Boys have been wooing girls for many generations, and despite cultural differences, modus operandi remains the same across all cultures. It is the male who has to act, and the female reacts. And a fine delicate balance must be struck. The male should not be so shy that he would not even approach the female, nor should he be too crude to turn the girl off. The usual Indian way, to launch a trial baloon, and to test the waters to see that the conditions are favourable for the approach- it is the recommended way that still works, as it did 50 years ago.

Look at this song. It is almost a textbook perfect way to woo a girl. The boy is wooing the girl in a cute and inoffensive way, advertising for a wife, like people advertise for some routine matters. Quite an original idea for a song at that time. He is reeling off a long list of impossible high standards that the applicant for the job of wife should possess. He is indirectly hinting at the fact that the girl actually possesses these high qualities. And of course, the boy is proposing to her. Now tell me if there is a girl who will not be flattered if she is wooed in this way? Kishore and Sadhna play their roles almost to perfection in this song.

The lyricist Rajinder Krishan could not be praised high enough for coming up with such a gem of an idea for a song. Kishore Kumar, a natural in such a role even in real life was such a perfect fit, both as an actor as well as singer for his part. This song was sung some seven years before Kishore Kumar became a singing superstar, but this song shows that he already possessed all the qualities of being a fantastic playback singer. Madan Mohan has come up with a wonderful understated music. Madan Mohan could come up with such cute light hearted numbers as well, if he got a chance. And how wonderfully well he has exploited this opportunity. A gem, a pure gem. I cannot have enough of this song.

Song: Zaroorat hai zaroorat hai ( Manmauji) (1962) Singer-Kishore Kumar,Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan,MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

zaroorat hai zaroorat hai,
sakht zaroorat hai!

zaroorat hai zaroorat hai zaroorat hai
ek shrimati ki,
kalaawati ki,
sewaa kare jo pati ki
zaroorat hai zaroorat hai zaroorat hai
ek shrimati ki,
kalaawati ki,
sewaa kare jo pati ki
zaroorat hai zaroorat hai zaroorat hai

haseen hazaaron bhi hon khade,
magar usi par nazar pade
haseen hazaaron bhi hon khade,
magar usi par nazar pade
ho zulf gaalon se khelti,
ke jaise din raat se lade
ho ho ho ho
adaaon mein bahaar ho,
nigaahon pe khumaar ho
qubool meraa pyaar ho to kyaa baat hai
zaroorat hai zaroorat hai zaroorat hai
ek shrimati ki,
kalaawati ki,
sewaa kare jo pati ki
zaroorat hai zaroorat hai zaroorat hai

jhatak ke gesoo jahaan chale,
to saath mein aasmaan chale
jhatak ke gesoo jahaan chale,
to saath mein aasmaan chale
lipat ke kitne bhi paanv se,
ye poochhte hon kahaan chale
ho ho ho ho
pyaar se jo kaam le,
hans ke salaam le
wo haath meraa tham le to kyaa baat hai
zaroorat hai zaroorat hai zaroorat hai
ek shrimati ki,
kalaawati ki,
sewaa kare jo pati ki
zaroorat hai zaroorat hai zaroorat hai

itar mein saansen basi basi,
hon mastiyon mein rasi rasi
itar mein saansen basi basi,
hon mastiyon mein rasi rasi
zaraa jo palken jhuki jhuki,
bhawen ghaneri kasi kasi
ho ho ho ho
phoolon mein gulaab ho
khud apnaa jawaab ho
wo pyaar ki kitaab ho to kyaa baat hai
zaroorat hai zaroorat hai zaroorat hai
ek shrimati ki,
kalaavati ki,
sewaa kare jo pati ki
zaroorat hai zaroorat hai zaroorat hai

haan haan!
shrimati ki
ho ho !
kalaawati ki
sewaa kare jo pati ki
zaroorat hai zaroorat hai zaroorat hai
sakht zaroorat hai!

Translation

Wanted, Wanted,Wanted, wanted urgently
One wife, a well trained one, one who would dutifully serve her husband

There may be thousands of beautiful ladies out there, but she must stand out among them
Her hairs playing with her cheeks, as if night is fighting with day
Her manners must delight people ,her eyes must inebriate them
If she accepts my love too then that would be the icing on the cake
When she would walk, throwing her hairs behind her back, sky would accompany her
And would ask her where she was going
She would get her work done with love, greet others with smile
If she holds my hand too, then that would be the icing on the cake

Her cute manners accompanied by sweet fragrance of her breaths
her eyes lowered slightly and eyelashes dark and firm
She should be Rose among flowers, and comparable only to herself
If she is the book of love too, then it would be the icing on the cake

Yes,Yes, a wife
A trained one,one who would dutifuly serve her husband,
wanted,wanted,wanted,Wanted urgently

Wonderful song, Atul.
Kishore and his “chulbula” nature is in full display here.
One cannot help but enjoy this song.
Good selection.

I wholeheartedly agree with you that this is a pure gem. The words may not fly in today’s sense of equality, but the tune and the accompanying music are catchy.

This song will have its desired effect even in today’s India, provided the boy has the personality of a Kishore Kumar.
