In Hindi films, in addition to heroines, there would be one or two secondary female characters. For examples, in the love triangle involving the hero, there would be ‘other woman’. To create a rift between hero and the heroine, there will be a vamp. Then, Hindi films’ model box office formula stories also require female characters of seducer, westernised women of high society, courtesans, hero/heroine’s sister and friend etc. There were some popular actresses who were known for doing such character’s roles like Kuldeep Kaur, Shashikala, Nishi, Aruna Irani, Helen, Bindu, Faryal, Naaz, Nazima and many more during 1950s to 1970s. There were some lesser known actresses doing such roles, one of them being Lolita Chatterjee. This diva from Kolkata with her glamorous look, drew the attention of Hindi film makers during mid-1960 to mid-1970.

A style icon of the industry, if ever there was one. A resplendent persona, clearly sparkling with the pathaan lineage behind him, his name spells out a split level career that he straddled almost all his active working years. A career that was forever in either the B grade cinema, getting the macho image of an anti-hero, long before the arrival of Amitabh, or being the friend or a brother of the leading man, whenever he got the opportunity to venture into the A grade films. Or the second level where he called his own shots, made his own films and produced one blockbuster after another.

“Raat Andheri Thhi” (1967) is a B grade movie about which very little is known these days. Theinformation that I have been able to gather about this movie tells me that this movie had Feroz Khan, Sheikh Mukhtar, Lolita Chaterjee & Helen in it, which makes it an archtypical B grade movie of the 1960s. These movies had Sheikh Mukhtraa playing the same kind of roles that would later be played by amitabh Bachchan in this angrey young man movies. Sheikh Mukhtar would use his bulky figure for strongarm tactics, and he would leave the task of singing and dancing to the chocolate faced side hero of the movie, which happens to be Feroz Khan in this movie.
