After almost four decades of a self imposed silence, finally the life breath behind this charming voice faded away, this day eleven years ago. A voice that was the darling of the listeners, for more than two decades prior to her reclusive phase.

Remembering Suraiya on the anniversary of her passing away (31st January).

A career that lasted almost three decades, considering that she started working as a child artist, as early as 1937.  About 65 films and a little over three hundred songs to her credit, she bid the industry a good bye in the mid 1960s, and stayed away for good.

With 305 of her songs already posted here, the remaining songs are rare and difficult to trace.  This rare number is from the 1949 film ‘Chaar Din’.  In this film, she appeared as the lead actress opposite to Shyam.  The rest of the star cast includes Jayant, Badri Prasad, Randhir, Kukku, Om Prakash, Mohana, Shanta Kunwar, Amir Bano, Shyama, Anno Rani, Mala, Nazeer Kashmiri, Ismail, S Baburao, Kathana, Ram Avtar, Ameer Ali, and Nawab among others.

The ten songs in this film are written by Shakeel Badayuni and the music is composed by Shyam Sunder.  A poignant song that tells of the departure of the loved one.  The lines of this song are so appropriate, as we remember the singer today,

A voice that is so sweet in sadness.  A song of remembrance that expresses the very emotions felt by her fans today.  Ah, the wonder that this destiny is.

Song – Koi Jaane Waale Se Keh De Ye Jaa Ke (Chaar Din) (1949) Singer – Suraiya, Lyrics – Shakeel Badayuni, MD – Shyam Sunder

Lyrics

gham de diya
khushi ko… mitaa kar chale gaye
kyon mere dil ko
tthes lagaa kar chale gaye

koi jaane waale se
keh de ye jaa ke
koi jaane waale se
keh de ye jaa ke
kahaan chhup gaye
kahaan chhup gaye
hum se nazren milaa ke
koi jaane waale se
keh de ye jaa ke

diya haaye kyon dil ko
gham itni jaldi
diya haaye kyon dil ko
gham itni jaldi
tumhaare liye ham ne
duniya badal di
tumhaare liye ham ne
duniya badal di
tumhin chal diye. . . ay ay
tumhin chal diye
ham se daaman bachaa ke
koi jaane waale se
keh de ye jaa ke
kahaan chhup gaye
kahaan chhup gaye
hum se nazren milaa ke
koi jaane waale se
keh de ye jaa ke

salaamat raho tum
hamaari dua hai
salaamat raho tum
hamaari dua hai
khushi le ke rukhsat
huye ho to kya hai
khushi le ke rukhsat
huye ho to kya hai
guzaarenge din. . .
guzaarenge din hum bhi
aansoo bahaa ke
koi jaane waale se
keh de ye jaa ke
kahaan chhup gaye
kahaan chhup gaye
hum se nazren milaa ke
koi jaane waale se
keh de ye jaa ke
