Nanubhai Vakil (B.A., LL.B.) was an old timer in Indian film industry who commenced his filmy career as a director with a silent film in 1929. By 1932, he had directed as many as 21 silent films. His first talkie film as a director was ‘Narsinh Mehta’ (1932) which also happened to be the first talkie film in Gujarati. He has directed over 50 Hindi films most of which belonged to action, stunts, fantasy and costume genres of films. He directed his last Hindi film, ‘Alam Ara’ (1971) which he had earlier directed in 1956. ‘Kal Hamaaraa Hai’ (1959) was produced by K Amarnath and was directed by S K Prabhakar. The film’s story and the impression of the film have been well covered in the recent two articles on the film in the Blog. So, I will not repeat the same. Suffice to say here that the film was inspired from then Government’s efforts to improve the economic condition of the people of India through Five-Year Plans. However, there is a need to weed out corruption, anti-social elements and the social injustice. In these efforts, citizens have also some duties to perform, that is, to follow the path of honesty and hard work with the positive attitude.

Today’s song is from an obscure film Deep Jalta Rahe-1959.

I said ‘obscure film’ because no one remembers this film today. Actually this film was made by a well known banner like Filmistan, it was directed by a skilled director like Datta Dharmadhikari, music was by Roshan and the cast too had good actors. Still, the film remained a flop at the Box office. The reason was its story. The mid 50’s onwards the period was when the people looked at the films as entertainment with lilting music. This film had neither of these. Perhaps the makers forgot that films with a tragic end, separation of lovers and a weak story by current standards was not accepted by the audience.

Today’s song is from the film Satta Bazar-1959.

The 50’s decade was full of films which had ‘Family’ as the main focus in their stories. Relationship importance, Values’ germination in the youngsters, denouncing social evils and bad habits etc. were the story essentials in many films. Use of western music in films increased and the audience got a variety of music presentations to please them. In short, films truly became Entertainment. Let’s take a look at what was the film scene in the year 1959….

Today’s song is from the social film Minister-1959.

The 1950s and the early 60s was the period in which the Hindi film industry churned out films which tried to glorify the impractical approaches to real problems, under the guise of Indian traditions. This was in line with what Nehru espoused as Socialism. Unfortunately, it took the Indian public farther from reality and instead of advancing, we went back another two decades. It was only after the war with China in 1962 and demise of Nehru in 1964, the wheels turned the right way slowly after winning the war of 1965 with Pakistan, under the leadership of Shastri ji, India knew and understood what was necessary for the country to progress. After Indira Gandhi took over and implemented certain strong measures, the influence on Indian people changed for the better.
