The Wonderful Sounds of 1930s – 3
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

It is 1934 and the fledgling Hindi talkie film industry is in its fourth year only.  The volume of business is slowly continuing to grow.  In the three years prior i.e. 1931-33, a total of 161 films were certified by the Censor Board.  1934 saw a sharp increase in production and in all, 120 new films were certified in this year.  And this production is coming not just from Bombay.  Of course, a major share is produced in Bombay, but almost a quarter of this number comes from the production studios in Calcutta.  Then come Pune, Kolhapur and Lahore – really just a handful.  But still signifying that the production of Hindi films was a focus at multiple centers around the subcontinent.

I have selected today’s song from the film ‘Maharani’.  The information that I provide here is taken from the Geet Kosh.  The Geet Kosh entry lists 14 songs in this film.  After checking with the various sources, I am so far able to trace only one song of this film as being available.  Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji of Jodhpur has kindly shared this with me, and I am today uploading this rarity.

The film is produced under the banner of Gandharv Cinetone, Bombay.  It is a period costume drama that is directed by Baburao Patel.  The name of the music director is listed as N Chaphekar.  I checked, and I find that this name appears for the first time on this blog.  I tried to find more information about him, but could not find any material on him on the online sources.  I checked the other significant reference, i.e. the book ‘Dhunon Ki Yatra’ by Pankaj Raag.  I could locate a very brief reference, just a two sentence paragraph that lists this film, and that’s about it.

The Geet Kosh does not list a name for the song writer.  But there is one additional information that can be interesting.  Apparently the story of this film is adapted from an original, probably written in Urdu.  Maybe the source could originally have been a stage play.  It is possible that the songs listed in Geet Kosh are coming directly from the original source.  The name of the original author is given as H Khatib.  And the name of the person who adapted this original story material to Hindi is given as Pt Indra Chandra.  Now this latter name is definitely very very familiar as a song writer par excellence, from that period and even later.  So now, both possibilities can be there, but I will not pick any, in absence of any other corroborating source.

The cast of actors is listed as Padma Devi, Shireen Bano, Raja Pandit, Mubarak Merchant, Mubarak Ali, N Chaphekar, DB Surve, and S Babu Rao.  The foot note given with this film’s details says that this song is picturized on screen, on Shireen Bano and Raja Pandit.  Given that we are in 1934 and the playback singing technology is still a year away, it may be safe to surmise that these two actors have sung for themselves on screen.  I will go ahead with this surmise.

The song itself is a fun exchange between what seems to be a pair of a newly love-struck lovebirds.  The charming thing about this song is the choice of phrases that the songwriter has used.  Sound somewhat pedestrian, but still a touch of naughtiness and a lot of fun too.

So listen to this ‘teasing’ song from more than 80 years ago.  And know that over the decades, the content of wooing and ‘nok jhonk’ activities has not changed materially.  Enjoy.

Song – Preet Kaise Karoon Pardesi Piya (Maharani) (1934) Singer – Shireen Bano, Raja Pandit, Lyrics – [Unattributed], MD – N Chaphekar

Lyrics

preet kaise karoon
preet kaise karoon pardesi piya
mori baali umar na chhed rasiya
mori baali umar na chhed rasiya
preet kaise karoon
preet kaise karoon pardesi piya

preet kaise karoon
preet kaise karoon pardesi piya
mori baali umar na chhed rasiya
mori baali umar na chhed rasiya

abhi to thumak thumak paas paas aate ho
abhi to thumak thumak paas paas aate ho
pighal pighal ke abhi mom baney jaate ho
pighal pighal ke abhi mom baney jaate ho
zaraa sa kaam banaa
haan zaraa sa kaam banaa
aankhen phir dikhaawoge
zaraa sa kaam banaa
aankhen phir dikhaawoge
preet kaise karoon
preet kaise karoon pardesi piya
mori baali umar na chhed rasiya
mori baali umar na chhed rasiya

preet kaise karoon
preet kaise karoon pardesi piya

Sudhir ji,

There is a subtle hint in the link given below that this song may have been written by Pandit Indra Chandra. The writer mentions another song of this film ‘saawan ghan barse chaatak kyun tarse’ in the context of the song writing style of Pandit Indra Chandra.

Sudhir ji,

Any song from the 30s or the 40s is a feast for me. Thanks you,Sudhir ji.

N.Chaphekar’s full name was Nanasaheb Chaphekar or Shankar Neelkanth Chaphekar. He was a singer actor on Marathi stage. He came to know the Karnataki sisters as they were acting and singing in Vani Vilas Natak Company’s dramas in and around Belgaon,Hubli,Dharwad and Kolhapur. he suggested them to go to Bombay for better prospects. Amirbai karnataki went later, but Gohar karnataki went with Chaphekar to Bombay where she stayed with him. According to his memoirs in Marathi,he used to visit several studios in search of roles for her. She got into Bhavnani films at Rs.800/- pm salary.
Gohar probably got a baby girl also from him. her name was Asha amma or Asha bi. This girl was living with Gauhar till her death.
N. Chaphekar gave music to one more film “Mera Watan”-1939,along with another composer named Hindalekar. This is listed in HFGK,but not mentioned in ‘Dhunon ki Yatra’by Pankaj Raag.

This is additional information for you.
