In such cases, one had to wait for the song to be played again. The other day we discussed the fact that we had 400 songs of Madan Mohan in the blog and now only about 200 odd more songs composed by him are left to be discussed. At that time I could not help but remember that over 400 S D Burman songs were also discussed in the blog and in his case even lesser number of songs were left to be discussed. We in fact have 485 S D Burman compositions in the blog ! The total number of S D Burman compositions in Hindi movies is of the order of 650, and so only about 170 odd songs composed by the maestro remain to be covered in the blog.

When Manoj Kumar approached him for lyrics and music for his film on the life of Bhagat Singh, the first thing he did was he traveled to Banga village in Punjab, and personally met with the Bhagat Singh’s moher, Mata Vidyawati ji. He talked with her about the legendary martyr, his childhood, his time in college, and as a freedom fighter. And the time he spent in the prison. From these reminiscences of Mata Vidyawati, the incredible poetry that emerged from the pen of this extraordinary poet became the iconic song of patriotic inspiration – “Tu Na Rona Ke Tu Hai Bhagat Singh Ki Maa. . .”.

It is popularly belived that the use of Hinglish words (Hindi and English words combined) began in Hindi movies only in 1980s and it met with the disapproval of purists.
