Today’s song is from a film which is almost 90 year old – Jaagirdar-1937. It was made by Sagar Movietone, Bombay.
The talkie films started in 1931 and there was a great activity in the film industry. Major filmmakers from the Silent era were cautious about the future of the Talkie Films, but some people with a vision jumped into making Talkie films. At the same time some more adventurous people entered filmmaking and new studios and companies came up.
The first decade, i.e. from 1931 to 1940 was full of experiments. At a time many Genres were tried. Many experiments were undertaken. The industry was still under the influence of a silent era mentality, so those who could not cope up with the new approach soon eclipsed-like Madon Theatres. Intelligent directors understood that the Talkie films have to be made with a different approach- like V.Shantaram and Sohrab Modi, for example. They not only became famous but also lasted for longer periods.

“Jageerdaar”(1937) is one of the three BTYC eligible movies today.

This date ten year ago, viz 8 June 2010 was a relatively prolific day by the then prevailing standards of the blog. As many as four songs were covered that day. Here are their details:

One can see that four songs from four different decades were covered on 8 june 2010. It was my standard practice in the past to cover around six songs in a day, all belonging to different decades. This practice had become difficult to follow during the last months of 2009 and initial months of 2010 because of disruption due to my transfer. By June 2010, I was finally settled in Nagpur and I was trying to regain the glory days of the blog. And this date was the one when I perhaps decided to shift gears and press the accelerator.

“Jaageerdaar” (1937) was directed by Mehboob Khan. The movie had Surendra, Bibbo (Ishrat Sultana), Motilal, Maya Bannerji, Yakoob, Zia Sarhadi, Pesi Patel, Bhudo Advani, Pande etc in it.

Here is a song from the earliest days of Bollywood talkies. This song is from “Jaageerdaar” (1937). It was with this movie that Anil Biswas came to prominence as a music director.
