Missing Films of 1960s – 108
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

At 108, generally a maala is considered to be complete. So we are at the 108th episode of this series, searching for and bringing on missing films of 1960s on to our blog. Ah but, the homework is not still fully done. So there still are some films pending, to be taken care.

The story of the descent of the holy river Ganga, from the Baikunth Lok down to the earth, is very detailed and interesting. It spans four generations of kings belonging to the Suryavansh, the Sun Dynasty, in which later Lord Ram also appeared.

In the lineage of Suryavansh – Vivaswaan (also known as Vaivaswat Manu) is the son of Sun God. He had 10 sons. His second eldest son is Ikshvaku, from whom starts the primary lineage of the Sun Dynasty as we know it. His next in line is a son named Nimi. The lineage progresses and through more generations reaches Raja Harishchandra. The descendants of Raja Harishchandra in sequence, are Rohit, Vrishabh, Baahuk and then Sagar (‘सगर’).

Raja Sagar has two wives – Sumati and Keshini, but no children. Once Rishi Aurv (‘और्व’), passing through the kingdom, stayed at the palace and accepted the hospitality of Raja Sagar. When he was leaving, pleased by the selfless service done by the king, he asked the king to express his wish. The king of course expressed his desire to have sons so that his dynasty may continue. The Rishi blessed him, and said that one of his queens will give birth to one son. The second queen will be blessed with 60,000 sons. All of them will be brave and exceptional, but that they will be playful and short in temper.

With the passage of time, the blessing of the Rishi bore fruits, and the sons were born. Sumati gave birth to one sone Asmanja, and Keshini gave birth to 60,000 sons. Asmanja turns out to be a person with negative qualities.

Then after another passage of time, the King decided to conduct the Ashvamedha Yajna, to proclaim his sovereignty over all the land. The sixty thousand sons were given charge of protecting the horse of the Yajna. Now, Lord Indra, the king of the demigods, was envious of Raja Sagar. He decided to play a mischief. One night, as all the sons and soldiers were asleep, Indra stole the horse, took it, and tied it in the ashram of Kapil Muni, who was meditating at that time.

The army of 60,000 sons of Sagar reached Kapil Muni’s ashram in search of the horse. Finding the horse there, they jumped to the conclusion that Kapil Muni had stolen it. Muni was deep in meditation. Sagar’s sons started to rebuke him and call him names. They prodded him with their bows and disturbed him no end. Kapil Muni’s mediation was broken. He opened his eyes and looked at the army of 60,000 sons of Sagar. Such was the power in him, that by his mere glance, the 60,000 boys were burnt to death and turned into ashes.

When Sagar heard of this news, he was grief stricken. All his sons, save one, had perished without any proper samskaar etc. He consulted his Raj Purohit, Vashishth Muni. Vashishth said that the only way the perished sons could attain salvation was if the waters of the holy river Ganga was sprinkled on the ashes of the army of sons. For Raja Sagar, it was an unthinkable task. The grief took his life. His remaining son Asmanja was not a good person, and had been banished from the kingdom. But the son of Asmanja – Anshuman, turned out to be a very noble person. Sagar made him the King. Anshuman made a vow to bring water of Ganga to the earth. He forsook his kingdom and did mediation and penance all his life. But was not successful. He had one son, Dilip. The onus of accomplishing this task fell on to his shoulder. He too followed the path of meditation and penance, but quickly lost his health and passed away. The mantle for this task was now taken up by Dilip’s son, Bhagirath.

He prayed to Brahma for long years. Finally, Brahma was pleased, and he blessed Bhagirath with the promise that Ganga would descend from Baikunth and will come to earth. The narrative further tells us of the problem of the strength and volume of the flowing waters of Ganga. The earth or any person on earth could not withstand the force of the flow of Ganga. Then Bhagirath prayed to Lord Shiva, who agreed to let the holy river Ganga descend on to him, he would bear the main brunt of the force, and then the rest of earth and its people would then be blessed by it. There is a lot more detail in this narrative, appearing in multiple scriptures.

The film ‘Har Har Gange’ of 1968 is produced under the banner of Nitin Chitra and is directed by Babubhai Mistry. (Another film by the same name was produced in 1979, and that too is also directed by the same person.) The star cast of the 1968 film is listed as Jaishri Gadkar, Abhi Bhattacharya, Mahesh Kumar, Sulochana, Jeevan, Bharti, BM Vyas, Arvind Pandya, Uma Dutt, Vishwas, SN Tripathi, Sudarshan, Babu Raje, Tuntun, Paulson, Dalda Hindustani, Mahesh Bhatt, Rajkumar, Shri Bhagwan, Saraswati Devi, Bhairavi, Uma Khosla, Meena Pankaj, Malti Shashi, Master Gopi, Prakash, Munna Bagla, Madhumati, Bela Bose, and Helen.

The film has 6 songs, all penned by Kavi Pradeep. The music is composed by SN Tripathi. The song has been rendered by Krishna Kalle. The occasion seems to be that King Bhagirath is leaving the kingdom to go to the forest to do penance and to free his dynasty from the curse that 60,000 of his ancestors had brought upon themselves. From the words in the verses, it seems as if the song is being performed on screen by the wife of King Bhagirath. I have not been able to locate her name in the related information available. I would request other knowledgeable readers to please add this information if available.

With this song, the 1968 film ‘Har Har Gange’ makes its debut on our blog. With the publication of this post we are coming to the home stretch with this series. Now just 4 more films from the 1960s remain in this project. More details about that later.

Missing Films of 1960s – 107

The film that is being introduced today is ‘Lav Kush’ from 1967. It was a time when mythological and religious films were still a draw – a draw enough for producers to continue producing this genre of films. It was a crop of artists, producers and financiers who held sway in the decades from the early years of Indian cinema, till maybe 1980s. Beyond that, once that crop withered away – passing away, retiring, or just plain fatigue, this genre of films has seen only a downward slide.

The film is produced by Basant Pictures. Regulars will recall that Basant Pictures is an off shoot of the Wadia Movietone, and both these production banners have witnessed great success in the 1940s and 1950s – Wadia with their stunt films (mostly starring Nadia), and Basant with their religious and social offerings.

The film is directed by SN Tripathi; ah yes, the same person who is also the music director. The cast of actors reads like Jaishri Gadkar, Aseem Kumar, Sheel Kumar, Bela Bose, Bablu, SN Tripathi, Chitra, Dalpat, BM Vyas, Hari Shukla, Bhagwan Sinha, RC Pandey, and Lalita Desai. The film has seven songs listed, and all the seven are penned by songwriter Saraswati Kumar Deepak.1

The song is a dance song in the royal court. The time of narrative is when Lord Ram has safely returned to Ayodhya, He has been crowned as the king, and the Ram Rajya is installed. Things seem to be settling down and moving smoothly. At this juncture, it becomes known that Sita is expecting and should become a mother soon.

This song is played at this time, when a court full of ladies marking this celebration with their good wishes blessings. The lead dancer in this song is Bela Bose. Interesting to note that Bela Bose is known for the ‘other’ types of dances. However, this dance – cast in a combination of semi classical plus folk steps – is no less impressive.

Maybe 5, or 6 films more to go for the 1960s list. Hopefully soon. 🙂

Missing Films of 1960s – 103

The film that we bring on board today is ‘Sati Sulochana’ from 1969. One more film that is rarely heard about, although the video of this film is available. And once again, lovely songs that have not been explored. The sound of this song seems like it was heard on the radio, but that was a long time back.

The music is by SN Tripathi, who incidentally has also directed this film. The film is produced under the banner of SA Films, Bombay. The star cast includes Prithviraj, Anita Dutt, Prem Nath, Raj Kumar, Bipin Gupta, Kanan Kaushal, Sundar, Ram Singh, and Ram Mohan etc.

The story of Sati Sulochana is part of the history of Ramayan.  Sulochana is the daughter of Sheshnaag, the king of serpents. She is married to Meghnaad, the son of Raavan. Meghnaad is also known as Indrajit, for he had once vanquished Lord Indra and captured many sophisticated weapons from him. In the narrative of Ramayan, Sulochana is described as a brave lady who is very supportive of her husband. Eventually, when her husband is killed in the battle with Lakshman, she makes a decision to immolate herself on his pyre.

This story has been made into films on many occasions. The first one on record is the silent film ‘Sati Sulochana’ in 1921. Then this film was produced in Kannada, in 1934, as the first talkie film in Kannada language. In 1935, a Hindi film was also released by this name, under the production banner of Godavari Cinetone. In 1961, this tale was also told in a Telegu film starring NT Ramarao. And then in 1969, we have this Hindi production again.

Geet Kosh lists 9 songs of this film. Music is from the mind of SN Tripathi. The songs have been written by Bharat Vyas and BD Mishra. This song is from the pen of Bharat Vyas.  The singing voice is that of Suman Kalyanpur. On screen, it appears as if the leading lady and one of two of her friends are lip syncing the same playback singing.

The song is picturized as a group dance song, in which the leading lady is being teased by her friends, asking her who is the one who comes into your dreams. The song is a lively exchange between the lady and her sahelis. On screen, I am not able to identify with certainty, the lady who leads the song. Is she Kanan Kaushal? I request our more knowledgeable readers and friends to please help identify her.

Enjoy this lovely lilting melody, one of those songs that should have been more popular.

Missing Films of 1960s – 95

We come to a very interesting episode of this series. The film I pick for today is ‘Koi Ghulam Nahin’ from 1970. The Geet Kosh listings say that the film has 6 songs, and all of them have been released on 78 rpm gramophone records. As I checked my own collection, I find that all the six songs are available. Just to check, I also went online and discovered that two songs are available on the YouTube. And very interestingly, one of them turns out to be a video. And a very interesting video at that. The song is sung by Rafi Sb, and is performed on screen by MG Ramachandran (MGR), the super star of South Indian cinema.

This heightened my curiosity, and I did some more research. It turns out that MGR has appeared in 13 Hindi films (1 unreleased), between 1951 and 1980. On a hunch, I checked out the production banners. It turns out that for all these 13 films, the production houses are/were located in Madras (now Chennai). So one inference that can be drawn is that all these 13 films might well have been bilingual films, or that they are originally films produced in South Indian language and then dubbed into Hindi.

Since we are dealing with the 1960s, I checked out the other MGR films in this decade. And I find that other than ‘Baghdad’ (1961), for the other MGR films in this decade, viz. ‘Hamen Bhi Jeene Do’ (1962), ‘Meri Bahen’ (1962), ‘Raj Mahal’ (1963), and ‘Nartaki Chitra’ (1965), the songs are not traceable and not available. A possible explanation can be that for these bilingual or dubbed films, no songs were released on gramophone records. And that their video prints are not available too.

Today’s film, ‘Koi Ghulam Nahin’, is produced under the banner of MGR Pictures, madras and is directed by K Shankar. The star cast is listed as MG Ramchandran, Ashokan, Manohar, Chandra Babu, Cho, Jaylalita, Pandhari Bai, Jyotilakshmi, and Baby Rani. The songs are written by Saraswati Kumar Deepak and the music is by SN Tripathi.

Today’s song, is an ode in the praise of the ‘mother’. In the video clip, we can see MGR lip syncing this song sung by Rafi Sb. The lip syncing, as well as in some ways, the odd arrangement of Hindi words in the lines of the song, well indicates the possibility of dubbing, and / or force fitting Hindi lyrics to the tune of a song originally in a South Indian language.

In the video clip, we also see a lady dressed in white, as the song progresses. I don’t want to hazard a guess, and I request other knowledgeable friends and readers to help identify this actress.

Today, March 14th, also happens to be the birth anniversary of music director SN Tripathi. This song also makes that anniversary connection for today.

Missing Films of 1960s – 85

The next in this series is a religious film from 1970. Yes, the times were when this genre of films had a serious following, and the producers in the industry would be creating films in this category. Today’s film, ‘Shri Krishna Leela’ is from the house of Wadia’s, under their banner of Basant Pictures. As we review the data about film production under this banner, we find that this has been one of the very active production houses over the decades. [Note: I am examining the data in the Geet Kosh from 1931 to 1980 only.]

Over the years, Wadia film production company went about its business under the names as – Wadia Brothers, Wadia Brothers Productions, Wadia Films and Wadia Movietone. Collectively, these banners have been active since 1933 till the year 1971, having produced 50+ films in various genres – social, stunt, religious, mythical, costume dramas, historical etc. In 1943, the company launched another banner, named Basant Pictures. As we scan their list of films, once again we find slight variations in the banner names as – Basant Pictures, Basant Pictures (Wadia Brothers) and Basant Wadia Brothers Production. Collectively, this banner has a listing of about 60 films between 1943 and 1980. The films in this list also cover just the same set of film genres.

A brief about the House of Wadia. The ancestors of this Parsi family originally settled in Surat after migrating from Persia. The original business of Wadia family was shipbuilding. The logo of Wadia Movietone prominently carries an image of a ship – it is a representation of their origins – the legacy business that started off their fortunes. The Wadia Group’s shipbuilding business was set up in 1736 by Lowjee Nuserwanjee Wadia. Later during that century, the group shifted its base from Surat to Bombay. They built trading ships, and later in 1800s they build maritime vessels for the Royal Navy (Great Britain).

Wadia Movietone was founded in 1933 by the brothers – JBH Wadia and Homi Wadia. JBH Wadia (born 1901) was a very well educated young man, who came into the film industry in the closing years of silent cinema. He produced about a dozen silent films, with moderate success. His productions were mostly adaptations of successful Hollywood productions of that era.

The other co-founders were Manchersha Billimoria, and Burjore and Nadirshaw Tata. Their first film – ‘Laal e Yaman’ (1933) was a major commercial success. In 1935, the company produced ‘Hunterwali’ with Nadia in the title role, along with Boman Shroff and John Cawas in prominent roles. This film became a surprise hit, bringing in a huge commercial windfall for the company. In the process, it set a trend which was duplicated by Wadias themselves and also copied by many other production houses. In 1936 came ‘Miss Frontier Mail’, followed by ‘Lutaru Lalna’ in 1938, ‘Punjab Mail’ in 1939, ‘Diamond Queen’ in 1940, and ‘Bambaiwali’ in 1941. However, by this time, the repeated use of the stunt formula lost its luster, and the company started facing losses. In 1936, the Tata brothers had already moved out from the partnership. In 1942, the Wadia Movietone studio was put up for sale. V Shantaram, who was moving out of Prabhat at the same time, purchased this studio and set up his famous production house – Rajkamal Kalamandir, at this premises.

In 1942 itself, the younger brother, Homi Wadia, set up Basant Pictures as a new production house. He started producing films under this banner using studio facilities at other premises. In 1947, he eventually set up his own studio once again. Basant Studio was functional till 1981. In 1990, the studio was inherited by Riyad Vinci Wadia, the grandson of JBH Wadia. He revived film production once again under this banner. However, he too passed away in 2003. The studio now houses the Wadia Movietone and Basant Pictures archives and memorabilia collection.

The film ‘Shri Krishna Leela’ is directed by Homi Wadia. The star cast includes Master Sachin, Heena Kumari, Jaishri Gadkar, Sapru, Manhar Desai, Kumar Dighe, Deepak, Tabassum, Ratnamala, Padmarani, Uma Dutt, Shekhar, Master Bobby, Master Ratan, Tuntun, Babu Raje, Habeeb, Dalpat, H Prakash, and Prince Arjun. The songs of this film are penned by Bharat Vyas and the music is from the mind of SN Tripathi.

Today’s song is a lullaby, in the voice of Asha Bhosle. On screen, the song is performed by Jaishree Gadkar, in the role of Maa Yashoda, as she is crooning to put the infant Krishna to sleep. Close to the end of this clip, we see a little more grown up child Krishna, role played by Master Sachin.

Today, 24th December 2017 is the ninety-third (24 December 1924 – 31 July 1980) birth anniversary of the great singer – ‘divine voice’ – Mohammad Rafi.

Much has already been written about Rafi Saab on this blog and many other sources, and from my own experience I can say that he will be there as long as the Hindi Film Music is there. His songs will be cherished even by the coming generations if they get the opportunity to listen them or if they get the surroundings/atmosphere where songs sung by Rafi Saab are played. Such is the magic of his voice that can leave the listeners ‘spell bound’ and ‘mesmerized’.

I have experienced how listening to his songs my daughters will not switch over to the newer songs and asked me to either fast forward or change it with other.

There is nothing new that I can write in this post about Rafi Saab, except that we respect him, we admire him and we love his songs which will be there with us till we are alive.

24th December also happens to be the birth anniversary of one of my favorite actors of the golden era of Hindi movies – Mahipal (24 December 1919 – 15 May 2005) – whom we have been watching in most of the black and white era ‘fantasy’ and ‘mythological’ movies.  I liked him very much in all of those movies of him which I had watched so far. ‘Navrang-1959’ is off-course being the closest to my heart.
(Though some sources mention the date of birth of Mahipal as different, I think the date mentioned on our blog must be correct and same has been in the article on ‘Beete Huye Din’ by Shishir ji).

We cherish the memories and the contribution of these great artists to the Hindi Cinema and Indian Culture and they will always remain in our heart and in the history of Hindi Cinema forever.

On this occasion here is a song from the 1965 movie ‘Maharaja Vikram’ sung by Mohd Rafi. Listening to the song, I guess that this must be a ‘background song’ in the movie. It is written by BD Mishra and composed by SN Tripathi. The film was directed by S.N.Tripathi for ‘Rajroop Productions, Bombay’.

The star cast includes Mahipal, Anita Guha, BM Vyas, Vishwas Kunthe, Bela Bose, Sundar, Tuntun, Mishrilal, Radheshyam, Bhagwan Sinha, Sadhna Khote, Shri Bhagwan, Madhumati, Laxmichaya and others.

This movie had total ten songs as mentioned in HFGK Vol-IV, all written by BD Mishra and composed by SN Tripathi. One song sung by Suman Kalyanpur “Maane Na Mora Bichhua Boley” from this movie has already been posted on the blog earlier in 2016.

As we have discussed in many posts earlier on this topic, Rakshabandhan is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Saawan. In traditional terms, the timing of today’s celebrations got restricted due to two additional astrological events that coincided with the full moon celebration. As per the calculations of the ephemeris applicable to the Indian subcontinent, the full moon ‘tithi’ i.e. the ‘poornima’ started at 10:29 pm yesterday (6th Aug), and will be in effect till 11:41 pm tonight (7th Aug).

Wow. Wow. And wow. Earlier, I never did pay any attention to the songs of this film. One of those also-ran mythological stories which make up the list of movies of any year in that era.  Haan theek hai, will check it out when there is more time at hand etc. Now, coming to the implementation of this series, and the home work assigned to me by Khyati Ben, I am reviewing the available songs of films that still are waiting in the wings to find their place on our blog.
