Aah, the magical triple zero. There is always quite a long wait to get to a milestone that carries all zeroes in the last three digits. Welcome all, to the fourteenth such milestone. Yes, I hear you say it – it IS getting to be a staggering collection, this ASAD blog. You can pick your time preference, we are on to the
- 3, 485th day, or
- at 497 weeks and 6 days, or
- 114 months and 14 days, or
- 9 Years, 6 Months and 14 Days
of the continued proliferation of this blog.
Given where we are today, and from when we started, the average posting rate has been a tad over 4 songs a day, 4.0172 to be precise. Or to put it another way, if we were exactly at 4 songs a day, then today we would have been at 13,940, requiring 15 more days to hit the 14K milestone. So we are running marginally faster than 4 songs a day. And today morning, I was just wondering, maybe I should suggest to Atul ji, and maybe we should name this blog as AFSAD, instead of ASAD. She was 74 years when she passed away in 2004. And by then, she had spent the last four decades of her life in a self imposed seclusion. The separation from the public domain was so complete that many took her to have already departed from this world. When the tidings of her demise came, many were surprised.

Today’s date is an important date. Two very unique artists share this date as their birth anniversary. Two artists who have made some of the most memorable contributions to the Hindi film song and music. The two names are Sajjaad Husain Sb, music director par excellence and Suraiya, the singer with an enchanting voice and an unmatchable repertoire of renditions.

A very adorable sweetness, that is what her voice always conveys. Be it a song of joy or verses of pensive sadness, it is the amiable pleasantness of the voice that appeals the most. Just earlier in the day, Bakhshish Singh ji and I were conversing about this anniversary today. One of his comments sounded very charming. He said, no matter what is the tone of the song, as you listen to it, you can feel a smile behind the sound. May it be a cheerless song of sadness, even then the voice sounds as if there is a sweet smile behind it. That is Suraiya’s voice for you.

After almost four decades of a self imposed silence, finally the life breath behind this charming voice faded away, this day eleven years ago. A voice that was the darling of the listeners, for more than two decades prior to her reclusive phase.
