Today (26 January 2024) is Republic Day of India.

India became a republic on 26 January 1950. That was easily a red letter day in the history of Modern India. It was on this day that India decided to be a country that would be a democracy where each citizen, irrespective of his caste, creed, religion, gender, economic status etc would enjoy equality without discrimination. The country would be governed according to the acts of Indian constitution that was adopted on this date.

“Devi” (1970) is a movie which was produced by Olympic pictures. A V Subramaniam and T M Kittu were the producers and the movie was directed by V Madhusudan Rao. The movie had Sanjeev Kumar, Nutan, Farida Jalal,Aruna Irani,Mehmood, Jagirdaar, Madan Puri, Mukri, Rehman, Manmohan krishna, Moppet suraj(aka sarika),Vishwa Mehra, Mallika, Lalita Pawar, Sulochana Latkar, Manorama, Lalita Kumari, Dina Gandhi aka Dina Pathak etc in it.

Young kids growing up in India learn as much of their vocabulary from family members and friends as from Bollywood movies and songs. I learnt the meaning of “ladki pasand karna” for the first time when I heard my mother advising her brother (mama for me) to get married ( “Shaadi kar lo. Koi ladki pasand kar lo”).

As if on cue, this song ” maine ek ladki pasand kar li” started blaring on loudspeakers after a few days. And thanks to my newfound knowledge ( gained by overhearing my mother), I knew the meaning of the phrase “ladki pasand kar li”.
