Hullo Atuldom

“Maine Pyaar Kiya” (MPK 1989) was from the Rajshri Productions stable. It was directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya, story by S.M.Ahale, and screenplay and dialogues were by Sooraj Barjatya. Asad Bhopali and Dev Kohli were the lyricists. Vijay Patil (a.k.a Raamlaxman) was the music director. Bhagyashree made her debut in this movie and it was Salman Khan’s first as a hero (he was present in “Biwi Ho To Aisi” in a supporting role before this). Aloknath, Rajeev Verma, Mohnish Behl, Reema Lagoo, Ajeet Vachani, Harish Patel, Huma Khan, Dilip Joshi, and Laxmikant Berde formed the supporting cast. There was a ‘homing pigeon’ too.
S.P.Balasubramaniam, Lata Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh, Usha Mangeshkar, and Sharda Sinha were the singers who sang the 10 songs in the movie. We have the following two songs from the movie on the blog

Song Dat of post Remarks
Kahe tose sajna ye tohri sajaniya 16 July 2013 (by Shekhar Gupta)
Antaakshari song 27 December 2013

Shekhar Gupta’s post gives us the story of the movie.

Asad Bhopali was born Asadullah Khan in Bhopal on July 10th, 1921 to Munshi Ahmad Khan. He was learned in Persian, Arabic, Urdu and English. AT 28 he moved to Mumbai to become a songwriter. That was the period of lyricists and songwriters of repute like D.N. Madhok, Prem Dhawan, Rajinder Krishan, Khumar Barabankavi, Jaan Nisar Akhtar etc. and Asad Bhopali managed to create an identity for himself.

Asad Bhopali has given songs which have been popular and can be heard on the radio and music systems regularly. Songs like ‘woh jab yaad aaye’; ‘kismat bigadi duniya badali’; ‘sau baar janam lenge’; the fun song in the late ’70s ‘ram dulaari maike gayi’. Today’s generation or those in their 30s currently will remember the songs of ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (MPK) which was among the last movies that he wrote songs for. He passed away on June 9th, 1990. Thanking Asad Bhopali for today’s song and numerous others that he wrote for movies since his debut in 1949.

I have never seen MPK as a whole. Also I have not seen all the songs but the song with this post is one that no TV viewer or Radio listener can escape. It is in the voices of S P Balasubramaniam and Lata Mangeshkar but not a duet, its a multi version song. We cannot call the male version serious or sad but the female version is full of coy romance and is lip-synced by the dainty Bhagyashree Patwardan.

June 9th happens to be the birthday of a dear friend of Atuldom. I wish him a very Happy Birthday with this post. He is a person who is my inspiration in the sense that he learnt so many skills after retirement proving that there is no age-limit to learn anything new. He has no prejudices as regards the age of the music he listens to- meaning he is of the opinion there are good and bad songs/ music in all ages and times. He may not go out of his way seeking songs of new movies but appreciates good work when he sees it. He is generous in sharing his knowledge. He is among the few persons who I am comfortable in chatting with and can pick up the phone and start talking as if there is no gap in communication. The mornings of the WhatsApp group associated with the blog begin with his “GOOD MORNING” messages and we treasure the beautiful thoughts that come with it. (I am sorry if I am repeating everything that I said last year, but my feelings and thoughts remain the same)

We in Atuldom like to think of him as our IN-HOUSE ENCYCLOPEDIA and I prefer addressing him as Guruji or Arunji. Yes!! today is our dear Arunkumar Deshmukhji’s birthday. All his posts are so well-researched that I am sure it is a big, time consuming activity for him considering that he also has his responsibilities of being a doting father and proud grandfather. May God give you all the energy needed to keep the posts coming in at a steady pace and awaiting your 1100th post soon.

Wish you A Very Happy Birthday Guruji!!! Hope the great musical times continue. 🙂

Hullo Atuldom

In the (almost) 14 years of its existence, there have been many changes in the lives of those associated with atulsongaday.me.

Our Atulji has shifted base a few times in these years. If I am not wrong his daughter has qualified to be a doctor as also Nahmji’s son and Shri Arunkumar Deshmukhji’s (Guruji) grandson/s have also become doctors. Peevesie who entered the world of ASAD and was called the youngest follower turning to contributor and mouthpiece (for the blog) among her friends and family has since become a working adult and even has a life-partner as also Nahmji’s daughter. Avinashji has also shifted base a few times and also had an overseas stint in the years in between. Maheshji (Mukesh Fan is his second name) has returned to Motherland and is no longer an NRA (non-resident atulite). I know that similar changes, in life & on the work front, have happened in the lives of other Atulites too. I have myself graduated from being a full-time mother to a leisurely-paced mother.

There is a lesser-known Atulite who has contributed only one post as a guest-poster (she took over the mantle of youngest contributor). Her forte’ is that she is musically inclined as her father (a hyper-active atulite). I know that she also pens verses which are very meaningful. She had given her father this post on his birthday six years back. She was welcomed wholeheartedly by atulites who wanted more from her but her preoccupation with education and other activities may not have given her time to contribute more to the blog. But the song with that post was so meaningful, it would have been appropriate for today. She has grownup into a young adult and is stepping into a new phase of her life. Here is wishing her all the best for the future.

There is a happy event happening in the life of our Guruji too in the next few days. Wishing him lots of joy and all the best to his grandson.

“Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai” is a title that was first used in Hindi films in 1961 which was written and directed by Nasir Husain and had his time-tested formula of hero impersonating, heroine falling in love with the impersonator, misunderstandings creeping in due to the villain and heroine’s father, and finally the hero and heroine getting married with the blessings of all elders. The movie was littered with great songs.

The title was repeated again in 1998. This time the director was Deepak Sareen who had started his career as assistant to Yash Chopra in ‘Deewar’. He had been assistant in ‘Kabhi Kabhi’, ‘Doosra Aadmi’, ‘Silsila’, ‘Mashaal’ and ‘Faasle’ before independently directing ‘Ranbhoomi’, ‘Aaina’, ‘Gaddar’, ‘Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai’, and ‘Albela’. This romantic film had a skirt-chaser for a hero who is disliked by the girl initially. He woos her by promising to give up his errant ways, convinces both families that they are ready to marry. But the twist in the tale comes in the form of the hero’s son from a previous girlfriend who insists that he will tell-all to the fiancee if the hero doesn’t tell himself. The story comes to a happy ending with the girl and the child forgiving the hero and ‘THE END’

“Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai” (1998) starred Twinkle Khanna, Farida Jalal, Himani Shivpuri, Namrata Shirodkar (guest appearance), Salman Khan, Anupam Kher, Johnny Lever, Saeed Jaffery, and Master Aditya Narayan. The movie had songs written by Anand Bakshi and composed by Jatin-Lalit. Today we are having the movie debuting with a song sung by Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam. It has the whole cast except Aditya Narayan enjoying the engagement of Salman and Twinkle.

Hullo Atuldom

6th February 2022. Sad day for lovers of music. The news which all music fans didn’t want to hear came through a friend’s message on Whatapp. Our dear Sur Saraswati – Nightingale – Miracle of Nature – Swar Kokila (all such epithets fell right and square on her slender shoulders) is no more. She was a power house of talent that came in a small package. She was the face of Indian film music who rode the classical music vehicle with as much ease as light music. Bhajans rendered by her were what the nation woke up to for years and were the inspiration for singers of the later generation to try their hand at classical and devotional songs.

She was a fan of cricket for the longest time and Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt who was pouring his heart out on a TV channel said that she was ill yesterday or else she would have been the first to tweet a congratulatory message to the victorious Under-19 team for winning the World Cup. That is one thing that has amazed me about the Grand-Lady of Indian Film music. She took to Twitter, Facebook and other social media as if she was a person of the now-generation. She was very active on social media.

A cross section of Indians have been pouring their heart out and putting out tweets but one that struck me most was “We will miss you and hope the void left by you doesn’t fill”.

A journey which began in the 40s at the age of 13 has come to an end after giving voice to songs in close to 1884 films in Hindi and about 30 films in other languages. A person who sang for Shobana Samarth in 1949 and Kajol (Shobana Samarth’s grand daughter) in the 90s. A person who brought tears to the eyes of the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru with her rendition of “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logo“. A person who has given us songs for every mood is being bid farewell from this mortal world as I write this (those are the visuals playing on all the news channels). She has been draped in her trademark white saree with a simple border. She has been brought to Shivaji Park with full state honors and the nation is in two-day mourning for this Bharat Ratna.

Like she has said in her song “Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai” we have her voice with us forever. And the song playing at this point is “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logo“” with Lata Didi saying “Ab Hum To Safar Karte Hain’ —-prophetic.

For this post I was looking for one of her last Bollywood song. We have covered Lata Didi’s last released songs in the course of Atul ji’s series ‘Yearwise Review’. So, the song with this post is not the absolute last but one from the last decade of her journey in Bollywood.

It is from the 2005 release ‘Lucky’ which had the tagline ‘No Time for Love’. The song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Adnan Sami, written by Sameer and tuned by Adnan Sami.

Like she has sung

rahen naa rahen hum,
mehkaa karenge
ban ke kali,
ban ke sabaa,
baage wafaa mein

Her mehak will be with us forever

Song – Ik Ajnabi Sa Ehsaas Dil Ko Sataaye (Lucky) (2005) Singer – Adnan Sami, Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Sameer, MD – Adnan Sami

Lyrics (Provided by Prakashchandra)
(Based on Audio)

ik ajnabi sa
ehsaas dil ko sataaye
shaayad yahi to pyaar hai
betaabion mein
dhadkan meri chain paaye
shaayad yahi to pyaar hai

kuchh bhi kaho na
aaa aaa
kuchh bhi suno na
phir bhi
bechain dil hai hamaara
ho oo oo
behke kadam hain
aaa aaa
mushkil mein hum hain
dekho
sambhlen bhala kaise yaara
chaahe bina hi
nazdeek hum chale aaye
shaayad yahi to pyaar hai

nazren bichha den
pehre laga den
dil pe
par dil kisi ki na maane
kaanton pe chal ke
sholon mein jal ke
ro ke
mil ke rahenge deewaane
oo oo oo
chaahat ki lau to
aandhi mein bhi jhilmilaaye
shaayad yahi to pyaar hai
oo oo oo
ik ajnabi sa
ehsaas dil ko sataaye
shaayad yahi to pyaar hai

ye mulaqaaten
ye teri aankhen
baaten
aaa aaa
ek pal na main bhool paaun
kitni mohabbat
hai kitni chaahat
tum se

ho oo oo
kaise bhala main bataaun
oo oo

achha lage jo
tu saamne muskuraaye
shaayad yahi to pyaar hai
ik ajnabi sa
ehsaas dil ko sataaye
ho oo oo
shaayad yahi to pyaar hai

ho oo oo
kuchh bhi kaho na
aaa aaa
kuchh bhi suno na
phir bhi
aaa aaa
bechain dil hai hamaara
ho oo oo
behke kadam hain
mushkil mein hum hain dekho
ho oo oo
sambhlen bhala kaise yaara
chaahe bina hi
nazdeek hum chale aaye
shaayad yahi to pyaar hai
shaayad yahi to pyaar hai
shaayad yahi to pyaar hai
shaayad yahi to pyaar hai
shaayad yahi to pyaar hai

Hullo Atuldom

‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ (release date 30th July 2004) is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by David Dhawan. It has a cast headed by Priyanka Chopra, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Amrish Puri, Kadar Khan, with Shashikala, Upasana Singh, Supriya Karnik, Satish Shah, Rajpal Yadav, etc for support. A few well-known faces make cameo appearances as themselves. The songs of the movie are written by Arun Bhairav, Jalees Sherwani (never heard these two names) and Sameer. Sajid- Wajid and Anu Malik are the music composers with Anu Malik giving music for one song and Sajid-Wajid having tuned the rest (there were 8 songs with two songs being multi-version songs).

The movie is the story of two friends Sameer and Sunny who meet in Goa after a gap of many years and only one of them recognizes the other as the ‘bachpan ka yaar‘. Actually Sunny seeks out Sameer with the help of Sameer’s grandmother (Shashikala) and tracks him down in Goa. Sunny gets Sameer to believe that he is after the girl, Rani Singh whom he is trying to woo. That makes it two hurdles for Sameer to overcome in his love-life; the other being Rani’s father (Amrish Puri). The movie has some fun moments between Sameer and Rani’s parents as also the landlord (Kadar Khan) of Sameer and Sunny. After a lot of madcap happenings Sameer comes to know that Sunny is actually Arun Khanna- his bachpan ka yaar – and that his aim in seeking out Sameer was just to reunite with him.

On the way to ‘THE END’ there is a chase through a crowded stadium (filmed at Bangalore’s stadium) after Sameer is taunted by Sunny about Sameer’s anger-management issues. Sameer snatches the microphone from the Chief Guest at the cricketing event, a friendly match between India and Pakistan, much to the amusement of the commentators and the players. He makes a public apology to Rani and her parents and proposes to her in front of the spectators.

This movie has Salman Khan playing Sameer, Akhsay Kumar playing Sunny alias Arun Khanna and Priyanka Chopra playing Rani Singh. Rajpal Yadav plays a madcap astrologer who keeps giving Sameer directions on how to woo Rani which always flop.

There have been a few posts on the blog, since 24th when the movie based on the 1983 world cup had its theatrical release. That movie is on my wish-list, but all those posts and references to cricketers making appearances, as themselves, on the silver screen, reminded me of this movie. Of course we have had Sunil Gavaskar and Sandeep Patil playing romantic characters on-screen and Syed Kirmani playing a negative character too, but we are looking at films that have cricketers playing themselves.

‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ has Navjot Singh Sidhu play a commentator (he had turned a commentator mouthing Sidhuisms by then) and Sajid Khan (the comedian and film maker) sharing the commentary box. Then we have Javagal Srinath, Ashish Nehra, Irfan Pathan, Mohammad Kaif, Parthiv Patel, and Harbhajan Singh looking at the goings-on, on the pitch, from the pavilion. And (finally) we have Kapil Dev as the chief guest from whom Sameer snatches the microphone. Kapil Paaji also puts in his two-bit to help Sameer’s case with Rani and her father and put an end to the interruption that the drama was causing to the start of the game.

We are having this film making its debut on the blog to wish Salman Khan on his 56th birthday. Here is wishing him health and happiness and a long innings entertaining us Hindi Film Followers. This romantic song is composed by Sajid-Wajid and written by Arun Bhairav. It is sung by Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan.

peechhe peechhe aa gai
tujhe pyaar ho gaya

kisi ke roke se
mujhko piya ne dekh liya
haaye re dhokhe se
maana ke mujhe dil dega wo

maana ke tujhe dil dega wo
magar apni jaan dega wo

laal dupatta
udd gaya re bairi hawa ke jhonke se

Hullo Atuldom

“Andaaz Apna Apna” which released in November 1994 was a comedy, laugh riot, and a ‘comedy of errors’ which had nothing to do with the original ‘comedy of errors’. I am a huge fan of this movie and so is every member of my family. There is always a smile playing on the lips, waiting to turn into a burst of laughter, whenever we discover the movie on any channel. The comedy was in the scenes and dialogues. The movie had stand-out characters that have stayed in public memory after all the intervening 27 years.

Think of Deven Verma being hoodwinked by his ‘get-rich-quick-scheming’ son Aamir Khan (playing Amar) and you smile or grin. Specially when the son tells the father “main aaj bahut khush hoon” and the father replies “tu jab bhi khush hua hai mera kuch na kuch nuksaan hua hai” and proceeds to list a few incidents. Then we have the barber Jagdeep getting similar treatment from his son Salman Khan (playing Prem). The scene that happens between Mehmood (who plays a casting agent) and Jagdeep is another standout. One thing about this comedy movie was we had seasoned players like Deven Verma, Jagdeep, Mehmood and Aamir Khan who (imho) thought making faces (contorting is not the right word) and Salman Khan who thought saying ‘aila’ in a squeaky tone was comedy. The ladies were spared as they didn’t need to be comic as also the father character of Paresh Rawal. Shakti Kapoor’s character ‘crime-master Gogo’ was more comic than scary as was Paresh Rawal’s Teja (character). Crime-master Gogo’s oneliner (Takiya kalaam) “aaya hoon kuch na kuch leke jaoonga” used to be oft-quoted in my family. The story tried to create comedy by giving the male lead actors filmy names of Amar and Prem trying to pay tribute to the 70s classic.
To have an idea about the movie we should read this post which was written by SURPRISE! (re-visit the post to find out)

Tushar Bhatia was the music director of this movie which had 6 songs. As per this article two songs were deleted from the movie to give it a better look (I suppose). Majrooh Sultanpuri was the lyricist and Asha Bhonsle, Abhijeet, S P Balasubramanyam, were the playback singers with a few new names Behrouz Chatterjee, Mangal Singh, Vicky Mehta which were heard for the first time in Bollywood.

Today’s song has Salman Khan serenading the millionaire, heiress Raveena with a song and dance in the middle of the night but with a tiny “dholak” instead of a guitar or violin (as is the general norm for this kind of situations). It is only at the end of the song that Salman (Prem) realizes that the lady with him is Karisma and not Raveena. We have Amar (Aamir Khan) first thinking that Raveena is the one who is responding to Prem but his fears are laid to rest when he sees Raveena outside his window. Then we have Shehzad Khan (a spitting image of his father Ajit) and Viju Khote (playing helpers around the household) also enjoying this midnight entertainment.

Incidentally, the girls switch names, in the movie, to test prospective grooms so Karisma Kapoor who is the actual Raveena (daughter of the millionaire) introduces Raveena Tandon as Karisma (who is the daughter of the millionaire’s munim). So, there is a bit of confusion in the minds of Amar and Prem once the girls reveal their true names and identity. Hope the situation is clear and we now get on to the song which is sung by Asha (Tai) and SPB (Balu Sir)

With this post we also wish Lolo on turning a year younger. Lolo which is the pet name of Karisma Kapoor, the first person from the fifth generation of the Kapoor Khandan to step into Bollywood and carve a niche for herself. She made a name for herself enacting a variety of roles from plain inane to high voltage emotional characters. We saw her play a serious character in the song which was posted two years back. Today we will see her with a cute and endearing smile.

With the 300th post behind me, I can really get on with my regular song posts. I missed a few anniversary posts in November and December, but a few are coming up in the remaining days of December.

How does one start a birthday post for controversy’s favourite child? I have a little doubt whether he is controversy’s favourite child or controversy is his favourite child.

To be truthful, I stumbled upon this RFAK song link shared by someone on facebook. The songs of this movie and the movie itself has been kept fresh, not by frequent viewing on TV, but the songs which keep coming back to mind, with each subsequent song in the inevitable ‘eid release’ Salman Khan movies every passing year. I was an infrequent visitor to the theatre still in 2010. After ‘Dabangg’ came ‘Dabangg 2’ and ‘Dabangg 3’, to make the list of successful sequels.

I have discovered that Salman Khan’s full name is Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan. He is born on 27th December 1965, so he is turning 55 in 2020. That makes him 45 in 2010, when this movie ‘Dabangg’ released, which figures. A lot is there on the net and media about Salman Khan’s personal life and conduct, which has made him the favourite child of controversy. The media makes or breaks these people superstars or non-stars, so it is a two-sided coin. This show-biz is more murky waters now than it was, say, 50 years ago.

60 or 70 years ago, only the extremely poor were making their daughters join the film industry, as it was not known as a good profession. Very few girls from well to do families, or from the really noble families were working in the film industry. Even the filmy families who made it big would not allow their daughters or daughter-in-laws to work in films. Kapoor family is a case in point. Babita went against the family traditions and launched Karishma in films. But in recent decades things have changed a lot. It is no longer a case of question of survival for most of the stars or actors working in films and show business today. They are ready to go to whatever length they are required to earn name and fame and the resultant moolah. It is better not to judge anyone for their deeds and misdeeds. They need the media and the media needs them, so the circus goes on.

I would rather mention the positives, like Salman Khan’s charity work. Or the good unpretentious work he does to give back to the society. He does his bit, with or without media attention. There is a very good reason for his title as ‘bhai’. It is not just Salim Khan’s good offices that have taken him out of a few soups, that’s what I have heard.

Coming back to the song from ‘Dabangg’, it is two version song, one is a solo with chorus by Rahat Fateh Ali khan, second is a duet version by RFAK and Shreya Ghoshal.

Faaiz Anwar is the lyricist and composers are Sajid -Wajid. The duo Sajid-Wajid are borthers and sons of Sharafat Ali khan, a table player. Wajid was younger of the two and he expired on June 1, 2020, after he had a major operation for Kidney transplant in March 2020.

The song I am presenting is one of the best songs of year 2010. There was no Binaca geet mala then as there is no such thing now, but this song would have featured on such a programme. This song is unique that the mukhda is being sung by two different types of male choruses and I detect RFAK’s voice in both choruses, one a normal mode of singing and second in classical qawwali style. RFAK has vast invaluable experience of live singing with his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, as a chorus companion and singing alaaps during his long qawwali renditions. The experience shows in qawwali-cum-sugam sangeet songs like these, where the pitch is different for the solo version and the duet version.

I rather think these songs sung by RFAK were not actually composed by the music directors assigned. Most likely they were just credited to the music director of the film but were actually composed by RFAK himself, be it Himesh Reshammiya, Sajid-Wajid, Vishal-Shekhar or Vishal Bharadwaj. The quota was usually one song per film only.

The duet version song is picturized on Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha(daughter of Shatrughan Sinha). Both look good in their role play, as a police inspector and a poor pottery maker. The movie is making its debut in the blog, with this earthy and natural sounding song.

Today (4 may 2020) is a day when no notable HFM personality was born. But on this day, one person totally unconnected with HFM was born in a far away land 365 years ago. He would invent a musical instrument that has played a vital role in the development of HFM. Movies of 1950s and 1960s were not complete if this instrument did not appear in at least in one song. In one movie, this instrument has even appeared in four songs !

The instrument that we are talking about is Piano. It was invented in 1709 by Bartolomeo Cristofori di Francesco(4 May 1655 – 27 January 1731), was an Italian maker of musical instruments.

Nine of his pianos still survive. Three of them are preserved in three museums, one in New York (Metropolitan Museum), Rome (Museo Nazionale degli Strumenti Musicali) and Leipzig university( Museum of musical instruments)

Hindi movies have had hundred on Piano songs in it. This blog has as many as 147 Piano songs. The earliest is from 1938. Pianon songs came into their own in HFM from late 1940s and ruled the roost in HFm till late 1970s. After that, Piano songs became few and far between. Pianos, which depicted class and prosperity of the character playing it in those days. From 1970s onwards, actors started sporting guitar instead. Guitar may have looked jazzy and spectacular, but it disd not have the old world charm of a Piano.

Most Piano songs of note (pun unintended) have already been covered in the blog.

When I searched for Piano songs on internet, I came across a few writeups, that discussed well known Piano songs. All of them have already been covered in the blog. When I went through one of these writeups (posted on 5 october 2016), I found the description of these songs familiar. I realised that the description was very much mine ! When I checked up these songs in the blog, I realised that this article had copied and pasted contents of the writeup of Piano songs in the blog ! For instance, my description of “Bhaabhi”(1938) Piano song goes like

This song is picturised as a piano song. P Jairaj is playing the piano and this song is sung by Renuka Devi. Her father V H Desai looks on and later the villain Rama Sukul too comes in and watches her sing with disapproval.

You will find this description faithfully copied and pasted in that article.

My description of “Andaaz”(1949) piano song, “hum aaj kahin dil kho baithe”, was

Dilip Kumar sits at the piano at night and sings this song. And Nargis arrives with her pet dog and watches Dilip Kumar sing the song, clutching her dog like a pillow.

This description is faithfully copied and pasted in that writeup.

Like this, all the 25 Piano songs described there copies contents from this blog, without giving credit. How very cheap of this so called blogger. I have posted a comment in that blog which is unlikely to see the light of the day, of course.

Coming to Piano songs, I quickly realised that these songs had gone the way of qawwaali songs, cabarat songs etc- viz they had vanished as the golden era of HFM drew to a close.

One can still find a few piano songs here and there, but these songs are nowhere near the same class of Piano songs that were created during the golden era of HFM.

After some frenetic search, I have been able to locate one as yet unrepresented Piano song. It is from a “recent” movie. Even the movie, a musical blockbuster, is not yet represented in the blog.

Today, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the man who gave us Piano, here is a piano song from “Saajan”(1991). Yes, this movie, the biggest box office hit of the year 1991 was not there in the blog till now. This movie, which was produced by K C Bokadia and directed by Lawrence Desouza had Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Salman Khan, Kader Khan, Reema Laagoo, Laxmikant Berde, Ekta Sohini, Anjana Mumtaz, Dinesh Hingoo, Yunus Parvez, Raju Shreshtha, Tej Sapru, Vikas Anand etc in it.

I had fond memories of watching this movie in Vadodara in 1991, where I was attending a course those days.

The movie had ten songs in it.

Here is the first song from “Saajan”(1991) to appear in the blog. This song has male and female solo versions sung by S P Balasubhramanyam and Alka Yagnik respectively. Sameer is the lyricist. Music is composed by Nadeem Shrawan.

It is the female version, picturised on stage, with Madhuri Dixit near a piano, that makes this song a Piano song. Unlike Piano songs of yore, some sort of mist engulfs her and the piano. I wonder what the director was trying to achieve with this kind of picturisation.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the creator of Piano, here is this memorable Piano song from 1991.

With this song, “Saajan”(1991) makes its debut in the blog.

Hullo Atuldom

Let me wish a very Happy Deepawali to one and all. Let the festival light up our lives with lots of positivity love and peace. Let the new Samvat bring in prosperity all around. In all this let us try and make the life of everyone around us happy too. Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi and Laxmi Pooja starts the festive week which goes on to Bhai Dooj and ends with Chat Pooja. May there be no issues of weight gain for anyone 😉

Now there are other things that group “Atulites” is celebrating today. One of us is having his birthday. Also, birthday wishes to the daughter of another atulite. God bless them with lots of health and happiness.

A few months back we had a party song for Atulji’s birthday which asked “where’s the party tonight?”; don’t remember the reply. But here is the next party and it is a song on Bhai with Kareena Kapoor Khan in tow and the whole “mohalla” joining in the celebration. As it is the whole country is in festival mood and this song fits in for the occasion.

A confession – I knew the existence of this song which was written by Shabbir Ahmed and composed by Pritam Chakraborty. But I hadn’t heard it completely. Neither in the movie nor on any music channel. As I sat to write it for the post and heard it, I knew this was a song which our birthday boy will love as it underlines his quality of being a great host. Specially the line “aao jahaaz mein ya bharke truck se”; he will definitely say “aaj ki party meri taraf se”. Another thing which I realized is that this is the end credits- song of the 2015 Kareena Kapoor- Salman Khan blockbuster “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” which was directed by Kabir Khan. The song features the entire cast of the movie which includes Nawazuddin Siddique, Sharat Saxena, the child – who played the ‘mute central character’- Harshaali Malhotra, and all the actors who played parents to Kareena and Harshaali. Much like the whole of Atuldom wishing our Atulite and Daughter of the other Atulite on their birthdays. Gang work 😉

I am sure the regular followers of this blog have guessed who is the Atulite I am wishing. He was one of the first follower and farmaish(er) of the blog [sorry for the hinglish word and wrong grammar.] He is a doston ka dost. An occasional NRA – non-resident Atulite. A very gracious host and then he also is a fan of HFM thanks to having spent a small part of his life in that sphere of the country where Hindi films were the only source of entertainment. A Rafi fan who is addicted to Kishore Kumar’s voice too. Fan of Rajesh Khanna who learnt to love Amitabh too. Over the years his love for Sahir Ludhianvi’s work has grown that by no means, means that he doesn’t appreciate other lyricists. He loves to occasionally slip into the Punjabi way of speaking and loves to hear Urdu in songs and poetry. I am speaking of Rajaji. Wishing our dear Rajaji a very Happy Birthday.

I don’t know much about the daughter who has her birthday today. Don’t even know her name but all the best to her too. I hope, she too, will like today’s song. May she have lots of dreams and may they come true.

Happy Deepawali once again to all!!!

Blog Day : 3963 Post No. : 15041

It is human nature that on every important occasion and event in life, we recall all the people who had ever crossed our lives and made a difference to it. I had a similar experience during the last year. I felt like I wanted to get in touch with people from way back as far as my childhood. I met people who were our neighbours when my daughter was born. I wanted to invite all those who knew her when she was very little and had showered prayers on her when she was not even aware of those blessings. Sometimes we lose touch with people as they move away or we move away. People who were neighbours and our kids used to play together. All of them had touched our lives, affected us in a good or bad way. Mostly in the essential goodness of human nature it was well intentioned.

For us working women, there is this space in the heart for those who looked after our children when we are away at work. Some such people, neighbour and acquaintances, I was able to contact and invite for the wedding. One of such who were neighbour of my parents and distantly related to my father, attended my daughter’s wedding with her extended family. Sometimes the bonds of shared memories and events in life transcend all constraints of time and distance. When that aunty came on stage to meet the bride and groom, that moment the day of my daughter’s birth flashed in my eyes.

Early in the morning that day the aunty was there to see us off when I was leaving for the hospital. Later on my daughter was born in caesarean section. That evening she came to see us in the hospital. I remembered talking to her about my daughter and the scary experience when the doctor told us that she cannot find the baby’s heartbeat which resulted in caesarean section. I started crying and she also started crying and comforting me. I also remember telling her that all I want from the Almighty now is that “mere bachche ka naseeb achha ho”.

A few weeks after the delivery I had high fever and suffered an epileptic fit. My daughter was a few weeks old, and my mother who had not seen anything like this thought I was dead. She says she kept looking at me and my daughter and wailing. Thankfully, I survived the fit with the timely help of doctors in the neighbourhood and basic first aid given by neighbours. Even during this time this aunty and her family was there on hand to lend a helping hand any which way.

Actually, the above memories had a trigger. I had a five day training schedule in the second week of April. During the training we were made to listen to all the same routine work procedure, rules and regulations, which we have been finding, using and following since day one 🙂 . Actually these procedures are all basically based on common sense and logic, I feel. Difficulty comes when something out of the ordinary crops up then we have the facility of looking up in the proper book and finding the instructions to deal with the situation in the appropriate manner.

During the training one day, a fellow participant suffered an epileptic fit, while the session was going on. A friend of her said that it happens to her from time to time. With the first aid, which thankfully some ladies knew, she was all right after a while. But all this reminded me to my experience of which I personally have no recollection. I know only what I was told afterwards. Seeing it happening to another person is actually more scaring.

The training got over on Friday just in time to enable me and my husband to leave for the trip to Rajasthan as planned on the Saturday. Since this was a first time for us, we had a lot to cover, see and enjoy in one week. It was not enough certainly with so many placed to see. We managed to see quite enough to want do the touristy thing again sometime and see the rest of the places. With so many historical places, forts, palaces and museums etc. it really is the tourists delight as Avinash ji has said in his post – “Mhaare Rajasthan Maa. . .“. I was really delighted to see the various red stone carved palaces and embellishments and some of those inlay work in ‘Sang-e-marmar’ is also visible in places. I have not seen too many such historical places so far, but I was able to detect some superimposition inside the monuments and outside the museum or palace areas. Sadly that is modernity or commercialisation for you. There is an influx of shops and touristy restaurants too, which might be commercial necessity for all I know.

You see the historical monuments are not humans and have no sense of self preservation. From what I learnt most of those places are private property and the owners are free to utilise them. The most well preserved buildings have been converted to star hotels. Good for them as they become commercially viable and will survive longer. At least the superbly carved Mehrangad Fort is a World Heritage site and deservedly.

In a palace shop in Rajasthan I saw a bottled ‘Mitti Ki Khushboo’ fragrance. ‘Mitti ki khusbhboo’ bottled and patented:) . I heard a guide saying that ‘when the first rain drops fall on the earth, this is that mehek”. Indeed…. we should get ‘Shameem’ also in the bottle one day I hope. After all hopes and aspirations are totally free of cost.

Since the day this trip was planned and looked like it will finally happen, I have been remembering the song – “Nainon Mein Badra Chhaaye“.

Without actually going to Udaipur it is possible to visualise it through these songs. I came back from the place humming this song. The panorama surrounding the lake still looks exactly the same as is seen in the song. That is something at least. Since than I have found another song from ‘Mera Saaya’ (1966) – “Nainon Waali Ne Haaye Mera Dil Loota” featuring the scenes of Lake Pichchola of Udaipur. This is no exaggeration, the lakes and surrounding Aravali range is real beautiful site.

I found a song which is like revisiting the places /forts and music and sounds of Rajasthan in the film ‘Ham Dil De Chuke Sanam’ (1999). The majestic Mehrangadh fort is visible in some frames in the song. This amalgamation of folk and classical music is composed by Ismail Darbar and lyricists is Mehboob. The singers are Ustad Sultan Khan, Shankar Mahadevan and Kavita Krishnamoorthy. Quite a ‘bhaari bharkam’ trio what with the heavy voices and names :). In the video of the extended song many members of the cast are seen, notably the late Zohra Sehgal. Vikram Gokhle, Salman Khan and Aishwarya are singing it on screen.

Last word: What I brought back from Rajasthan is the sights and sounds of the locals talent and motivated enough in preserving the originality of the folk music and songs. I want to write more about Rajasthan, but this post is quite long now, so will keep the rest of my thoughts for some other post.

Blog Day : 3561 Post No. : 14279

Today’s song is from the blockbuster of the 90’s decade, ‘Hum aapke hain kaun’-94 (HAHK). The song ‘Didi tera devar deewana’ is sung by Lata Mangeshkar, S P Balasubramanyam and chorus. The Dev Kohli song is composed by Ramlaxman.

Many of the readers may find it difficult to digest that this comparatively ‘New’ song is discussed by a person who usually writes on ‘antiques ‘, i.e. songs from films of 30s and 40s. A solid jump of 50+ years ? Wonder pe Thunder ! You need not be surprised.

It is not that I do not like new films or songs, but nowadays everything about these films or songs is discussed on Print and TV media so much, that there is hardly anything left to write about. In any case, I have discussed earlier many songs from films of 80s,90s and 2000 and after that also. For example a song from film Lagaan-2001 was discussed, also from Zubeida-2000, Chameli ki shaadi-88 etc were discussed by me. In this connection, my favourite thinking is “Not all that was made before 1970 was good and not all that is made after 1970 is bad “.

These days I have lost patience to sit through 2 and more hours to watch a film, but I do have some new films listed as my favourites too. ( I saw these films in instalments,on TV). In recent times, few films impressed me no end. Film ‘Hum apke hai kaun'(hereafter called HAHK)-94 is one of them. I genuinely liked the film and few of its songs. The film came as a Puff of fresf air amidst the cluster of third rate meaningless movies. This Rajashri film totally fulfilled its purpose of clean entertainment. Though established in 1947, Rajashri films’ first noteworthy film was Aarti-62, followed by Dosti-64. From the 60s to the 80s, they gave many successful clean family entertaining films.

In 1988, Rajashri brought an era of Love stories that crossed class barriers. Film ‘Maine pyar kiya’-88 was a love story that touched hearts of youngsters. The film introduced a young Director Sooraj Barjatya ( grandson of the founder of RF) and also brought a star Salman Khan to make him a Superstar. It was his just second movie in career.

The same team came back in 5 years with HAHK and the film made all other hits like Sholey and Jai Santoshi Maa look like ‘also ran ‘! Few people know that HAHK is a remake of Rajashri’s own film “Nadiya ke paar-82”, starring Sachin, Sadhna Singh,Inder Thakur, Mitali etc etc. ( Inder Thakur died in Air India crash soon after.)

As is well known, the famous painter M F Hussain had crush on Madhuri. He saw film HAHK 85 times-as per a report in Indian Express (variously differing in other news portals from 60 to 90 times !). He then made a film ‘Gajgamini ‘-2000, with Madhuri. As expected, the film was a disaster at the Box Office. He also made lot many paintings of Madhuri ( she took payments per sitting).

As per a report in Indian Express, Madhuri got paid an amount of 2.75 crores for HAHK role of Nisha. It was also the first film to cross a collection of 1 Billion. With an investment of just 43 million, the film grossed 3.1 Billion in all. In 1994, mind you ! It was described as “the biggest Block Buster of Modern Era”. The film won Film Fare awards for Best Film, Best Director and of course best Heroine. It bagged the National award for Best popular film providing Wholesome Entertainment.

Why did the film become so captivating for the Indian audience ? The reasons could be…..

1. We like big business families with big houses with big lawns, so that Cricket can be played.
2. We love big weddings with all details, games, dance and music.
3. Nowadays, as a result of HAHK, no wedding is complete without Dance and music.
4. We love to see beautiful girls and handsome naughty boys falling in Love.
5. Comedy plots are a must.
6. Interesting characters like Anupam kher and Bindu.
7. New meaning for coughing…for young boys and girls.
8. Chhup Chhup ke Pyaar !
9. Active and clever Dog.
10. A Happy Ending !

Madhuri Dixit is my favourite actress ( but I am not MFHussain, please). Once I had a pleasure to get introduced to her when I went to a relative who stayed on the first floor of the same building where Madhuri stayed on second floor. She had come to them like an ordinary Marathi Mulgi in casual dress and still looked beautiful. Madhuri was born on 15-5-1967 and her first film was Abodh-84. She acted in 71 films. She came in limelight with her dance on song ‘Ek do teen…’from Tezaab-88. It was choreographed by Saroj khan. Same year she did a controversial scene with Vinod Khanna in film “Dayavaan”-88. In 1993, she created waves with her dance and song “Choli ke peeche..” in film Khalnayak. This too was choreographed by Saroj khan. Her last film released is ‘Total Dhamaal”-2018, directed by Inder Kumar.

Salman khan ( Abdul Rasheed Salim Salman khan) was born on 27-12-1965. Except for his first 2 films, I never liked him, as an actor and a human being. That of course is besides the point. His films mostly run full houses. Till today he acted in 106 films, his latest being Loveratri-2018. 2 films are slated for release in 2019 already. After success of these 2 initial films, Salman khan thought that the Filmy name of ‘ PREM ‘ was lucky for him. Subsequently, till 2015, he has used name PREM in 15 films. ( by the way, Amitabh Bachhan used the name VIJAY in 20 films till 2010, Jeetendra used it in 18 films and Mithun used it in 16 films.)

The film’s music played a major role in its success. The Music Director was Ramlaxman. Originally, it was a team of two brothers- elder was Surendra and the Younger was Vijay Patil. They used to be a part of professional orchestras, doing public shows all over Maharashtra. The popular and very successful Comedian of Marathi cinema- Dada Knodake was impressed with the duo and offered them his film, ” Pandu Havaldar-75″. It was Dada Kondake who gave them the name Ram Laxman since they were brothers. Film’s music became very popular and they gave music to Dada Kondke’s 11 films in a row, from 75 to 82. Their first break for Hindi films came in 1977 with Agent Vinod.

The elder brother expired immediately after their first film itself, due to Jaundice. Vijay decided to continue the name Ramlaxman. His first major break in Hindi came after 25 films. ‘ Maine Pyar Kiya”-89 was a Musical hit film. Within next 5 years and another 25 films he gave music to HAHK. This time he hit Gold. The success was unprecedented and long lasting. Till 2016, he gave music to 61 Hindi films, with 433 songs to his credit. Side by side, he was doing Marathi films also. From 1975 to 2011 i.e. in 36 years, he did 37 Marathi films.

The story of Hum Apke hai kaun-94 was–

It is a very simple plot. Mohnish Behl ( Rajesh Nath) and Salman ( Prem Nath)are brothers raised by their bachelor uncle Alok Nath ( Kailash Nath). Alok Nath arranges an engagement for Mohnish Behl with Renuka Shahane ( Pooja), daughter of his old friends Anupam Kher ( Prof. Sidharth Caudhary) and Reema Lagoo ( Mrs. Chaudhary). At the engagement, Salman meets Renuka’s younger sister Madhuri ( Nisha). Through the engagement, marriage, and then preparations for the birth of Renuka and Mohnish’s first child, Salman and Madhuri secretly flirt and become closer and closer. Finally, they reveal their love to Renuka who immediately approves and declares her plan to arrange their engagement (in her role as the oldest female in Salman’s family). But before she can tell anyone else, she dies after a tragic fall, leaving her son motherless. In an effort to provide a mother for the baby, Alok suggests to Anupam and Reema that Mohnish should marry Madhuri. Madhuri at first misunderstands them to mean Salman. However, even when she learns the truth, she decides not to say anything as it has brought so much joy to everyone to plan this wedding. Salman understands and accepts her decision. At the last moment, the truth is revealed, through a Dog Redo ( Tuffy ). The families understand immediately the purpose of their sacrifice and applaud them for making it, but insist that it is purposeless, Madhuri can move into the household as an aunt rather than a mother to this orphaned baby. Happy Ending with another wedding.

Today’s song ” Didi tera devar deewana” was easily the most popular song of the film ( though I like ” Paise de do joote le lo” more), out of the 14 songs the film had. This number (14) was much above the average number of film songs per film during a period from 1950 onwards- that is about 45 years. The film too was longer than average films. It was 3 hours and 43 minutes running time. Very few people know that this song was ‘ inspired’ ( read copied) from the song ” Saare Nabian”, sung by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The song tune was forced upon the composer by the producers and the director. The film’s album sold like hot cakes.

Let us now enjoy the teasing song, which is easily one of the longest songs spanning 7m and 38 seconds.
