hullo to all in atuldom

We are at 12090 songs at the time of writing this. We have covered 3403 movies in the nearly eight years of this blog’s existence. 781 movies have all their songs covered. So when I was looking for a song featuring an old time music director/ singer on the occasion of his birthday today I was in for a surprise. Today (16 june 2016) is Hemant Kumar’s 96th birth anniversary.

“Anand Math” (1952) is a novel written by Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay which was first published in 1882. This novel served as a major source of inspiration for Indian freedom fighters against the British rulers. The British rulers banned this novel and this ban was lifted only after India gained independence. “Vandematram”, a song contained in the novel became Indian’s national song.

“Vande Mataram” is perhaps the oldest of all the patriotic songs of India. It was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (1838-1894) as a part of his novel “Anand Math” in the 19th century. This song became a national song among many nationalists, and it so alarmed the British rulers that this novel was banned.
