Today (4 january 2014) is the 21st death anniversary of R D Burman (27 june 1939- 4 january 1994). He was only 53 years of age at that time, and it was unimaginable to realise that he was without work for several years during the last years of his life- and that too in an industry where he redifined the kind of music that would become the norm and an industry where he ruled the roost for well over a decade !

“Do Chor” (1972) was produced by Raj Khosla and directed by Padmanabh. The movie had Dharmendra, Tanuja, Shobhna Samarth, Asit Sen, K.N.Singh,Trilok Kapoor, Bhagwan Dada, Laxmi Chhaya(in Special Appearance), Dhumal, Sajjan, Murad,Randhir, Krishnakant, Leela Mishra, Jalal Agha, Mohan Choti, Gurnam Singh, Vinayak Pai, Viju Khote, Sabina,Shah Durrani, Kanwar Ajit Singh,Jagadish Raj, Ratan Gaurang etc in it.

People these days lament about the degradation in the quality of Hindi movie music today. And as example of exemplary music, the cite the eras of 1950s to 1970s. But I tell you, when I was growing up in that era,then I felt exactly the same way- that 1970s had seen a degradation in the quality of songs vis a vis songs of late 1960s.

“Do Chor” (1972) was quite a popular movie of its time with some popular songs in it. Modern day movie watchers may not be aware of this movie. So let me make them aware of this movie.

1972 was the year when many Bollywood movie makers decided to hitch the bandwagon turned Juggernaut of Kishore Kumar- RD Burman combination. And the result were some movies that had music by R D Burman and songs by Kishore, but the movies themselves were no great shakes.
