Today’s catchy, popular and visually enjoyable comic song video is from the Hit film – Hum aapke hain koun-1994.

The film was made by Rajshri productions, Bombay by 3 brothers- Kamal, Raj and Ajit Barjatya. It was directed by Suraj Barjatya and the music director was Ram Laxman. The film’s 14 songs were written by Ravindra Rawal (10 songs) and Dev Kohli (4 songs). The cast consisted of Madhuri Dixit, Salman Khan, Mohnish Behl (son of actress Nutan), Renuka Shahane, Alok Nath, Reema Lagu, Ajit Vachhani, Dilip Joshi, Satish Shah, Anupam Kher, Laxmikant Berde (leading comedian from Marathi films) and many others. The film was censored on 18-7-1994 and was released on 5-8-1994.

Many of the readers may find it difficult to digest that this comparatively ‘New’ song is discussed by a person who usually writes on ‘antiques‘ , i.e. songs from films of 30s and 40s. A solid jump of 50+ years ? Wonder pe Thunder ! You need not be surprised.

It is not that I do not like new films or songs, but nowadays everything about these films or songs is discussed on Print and TV media so much that there is hardly anything left to write about. In any case, I have discussed earlier many songs from films of the 80s,90s and 2000 and after that also. For example a song from the film Lagaan-2001 was discussed, also from Zubeida-2000, Chameli ki shaadi-88 etc were discussed by me. In this connection, my favourite thought is “Not all that was made before 1970 was good and not all that is made after 1970 is bad “.

These days I have lost patience to sit through 3 and more hours to watch a film, but I do have some new films listed as my favourites too. ( I saw these films in instalments,on TV). In recent times, few films have impressed me to no end. Film ‘Hum aapke hain kaun'(hereafter called HAHK)-94 is one of them. I genuinely liked the film and a few of its songs. The film came as a Puff of fresh air amidst the cluster of third rate meaningless movies. This Rajashri film totally fulfilled its purpose of clean entertainment. Though established in 1947, Rajashri films’ first noteworthy film was Aarti-62, followed by Dosti-64. From the 60s to the 80s, they made many successful clean family entertaining films.

In 1988, Rajashri brought an era of Love stories that crossed class barriers. Film ‘Maine pyar kiya’-88 was a love story that touched the hearts of youngsters. The film introduced a young Director Sooraj Barjatya ( grandson of the founder of RF) and also brought a star Salman Khan to make him a Superstar. It was his second movie in career.

The basic plot of Hum Aapke Hain Koun-1994 was based on the studio’s earlier film Nadiya Ke Paar (1982), which was based on Keshav Prasad Mishra’s Hindi novel Kohbar Ki Shart. The film features music by Raamlaxman who also composed a 14-song soundtrack, an unusually large number of songs for that period.

The film was made in 6 Crores but it became the highest-grossing film of the year, having grossed 130 crores worldwide. It also became the highest-grossing Indian film at the time of its release. It contributed to a change in the Indian film industry, with new methods of distribution and a turn towards less violent stories. It was the first film to gross over ₹100 crore in India, and when adjusted for inflation, is the highest-grossing Indian film of the 1990s and also one of the highest-earning Indian cinema films ever. Box Office India described it as “the biggest blockbuster of the modern era.”

The film was also dubbed into Telugu as Premalayam and was a major success, running for over 200 days in theaters.

At the 42nd National Film Awards, Hum Aapke Hain Koun-1994 won two awards, including the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. At the 40th Filmfare Awards, the film received a leading 13 nominations, and won five awards, including Best Film, Best Director (Barjatya), Best Actress (Dixit) and Special Award to Lata Mangeshkar for “Didi Tera Devar Deewana”. It also won six awards at the newly introduced Screen Awards.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun-1994 is considered as one of the most influential films in the Indian film industry as well as in pop culture. It made a lasting impact on wedding celebrations in India, which often include songs and games from the film. It is credited as being a defining moment in Hindi cinema’s box office history, and the beginning of a revolution in the Indian film distribution system.

Madhuri Dixit was my favourite actress ( but I am not M F Hussain, please). Once I had the pleasure to get introduced to her when I went to a relative who stayed on the first floor of the same building where Madhuri stayed on the second floor, in Juhu. She had come to them like an ordinary Marathi Mulgi in casual dress and still looked beautiful.

Madhuri was born on 15-5-1967 and her first film was Abodh-84. She acted in 71 films. She came into the limelight with her dance on the song ‘Ek do teen…’from Tezaab-88. It was choreographed by Saroj Khan. Same year she did a controversial scene with Vinod Khanna in the film “Dayavaan”-88. In 1993, she created waves with her dance and song “Choli ke peeche..” in the film Khalnayak. This too was choreographed by Saroj khan. Her last film released is ‘Total Dhamaal”-2018, directed by Inder Kumar.

Salman Khan ( Abdul Rasheed Salim Salman khan) was born on 27-12-1965. Except for his first 2 films, I never liked him, as an actor and a human being. That of course is besides the point. His films mostly run to full houses. Till today he acted in 106 films. After the success of these 2 initial films, Salman Khan thought that the Filmy name of ‘PREM‘ was lucky for him. Subsequently, till 2015, he has used the name PREM in 15 films. ( by the way, Amitabh Bachhan used the name VIJAY in 20 films till 2010, Jeetendra used it in 18 films and Mithun used it in 16 films.)

The story of the film was…..

It is a very simple plot. Mohnish Behl ( Rajesh Nath) and Salman ( Prem Nath)are brothers raised by their bachelor uncle Alok Nath ( Kailash Nath). Alok Nath arranges an engagement for Mohnish Behl with Renuka Shahane ( Pooja), daughter of his old friends Anupam Kher ( Prof. Sidharth Caudhary) and Reema Lagoo ( Mrs. Chaudhary). At the engagement, Salman meets Renuka’s younger sister Madhuri ( Nisha). Through the engagement, marriage, and then preparations for the birth of Renuka and Mohnish first child, Salman and Madhuri secretly flirt and become closer and closer. Finally, they reveal their love to Renuka who immediately approves and declares her plan to arrange their engagement (in her role as the oldest female in Salman’s family). But before she can tell anyone else, she dies after a tragic fall, leaving her son motherless. In an effort to provide a mother for the baby, Alok suggests to Anupam and Reema that Mohnish should marry Madhuri. Madhuri at first misunderstands them to mean Salman. However, even when she learns the truth, she decides not to say anything as it has brought so much joy to everyone to plan this wedding. Salman understands and accepts her decision. At the last moment, the truth is revealed, through a Dog Redo ( Tuffy ). The families understand immediately the purpose of their sacrifice and applaud them for making it, but insist that it is purposeless, Madhuri can move into the household as an aunt rather than a mother to this orphaned baby. Happy Ending with another wedding.

Somewhere in 2020, I came across an article in The Hindu, dt. 11-2-2020, which was about the film Hum aapke hain koun-1994. I copied it and kept it on my Laptop. Here it is for our readers, partly…

Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! is credited as being a defining moment in Hindi cinema’s box office history, and the beginning of a revolution in the Indian film distribution system. When it was released, cinema was in decline in India due to improved cable television, home video, and film piracy. The film was originally released in only a small number of theatres that agreed to upgrade their facilities. Due to widespread demand for the film, many other theatres upgraded in order to get the film. Although ticket prices were raised, the upgraded theatres brought back people who had been lost to television. Also, the film’s lack of vulgarity was a sign to middle-class family patrons that they could return to the theatre. This film, in addition to the following year’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, contributed to an increase in Indian cinema attendance of 40% in just two years.

The film was so successful that it literally gave the term blockbuster new meaning in India. Box Office India said, “Hum Aapke Hain Koun.. took business for films released afterwards to another level. To put into perspective how business changed before Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! an all India share of 10 crore for a big film was regarded as blockbuster business but after Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! the blockbuster business figure went to 20 crore.”

Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! influenced many subsequent Hindi films. The film was also a trendsetter for glamorous family dramas and NRI-related films, and started Bollywood’s “big-fat-wedding-film” trend. In 1998 a theatre company in London, where the film had played for a year, staged a production based on the film titled Fourteen Songs, Two Weddings and a Funeral. Planet Bollywood has noted that no wedding is complete without some songs from this film, and it has been used as a script to design wedding plans. For years afterwards, women wanted to wear a purple sari like the one worn by Madhuri Dixit in the song “Didi Tera Devar Deewana”.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! belongs to a small collection of films, including Kismet (1943), Mother India (1957), Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and Sholay (1975), which are repeatedly watched throughout India and are viewed as definitive Hindi films with cultural significance.

About the film’s Music Director Ram Laxman….

Vijay Patil was born on 16-9-1942 at Nagpur. He was trained in music by his father Kashinath and uncle Pralhad. He also joined Bhatkhande College for music. Later he became an expert in playing Accordian. To make a career in music, he came down to Bombay and started an Orchestra group by name ” Amar Vijay”. Once he met Dada Kondke, the famous actor, director and producer of Marathi. He liked the orchestra. His elder brother Surendra Patil used to be an expert Flutist in the orchestra. It was decided to start giving music to films together, when Dada kondke offered them the music of his film ” Pandu Havaldar “-1975.

It was Dada Kondake who gave them the name Ram Laxman, since Vijay Patil and Surendra worked together. Film’s music became very popular and they gave music to Dada Kondke’s 11 films in a row, from 75 to 82. Their first break for Hindi films came in 1977 with Agent Vinod.

Surendra (Ram in the pair) expired suddenly in 1977, due to Jaundice, after their first film itself. Vijay (Laxman in the pair) decided to continue the name Ramlaxman. He worked for Marathi, Hindi, Bhojpuri and Telugu films. The Barjatya group of Rajashri films also came to their help. His first major break in Hindi came after 25 films. ” Maine Pyar Kiya”-89 was a Musical hit film.

Within the next 5 years and another 25 films he gave music to Hum Aapke Hai Kaun-94. This time he hit Gold. The success was unprecedented and long lasting. Till 2016, he gave music to 61 Hindi films, with 433 songs to his credit. Side by side, he was doing Marathi films also. From 1975 to 2011 i.e. in 36 years, he did 37 Marathi films.
Ram Laxman died on 21-5-2021,due to a Heart attack.(Thanks to article by Jaideep Pathakji in Maharashtra Times of 28-10-2018, Marathi Sangeetkar Kosh by Madhu Potdar,marathifilmdata.com , Harish Raghuwanshi ji and my notes, for this article).

Lastly, two anecdotes connected with this film. First, as is well known, the famous painter M F Hussain had a crush on Madhuri. He saw film HAHK 85 times-as per a report in Indian Express (variously differing in other news portals from 60 to 90 times !). He then made a film ‘Gajgamini ‘-2000, with Madhuri. As expected, the film was a disaster at the Box Office. He also made many paintings of Madhuri ( she took payments per sitting).

Secondly, in one of her interviews, Lata Mangeshkar had said ” When I first heard the Lyrics of this song, I was rolling with laughter. ‘Joote de do’ and ‘Paise le lo’ were so funny. Same thing happened at the time of recording. In the final rehearsal before the actual recording, I started laughing again. However, I completed the recording without any hitch. I was 100% sure that the song would be a hit song. Later I saw the film for this scene only.”

Today’s song is one of my favourites. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and S.P. Balsubramanyam. Let us now enjoy the video song….
