art of the Kathak, Bharat Natyam, Khatakali, etc. is so very refined in this aspect, and the aspiring artists are trained from a very young age.

As far as I am aware, Helen simply started dancing in films (in her teens, as early as when she was 13). She probably has no formal training in any dance form. And yet, seeing Helen on screen, in all the dancing forms, is an experience that flows across and covers the entire spectrum of human emotions and human exchange. In a career that spans almost seven decades, from the end of 1940s to the present day, she has likely appeared in 600+ films, and has regaled the audiences with that many colors and flavors of practically any dance form that may exist on this planet – rhumba, prancing, conga, frolic, folk, swing, rock n’ roll, spin, skip, step, samba, kabuki, disco, cabaret, jive, jump, cha cha cha, foxtrot, cavort, flamenco, waltz, boogie, santoso, flit, jig, jitterbug, hustle, gambol, polka, hop, sway, bunny hop, tap, shimmy, careen, salsa, mambo etc. – and of course, lavani and bhangra too. 🙂

Seeing her in so many different avatars of dancing, one is convinced that rhythm is naturally ingrained into her, and that there is almost a divine intervention here that allows her to pick up any choreography and perform exceedingly pleasing movements to it. The expression of emotions come to her so naturally – and the graceful flow of movements that is so excellently effortless – when she is in front of the camera, she actually knows what she is into. Such realization in the mind brings about a natural performance that simply cannot be executed in any better way. Unlike many of her ilk that have also performed on the Indian screen – yes, she knows, she is fully aware of what she is into.

There are a handful of rare performances by her that are not accompanied by any song. One of the finest, and in my humble opinion, her best such performance is a songless dance from the film ‘Hulchul’ (1971). Folks may remember this stage dance – for the variety of dance forms that are packed into this maybe 9 or 10 minutes performance, the multiple emotions that flow through it, and the significant message this dance experience is attempting to convey. (I tried to bring on this dance clip to our blog, but Atul ji is uncertain whether it qualifies. 😉 Maybe, I will try again.)

For me and my puppy-love heart, Helen is an ageless wonder that I adore. Sweet sixteen – that is what she is in my books, and that is how she is going to be, always.

And that also brings up today the most appropriate song of hers – to wish her a very happy birthday. The film is ‘Toofaan’ from 1969. The words are from the pen of Akhtar Romani. Music for this peppy and well paced dance number is created by Daan Singh. The singing voice – Asha Bhosle, probably the longest lasting partnership of singing voice and dancing steps on the Hindi screen.

Sharing the screen with Helen in this song is Dara Singh, whose birth anniversary just came two days ago (19th Nov). With this song we also remember him – he would have been 90 this year.

The dance is a typical folk dance from north India, performed in a very rural setting. Just see how wonderfully, this ordained Queen of the Cabaret – how wonderfully she is executing this oh so typically a rural folk dance.

After completing the recording, Mukesh had commented – people will remember you for this song. He was talking to the music director, and was expressing his emotions having just rendered a beautiful composition. The music director – Daan Singh. The song – “Wo Tere Pyaar Ka Gham” (from the film ‘My Love’ (1970)). Prophetic words, in some ways, yes, because this song is still on the list of favorites of the lovers of this music. But does everyone remember Daan Singh in connection with this song – I am not sure.

A composer with a huge talent, which was matched in his lifetime only by the immense neglect with which the industry has treated him. He had blessings from maestros like Khemchand Prakash and Anil Biswas, but the tinsel world in Bombay did not welcome him enough. The tracks from the unreleased film ‘Bhool Na Jaana’ (c 1965) should have been a sign for any discerning producer concerned with the quality of music in his films. But it was not to be so. Daan Singh spent a few frustrating years in Bombay, and then returned to Jaipur, and continued to work at the AIR Jaipur station.

A career that talks of just maybe five films. ‘Bhool Na Jaana’, mid sixties, unreleased; ‘Toofaan’, 1969, a Dara Singh action film; ‘My Love’, 1970, a romantic story with big name stars – Shashi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore – did not succeed at box office; ‘Bawandar’, 2000, in the final edit, all songs went off screen, and the music remained just on the album; ‘Bhobar’, 2011, Rajasthani film, one song.

And then, on June 18, 2011 itself, he passed away after a brief illness – unsung, un-acknowledged. A sad conclusion, especially when one has heard his creations. Seven years have passed – we honor and remember him on this day.

Today’s song is from the 1969 film ‘Toofaan’. Although an action/adventure film for the B-grade circuit, the music of this film simply great. Here is a soft romantic number sung by Asha Bhosle. The lyrics are written by Akhtar Romani. On screen, the song is performed by actress Anita, who is attempting to entice and seduce Dara Singh, probably in preparation for the arrival of other members of the gang.
