Hullo Atuldom

“Bansi Birju” (1972) was produced & directed by Prakash Verma; according to sites on the internet he was associated with two other films Dev Anand’s ‘Lootmaar’ as writer & ‘I Love You’ as director in 1985 (must say I have not heard of the second film which had Rajan Sippy & Sahila Chadda in the cast).

“Bansi Birju” had music by flutist, composer, choreographer, musicologist, poet & writer Vijay Raghav Rao. He had worked in ‘Bhuvan Shome’ (1969) & ‘Gandhi’ (1982). The lyricist for “Bansi Birju” was Yogesh Gaud for songs in the voices of Vani Jayaram, Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey, and Chitra Dutta. A little googling gave me the answer that Chitra Dutta was born as Chitra Shome but is known worldwide as Chitra Singh the better half of ghazal singer Jagjit Singh.

“Bansi Birju” had seven songs of which the following three are on the blog

Song Date of post
Nainon ke ye do panchhee 11 October 2012
Na koi paisa na ilm 20 March 2015
Haaye re sainyya mose kaahe kare barjoree 11 October 2022/td>

“Bansi Birju” had Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri, Mehmood Jr., Ramesh deo, K.N.Singh, Jamal, Yunus Parvez, Asha Chandra, Rajan Haksar, Anwar Ali, Nigar Sultana, Amrit Patel, Kalpana Diwan, Maruti jr., etc in its cast. I have seen or heard the songs of this movie but the plot line, as per IMDB.com, says that it was the story of Bansi (Jaya Bhadhuri) & Birju (Amitabh Bachchan) who get married in a village; but the villagers find out that Bansi is a nautch girl (courtesan). But what I read on IMDB doesn’t tell how the movie meanders to the end. I have never seen this film only heard of it being the first film that Amitabh & Jaya acted together in. It seems Jr. Mehmood was added to the film, in a special appearance.

I was looking up films with Jaya Bhadhuri (who went on to become Jaya Bachchan) and saw that this film that made its debut on the blog in 2012 on Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday is far -very far from having all its songs on-board.
Why was I looking up for Jaya Bhadhuri films; well to use the associated song to showcase her talent on 9th April which happens to be the birth date of this talented actress who is an alumni of FTII. This is what I read about this performer on the internet (and I quote):

“some people are born to perform. Others are born to simply be. Jaya Bhaduri, (long before she was Bachchan), belonged to the latter species. Having worked with Satyajit Ray, she could very confidently shtand in front of a camera, blink once, and convince you she was a whole human story. No glycerine tears, no tragic violin in the background, no flailing arms — just honesty.”

I will not call myself a Jaya Bhadhuri fan but I simply love her work- pre sabbatical as well as post sabbatical. I loved the way she smiles and it that reaches her eyes, the way she says ‘bol diya’ to her husband – played by Amitabh Bachchan in “Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham”, or the way she portrays sorrow in ‘Fiza’ when she is missing her son. I was a fan of her simple girl, long haired look. I seem to have seen most of the films she has acted in before 1981 after which she chose to be off-screen.

Wishing Jaya Bhadhuri (she will always be that for her fans) who, in an era when heroines were expected to arrive gift-wrapped in bouffants, eyeliner, and yards of chiffon, appeared in a simple cotton salwar-kameez, carrying the air of a stubborn schoolgirl, A Very Very Happy Birthday. She is inching towards 80- unbelievable!!!!

Song-Aaya koi khayaal to ghabra ke ro diye (Bansi Birju)(1972) Singer-Vani Jairam, Lyricist-Yogesh, MD-Vijay Raghav Rao

Lyrics

aa re na
ga ma pa dha ni ee
pa dha ma pa
aa aa aa aa aa aa

aaya koi khayaal to ghabra ke ro diya
dil ko hua malaal to ghabraa ke ro diye ae
aaya koi khayaal to

muddat ke baad bhoolee see pehchaan kee tarah
muddat ke baad bhoolee see pehchaan kee tarah
is zindagee ne dekh ke anjaan kee tarah
pppchha jo humse haal to ghabraa ke ro diye ae
aaya koi khayaal to

shiqwa bhee hum karen to karen kya naseeb se
shiqwa bhee hum karen to karen kya naseeb se
har baar jab bahaar ne aa kar kareeb se
khud ko liya sambhaal to ghabra ke ro diye ae
aaya koi khayaal to

daaman hamaara bhar diya
pahle to khaar se
daaman hamaara bhar diya
pahle to khaar se
jab hum tadap uthhe to zamaana ne pyaar se
dee phool kee misaal to ghabraa ke ro diye ae
aaya koi khayaal to
ghabraa ke ro diye
dil ko hua malaal to
ghabraa ke ro diye ae
aaya koi khayaal to
