“Hero”(1983) was produced and directed by Subhash Ghai for Mukta Arts Limited, Bombay. This movie was the usual love story featuring newcomer lead pair supported by distinguished whose who of support cast.
“Hero” (1983) was not the first such movie of those days. The trend was started by “Bobby”(1973) one decade ago and was then followed by “Love Story”(1980), “Rocky”(1981) and “Betaab”(1983).
One thing that was common in all the above movies was that the movies were being produced by starts of yesteryears as launch vehicles for their sons. Raj Kapoor launched his son Rishi Kapoor with “Bobby”(1973). Rajendra Kumar launched his son Kumar Gaurav with “Love Story”(1980). “Rocky”(1981) was produced by Sunil Dutt to launch his son Sanjay Dutt while “Betaab”(1983) was produced by Dharmendra for his son Sunny Deol.
“Hero” (1983) did not indulge in such nepotism. Subhash Ghai launched Jackie Shroff with “Hero”(1983) who had no father or godfather in Hindi movies and who had come up the hard way. He was a leading model in ad world at that time.
The heroine Meenakshi Sheshadri too was a newcomer who was selected on her ability rather than filmy connections. She was Eve’s weekly Miss India 1981.
The support cast included Shammi Kapoor, Bharat Bhushan and Sanjeev Kumar playing important roles. The movie also had Shakti Kapoor, Subhash Ghai, Urmila Bhatt, Bindu, Amrish Puri, Neeta Mehta, Madan Puri, Manek Irani, Suresh Oberoi, Ranjeet, K Date, Manjushree, Salim Khan, Monto etc in it.
Those days, movies would initially get released in important cities. After that, these movies would be released in less important smaller places. The smallest places would get these movies only after the passage of several years by which time most of these movies would have lost their box office draw.
In those days I was based at Jamalpur (Bihar), a very small Railway town with two movie halls. The movie was released in Munger, the district HQ 15 KM away. If my memory serves me right, I had bicycled my way to Mumger to watch this movie. Did I go alone or I was accompanied by some like minded movie watcher ? I cannot recollect now. I had watched another movie in Munger around the same time . That movie was “Maasoom”(1983). I vividly remember going to that movie with my hostel room mate.
I found the movie “Hero”(1983) OK, nothing outstanding. But the movie goers lapped it up. They lapped up its songs even more.
The movie had seven songs in it. Three songs have been covered in the past. Here is the fourth song from “Hero”(1983). It is the title song of the movie. It was arguably the most popular song of the movie. Why arguably, I find that this song was the number one song in Binaca Geetmala final programme of 1984.
So, here is this superhit song from “Hero”(1983). It is sung by Anuradha Paudwal and Manhar Udhas and it is picturised on the lead pair of Meenakshi Sheshadri and Jackie Shroff. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
