This is a story of the only son of a wealthy jagirdar ( feudal land owner) Choudhary Fazal Mohammed and Sardar Begum, one of his wives. The jagirdar had almost deserted Sardar Begum but he wanted his only son in his custody for which he was prepared to pay a handsome monetary compensation to his estranged wife. But she was not prepared to part with her son. The matter went to the court and the judge asked their 9 year old son to make a choice as to whether he would stay with his father or mother. He had to make a choice between a wealthy father and a poor mother who was facing difficulties in sustaining on a day to day basis. The young boy preferred his poor mother to his wealthy father. In preferring to stay with his poor mother, the young boy may have perhaps made a statement of intent to his father that ‘tu itnaa ameer nahin banaa abba ki tu apne bête ko khareed sake’ – a similar type of dialogue used in the film ‘Deewaar’ (1975). The boy was Abdul Hayee later known as Sahir Ludhianvi.

“Samundar” (1957) was a P N Films production where P N Stood for Premnath. The movie was produced and directed by Premnath. It was quite an all family affair in the sense that Premnath, Bina Rai (his wife), Rajendranath (his brother) figuring in the movie. Others in the cast were Nishi, Tuntun, Anmol Krishan, Ram Avtar, Ullas, Heeralal, Sundar, Ridkoo, Paul Sharma, Rajan Kapoor, Habeeb, Azeem, Mahesh, Manohar, Niranjan etc.

Today, the 4th of June, is the birth anniversary of Bina Rai.

It also happens to be the birth anniversary of Nutan. In fact both Nutan and Bina Rai were born on the exact same date – the 4th of June 1936. What a coincidence!

Ever since Ghulam Haider introduced dholak (belonging to the percussion family) as a major musical instrument for song compositions in the super hit film ‘Khazaanchi’ (1941), it has become an inseparable part of Hindi film songs. In fact in the 50s, prominent music directors started engaging specialist dholak players in the songs’ orchestration. The introduction of dholak in the Hindi film songs has made some of them so rhythmic that a music lover consciously or unconsciously replays the rhythmic beats with his fingers on whatever place he find near him, be it on a sofa hand rest or on a table top or play it on any of the kitchen vessels as Bhagwan did in ‘ kismet ki hawa kabhi garam kabhi naram’ (Albelaa-1951).

SHAGOOFAA (1953) was produced by P N Films and Premnath and Bina Rai were lead actors in it. One song has already been discussed. Despite having some melodious songs, the film failed miserably and with that its songs were forgotten.

SHAGOOFA (1953) was the first film produced under the banner of P N Films – a production company of Premnath and Bina Rai who were also in the lead roles in this film. The other cast included Purnima, Bipin Gupta,Sundar, Yashodara Katju and Rajendranath. The film was directed by H S Rawail.
