Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

O meri sharmilee

Posted on: November 23, 2008

Rajesh Khanna’s superstardom owes a good deal to the fact that Kishore Kumar was the playback singer for him. In fact, the next superstar viz Amitabh Bachchan too owes it to Kishore Kumar’s voice for much of his popularity.

Kishore Kumar’s voice in fact helped many an actor, not just superstars, in their careers. For instance, Shashi Kapoor, who did not have much of a career to speak of in early 1970s then got to act in movies like “Sharmilee”, “Chor Machaye shor” etc where Kishore Kumar was the playback singer. These movies rode on the popularity of the music of the movie, that largely comprised of songs sung by Kishore Kumar. These movies riding piggyback on the success of their music helped Shashi Kapoor become such a well sought after actor that he used to give dates on hourly basis, rather than on shift basis. That is how many offers he got and signed in 1970s.

Here is one such song that helped Shashi Kapoor’s career as an actor no end.

Song- O meri Sharmeeli (Sharmilee) (1971) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Neeraj, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

o meri o meri o meri sharmilee
o meri o meri o meri sharmilee
aao naa tarsaao naa
aao naa tarsaao naa
o meri o meri o meri sharmilee

teraa kaajal lekar raat bani, raat bani
teri mehndi lekar din ugaa, din ugaa
teri boli sunkar sur jage, sur jage
teri khushboo lekar phool khilaa, phool khilaa
jaan-e-man tu hai kahaan
o meri o meri o meri sharmilee
o meri o meri o meri sharmilee

teri raahon se guzre jaba se ham, jab se ham
mujhe meri dagar tak yaad nahin, yaad nahin
tujhe dekhaa jab se dilrubaa, dilrubaa
mujhe meraa ghar tak yaad nahin, yaad nahin
jaan-e-man tu hai kahaan
o meri o meri o meri sharmilee
o meri o meri o meri sharmilee

o neeraj nayana aa zaraa, aa zaraa
teri laaj kaa ghoonghat khol doon, khol doon
tere aanchal par koyi geet likhoon, geet likhoon
tere honthon mein amrit ghol doon, ghol doon
jaana-e-man tu hai kahaan
o meri o meri o meri sharmilee
o meri o meri o meri sharmilee
aao naa tarsaao naa
aao naa tarsaao naa
o meri o meri o meri sharmilee
o meri o meri o meri sharmilee

I remember we had gone from Orissa to Bombay for our summer vacation holidays. We saw a movie in the film theater – it was this one, Sharmilee.

Kishore’s class once again comes to the fore. Lovely songs in this movie although I thought the story loses its way a bit towards the end.
