I present the song, ‘morele jhanak jhanak jhan baaje paayaliyaa’ rendered by Sadhana Sargam and Rajkamal from Episode-53 of TV Serial, ‘Mahabharat’ (1988). The song is written by Pandit Narendra Sharma and is set to music by Rajkamal based on Raag Darbari. The song is picturised on Gauri Sharma in the role of Urvashi. The actor playing dholak is Gopi Krishna in the role of Gandharva Chitrasen while Satish Kaul is seen in the role of Lord Indra.

Gauri Sharma-Tripathi is a well-known Kathak dancer belonging to Lucknow Gharana who was trained under her mother, Uma Sharma and Lachhu Maharaj. Currently she is an artist in residence at the Southbank Centre, London which is the UK’s largest art and cultural centre. She is the wife of the current BJP Member of Parliament, Shashank Mani Tripathi (B. Tech from IIT, Delhi and MBA from Switzerland). Their daughter Tarini is also a Kathak dancer. Surprisingly, Gauri Sharma’s name was not mentioned in the credit titles of ‘Mahabharat’ (1988).

Episode-53 covers the start of Pandavas in exile for 12 years in the forest followed by one year in ‘agyatvas’ (anonymity). If detected during the year of ‘agyatvas’, they get exiled once again for 12 years in the forest. Lord Krishna advises Pandavas to start preparing for the war with Kauravas for which he tells Arjun to do penance to obtain divine weapons. Arjun does penance and eventually pleases Lord Shiva, who bestows him with Pashupatastra, a divine missile with a condition that he cannot use it against the mortals because the use of it can destroy the universe (something like today’s nuclear weapons used more as deterrent than using them). Lord Shiva also advises Arjun to obtain other effective weapons from Indralok. So, Arjun visits Indralok and becomes the guest of Lord Indra.

The context of the song is that in Indralok, Urvashi (Gauri Sharma) is performing a dance recital in the court of Lord Indra (Satish Kaul) with percussion being played by Chitrasen (Gopi Krishna) a Gandharva who is a teacher of music and dance in Lord Indra’s court. Towards the end of Urvashi’s dance, Arjun enters the court of Indra and Urvashi is mesmerised with Arjun’s presence. Arjun seeks permission from Lord Indra to leave Indralok and return to the earth as he has not only got the divine weapons, he has also learnt to use them. But Lord Indra reminds him that it is necessary for him to learn dance and music from Chitrasen before he returns to the earth as this is also one type of weapon which will be useful to him when Pandavas have to spend one year in anonymity. In his presence status, it will be difficult to remain incognito for him. Hence he needs to learn music and dance from Chitrasen.

But Arjun’s extended stay in Indralok to learn dance and music from Chitrasen and Urvashi falling in love with Arjun has a pivotal event in the story of Mahabharata which unfolds when Pandavas start their one year in anonymity. It is then that Arjun comes to know the importance of learning dance and music from Chitrasen.
