What I knew about “Taraanaa” (1951) was that the movie had Dilip Kumar and Madhubala in lead roles. But was that all ? there was more to it than just these two.

Here is a bicycle song from an obscure movie called “Zamaana” (1957). The song is picturised on Ameeta and Kamaljit (later better remembered as Waheeda Rehman’s husband). This song is a duet, mostly sung by Asha Bhonsle, with some male voice too. I have no idea about the male voice. It sounds like G M Durrani, but then he was no longer around in 1957 I think. The singer could well be Kamaljit himself. (PS- I have later read somewhere that it was Kamaljit himself).

One reason could be that the picturised version is often curtailed while editing the movie. But the main reason for the difference between picturised version and audio version is more technical. In olden days, it was technically not possible to record a song once and use it for audio as well as picturised versions. So those days the same song used to be recorded twice- once for the picturisation and once for the audio recording. So one could find some slight, and sometimes, more than slight differences in the two versions of the same song.

As far as Bollywood music lovers are concerned, most of them like songs that are “light” in nature, rather than the heavy duty stuff (viz classical music based). But there are classical music based songs that are so nicely created that one loves to listen to such songs.

Suraiyya, who ruled the roost as am actor-singer gradually ran out of steam in 1950s. The fact that she would sing only for herself meant that as her demand as an actress fell, she stopped getting singing offers as well.

There have been several movies called “Aarzoo”. There was one “Aarzoo” in 1966 where Shankar Jaikishan’s hit music had helped the movie become a big box office success. There was another movie of this name that was released in 1951. This movie had songs of different genre and they too had become popular in their times.
