Today’s song is from a social film – Aadhaar-1945.

This is one of those films about which no other information is available, than what has been given in the HFGK. At such times, one realises the importance of HFGK.But for it, many films would have been forgotten without even making the historians aware of their existence in the past. The film was not available for seeing on the social media and nowhere its storyline was found. In such cases, what to write about it ?

However, the story is only one point. There are many other matters which can be discussed like the songs, the Music Director, lyricist, producer, director, the Banner, singers, actors and other matters. The film made by Geeta Pictures, Bombay was directed by Ramanlal Desai. This name is a classic case of ” Same Name Confusion”, because in the same time period, there was yet another Hindi film director with the same name Ramanlal Desai. Now, how to differentiate between them ?

The obvious action is to first find out their full name, that is including their father’s name. In this case one was RAMANLAL LALBHAI DESAI and the other was RAMANLAL BHIMBHAI DESAI. For today’s film, it was Ramanlal Lalbhai Desai. Here is information on both….

RAMAN LAL (Lalbhai) DESAI

Ramanlal Lalbhai Desai was born on 6-9-1915 at Ahmedabad . His father was a Station master in the BBCI Railway ( Bombay-Baroda and Central India Railway). He was educated in Bombay and he studied upto Inter-Arts. He soon left his studies to work as an assistant cameraman and assistant Director, in Paramount Pictures for Thief of Baghdad-34. In 1935 he shifted to Ganesh Movietone but came back to Paramount. He was assistant director in Fairy of the flute-36, Guru Ghantal-37 ,Black ghost-37, Burqawali-36, Aladdin-33, Vagabond lover-38, Madhur bansari-39 etc. He co-directed films like Patriot-37, Darpan-41 and Mere Saajan-41, in Rex Pictures. He was a good editor and a musician.

He became a full fledged Director with Daughter of the jungle-42, Muhabbat ki jeet-43, Circus girl-43, Bhagta Bhoot-43, Rangeela Dost-44, Aadhar-45, Kismat ka Dhani-46, Jadui putali-46, Tiger man-47, Naqali Heera-48, Dhanwale-48, Dilwale-48, Roshni-49,Sangeeta-50, Aab e Hayaat-55, Hum bhi kuch kam nahin -58, Minister-59 and Zalim tera jawab nahin-60. He turned to Gujarati films and directed Sole saaj singar-77 and Kul deepak-78.
He was working as a Production supervisor for the film Nastik-54 (credited).
(Thanks to Shri. Harish Raghuwanshi ji for some info used here along with my notes).

RAMAN LAL (Bhimbhai) DESAI

Raman B Desai was born in Bilimora,Gujarat,on 28-4-1918. At the age of 20 years, he joined Wadia Movietone as an assistant Director. He assisted Director Chaturbhuj Doshi for quite some time.

He became an independent Director with Pehli Pehchan in 1947. Then came Narad Muni-49, Raja Harishchandra-52, Hari Darshan-53, Naag Panchami-53, Chakradhari-54, Rajyogi Bharthari-54, Navaratri-55, Vaman Avatar-55, Ram navami-56, Naag Mani-57, Chandi Pooja-57, Grihalaxmi-59 (he also produced it) and Amar jyoti-1965. He also directed 6 Gujarati films.Due to his expertise in religious films,he was known as ” King of Mythological Films”.

Raman B Desai expired on 22-12-1997. ( He should not be mistaken for another director Ramanlal Desai, who operated in the same period and directed films like Aab-e-Hayaat-55 and Sangeeta-50 etc).

The cast of the film was Umakant, Kokila, Yaqub, Phiroza, Shehzadi and many others. Even Shehzadi was a case of Same Name Confusion. One was Shehzadi Sr. – sister of Zubeida, the Heroine of Alam Ara-1931 and the other was the Junior-who featured in the popular song ” main to dilli se dulhan laya re” from the film Jhoola-1942. Luckily, the two Shehzadis operated with a gap of a few years. Still the confusion persists.

There is yet another actress Phiroza in this film, who too was a member of Same Name Confusion pair. But more about her some other time. The Heroine of this film was Kokila. I have absolutely no idea who this Kokila was. First I thought it was Nirupa Roy as her real name was Kokilaben, but she entered films much later. In 1945 she was only 12 year old. The hero of the film was Umakant, the well known ” Laxman” in Ramayan story films of Prakash Pictures and others too.

I am sure most people would not know anything about him. People remember Dilip kumar for his double role in ‘Ram aur Shyam’ and Triple role in ‘Bairaag’. You also remember Sanjeev Kumar for his 9 roles in ‘ Naya Din nayi Raat’ or Kamal Hassan for his 10 roles in Dashavtar, but hardly anyone knows that Umakant Desai was the FIRST actor to do 3 Roles in the film ” Hukum ka Ikka “-1939 ( Rajkumar,Madari and Common Man).

Umakant Desai was born in Sankheda, near Vadodara (Baroda),Gujarat on 13-6-1908. After matriculation,he came to Bombay and did a job in B.B. & C. I . Railways (Bombay,Baroda and Central India Railway,a private Railway company of pre Independence period). He used to do roles in local dramas. One day Director Chimanlal Desai saw him in a drama called ” Jaya and Jayant”. He was so impressed with him that he took him to act in Gujarat’s First Talkie ” Narsi Mehta”-1932. In this film Umakant did the role of Krishna.

So,the son of a landlord Himmatbhai Jagubhai Desai became a film actor. He joined Prakash Pictures on a salary of Rs.150/- pm,but when he left Prakash,he was drawing Rs.3000/- p.m.. In 1934,he worked in Gujarati film ‘Sansar Leela’.He sang 2 duets with Rajkumari in this film. The film was a Hit and was remade in Hindi as “Nai Duniya”-1934. He worked in Bharat Milap-42. His best remembered role was as LAXMAN in the film ” RAM RAJYA”-1943,which created several records, including that it was the only Hindi film Gandhi ever saw in his lifetime !

Umakant worked in 59 Hindi films and 15 Gujarati films. Anmol Moti-48 was his last film as a Hero. Then he shifted to doing character roles. He had worked with Durga Khote, Shobhana Samarth, Pramila, Ratnamala, Ranjana, Sitara, Snehprabha Pradhan, Meena Kumari, Amita, Vyjayanti mala, Nalini Jaywant, Kamini Kaushal etc. For fluency in Hindi and Urdu, he appointed a Teacher also.

He worked in 26 films of Prakash,in which 8 films were directed by Vijay Bhatt. He mostly worked in mythological and social films. Some of his films were,Miss mala,Chhote Babu,Station master, Amar Asha,Poornima,Anmol Moti,Kavita,Hamara Ghar etc . He did Laxman’s role in 7 films.

Umakant’s son and daughter in law died a tragic death in the Snow Blizzard in the USA in 1975. His wife Kaumudi ben died in 2006 and Umakant died on 25-1-2007. He was awarded Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award in 2004. ( Adapted from Shri Harish Raghuvanshi ji, famous film historian, compiler and writer’s Gujarati article on Umakant).

Here is a song from today’s film, sung by Umakant Desai. Enjoy….

Song-Ye chaand hamen hans kar (Aadhaar)(1945) Singer- Umakant Desai, Lyricist- M A Razi,MD- S N Tripathi

Lyrics

ye chaand
ye chaand
hamen hans kar
ye chaand
hamen hans kar
kuchh yaad dilaata hai
kuchh yaad dilaata hai
soye huye armaan ko o
soye huye armaan ko
seene mein jagaata hai
seene mein jagaata hai

mil mil ke galey dil ke armaan nikaalenge
mil mil ke galey dil ke armaan nikaalenge
raahat ka zamaana ab gaata hua aata hai
raahat ka zamaana ab gaata hua aata hai
ye chaand
ye chaand hamen hans kar
ye chaand hamen hans kar
kuchh yaad dilaata hai
kuchh yaad dilaata hai

din aish se guzrenge
ab pyaar kee baaton mein
din aish se guzrenge
ab pyaar kee baaton mein
jaagee hai meree kismat
jaagee hai meree kismat
dil jhoom ke gaata hai
dil jhoom ke gaata hai
jaagee hai meree kismat
dil jhoom ke gaata hai
dil jhoom ke gaata hai
ye chaand
ye chaand hamen hans kar
ye chand hamen hans kar
kuchh yaad dilaata hai
kuchh yaad dilaata hai
ye chaaand
