Meri jaan meri jaan kehna maano

on:“Do Chor” (1972) was quite a popular movie of its time with some popular songs in it. Modern day movie watchers may not be aware of this movie. So let me make them aware of this movie.
The father of actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Isha Deol etc is the hero of this movie. The mother of Kajol is the heroine of this movie.
This song is a jeep song, with Dharmendra singing this song seated in a car. Singing a song to a girl is considered “teasing” her in India and that way Dharmendra is teasing her. And a girl, especially in Bollywood movie, was supposed to act offended, but before the song was over, she would start responding favourably to Hero’s advances, much to the delight of the movie watching public and much to the chagrin of purists like me, who felt that teasing a girl does not yield such favourable results in real life.
Kishore Kumar has sung this song wonderfully well. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and R D Burman is the music director.

Song-Meri jaan meri jaan kahnaa maano (Do Chor) (1972) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics
meri jaan meri jaan kahnaa maano
meri jaan meri jaan kahnaa maano
ho ho ho ho
dushman hai jahaan rut pahchaano
kategi na ye dagar binaa ek hamsafar
phir kyon naa bande ko apnaa hi jaano
ho ho ho
meri jaan meri jaan kahnaa maano
koyi bhi gaadi duniyaa mein
ek pahiye se nahin chalti
chale nahin zindagi bin saathi ke
dekho tumhaari paayal bhi
ek ghunghroo se nahin bajti
bajti hain taaliyaan do haath se
mere sang aa jaao buraa mat maano
ho ho ho ho
meri jaan meri jaan kahnaa maano
ho ho ho ho
dushman hai jahaan rut pahchaano
main bhi nahin kuchh tumse kam
tum jo nahin rukne waale
dhang mere haath mein hain aur bhi
tumko hansaa kar chhodoongaa
tod ke honthon ke taale
samajh lo main hoon sanam dil chor bhi
apne jaisaa mujhe bhi jaano
ho ho ho ho
meri jaan meri jaan kahnaa maano
ho ho ho ho
dushman hai jahaan rut pahchaano
kategi na ye dagar binaa ek hamsafar
phir kyon naa bande ko apnaa hi jaano
ho ho ho ho
meri jaan meri jaan kahnaa maano

Harassment is a serious problem in India of course. And it is really unfortunate that India’s roadside romeos get their sleaze cues from Bolly. They don’t realize this is Dharmendra–one makes all sorts of exceptions for Dharmendra.

That is true, Atul. I don’t recall ever even remotely “eve-teasing” any girl. Maybe it was because I had sisters, maybe it was my upbringing, I don’t know. I was a somewhat shy person anyway. And the girls I knew happened to be girls in my circle of friends, so they were friends first – the question of “eve-teasing” did not arise. Pulling each other’s leg – that’s totally different ! 🙂 That’s what friends do all the time – and I had my share of it.

Ha ha ha !!!
Tell me about it. 🙂
Possible real-life reactions : (1) Slippers in your direction (2) girl complains to parents or boyfriend and you have to deal with them .

Raja, I find it difficult to visualise you teasing a girl. 🙂 It is like Amol Palekar teasing a girl, such is image of a seedhaa saadaa guy that I have in my mind for you.
