“Amrit Manthan”(1934) was directed by V Shantaram for Prabhat Films Company, Poona. It had Chandramohan, Nalini Tarkhad, Shanta Apte, Suresh Babu, Kelkar, Kulkarni, Desai, Mane etc in it.

“Baag e Misar”(1934) was produced and directed by J B H Wadia for Wadia Movietone, Bombay. The movie had Feroz Dastoor, Master Mohammad, Boman Shroff, Miss Padma, Miss Jamuna, Jal Khambhata, S Nazir, Minu Cooper etc in it.

‘Bhakt Prahlad’ was directed by K P Bhave for Saraswati Cinetone, Poona (now Pune), directed by KP Bhave. The story was adapted from the traditional scriptures, by MG Rangnekar, and the screenplay was written by KP Bhave. The movie had Mohan Karve (child artist) playing the title role. The movie also had Krishnakant Saalvi, Ratnaprabha, Shakuntala, Ved Pathak, Rama Pathak, Varne, Javdekar, Bhosle, Vasant Pehalwan etc in it.

We have been discussing the statistics of Hindi movie songs over the years and we have so far reached upto 1934. As a result of this analysis and follow up action (in the form of posting the balance available songs from those years), we now have posted almost all available songs from 1931 to 1933, with just two songs each from 1932 and 1933 still left.

It is 1934 and the fledgling Hindi talkie film industry is in its fourth year only. The volume of business is slowly continuing to grow. In the three years prior i.e. 1931-33, a total of 161 films were certified by the Censor Board. 1934 saw a sharp increase in production and in all, 120 new films were certified in this year. And this production is coming not just from Bombay. Of course, a major share is produced in Bombay, but almost a quarter of this number comes from the production studios in Calcutta. Then come Pune, Kolhapur and Lahore – really just a handful. But still signifying that the production of Hindi films was a focus at multiple centers around the subcontinent.

The decade of 1930s will continue to remain a shaded mystery for the lovers of Hindi film music. In the decade when the Hindi film song was born and took its first fledgling steps, the creators and the keepers of this art probably did not envision the significance of this new medium and expansive influence it would go on to exercise on an entire culture, generation after generation. When the films, and more so, the talking films came into being, their predecessor was the various forms of folk theatre and formal stage drama. From time immemorial, since these art forms have existed, these have simply been live performances, with no thought or effort applied to somehow catalog and preserve them. The play was written, and its script was the primary record of its existence.

“Actress”(1934), also known as “Bambai Ki Mohini”(1934) was directed by Balwant Bhatt for Prakash Pictures, Bombay. THis was the debut movie for this production house. The movie had Miss Panna, Miss Alaknanda, Bachhu, Kashinath, Lallubhai, Harishchandra etc in it.
