#The Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Sapera-1961’. This costume drama movie was directed by B.J. Patel for Indo Africa Films, Bombay. The cast of this movie has Jyoti, Ranjan, Tiwari, Sundar, Jeevankala, Shree Bhagwan, Uma Dutt, Neena, Poonam Kapoor, Devchand, Shyam, Moolchand, Sattar, Gulab, Shetty, Rajan Kapoor and others.
‘Sapera-1961’ has seven songs as mentioned in Geet Kosh Vol-IV (1961-1970). All the songs for this movie are written by Indeevar and music for this film was composed by Ajit Merchant. The playback singers for this movie are Suman Kalyanpur and Manna Dey.
So far, two nice songs from this movie have been posted on this blog. Both these songs were shared by our respected Sudhir jee.
Out of these two songs I was aware of the song ‘roop tumhaaraa aankhon se pee loon’, which I had in my ‘cassette collections’ and this is a gem of song. While going through the other songs from this movie I noted that this movie has some good songs. For example the song ‘kis ne chheenaa hai mere chaand ko’ is a nice melodious song while I had not heard before.
This movie seems to be an obscure movie of its time, but with some great music composed by Ajit Merchant.
Here is what our in-house encylopeadia Shree Arunkumar jee had mentioned about composer Ajit Merchant while commenting on the above songs of this movie.
AJIT MERCHANT, who died recently (11-3-2011) at the age of 87 yrs., was a very loveable person. ’Ajitbhai’ as he was known in his circle was seen, till last year, taking a morning walk in Dadar Garden.
He gave music to 250 Gujarati, Hindi (7) and Marathi (2) movies and won many awards. He used to say that people’s love was his best award. His neighbour in Dadar-West was Mukesh. Mukesh’s wife Saralaben (who had eloped with Mukesh at the age of 18 years and 7 days [she carried her birth certificate even in that moment] and got married in a Temple first and then in a regular way after things settled) was Gujarati and Merchant’s wife Nilamben were thick friends. Mukesh sang few songs for him, in Hindi and Gujarati also.
Ajit bhai was a good Ghazal writer and his ghazal ” Raat khamosh hai ” is sung by Jagjit sing and is very popular. Jagjit sang this in almost every programme, on public demand!
Today I am presenting the third song from this movie ‘SAPERA-1961’ which is in the voice of Suman Kalyanpur. Only audio of this song is available.
