Daakiya daak laaya daakiya daak laaya

Posted on: August 11, 2008

Before “Chitthi aayi hai” became the most popular “Chitthi” song, it was this song that was regarded as the last word among “Chitthi” songs. The present generation may not have heard of this song. Even people of my generation may have forgotten it, but I accidentally stumbled upon this song again. Wow, what a song it was ! I am sure people who have heard this song, as well as those who have not, will love to listen to this song.

There is a female voice in the song as well, and I thought for a long time that it belonged to Lata Mangeshkar/ Asha Bhonsle, but it turns out that the female voice belongs to someone called Vandana Shastri. Apparently, the pretty extra who is seen in this part of the song has given her voice in this song.
(Correction- it is no pretty extra- it is none other than Aruna Irani who plays the role of the woman missing her husband).

In this song, a bicycle riding postman carries posts in a village. The song describes the feelings of those who whose eagerly look forward to the postman, in the hope of hearing about the news of their dear ones. A woman complaining to the postman that she has not received a letter or money from her husband for a long time- it is bound to melt even a few stone hearts.

Quite a moving song, sung so beautifully by Kishore Kumar. It is not an easy song to sing ( just look at the lyrics), but Kishore Kumar has made light of this tricky song. When the lady asks the postman to write to her husband, he obliges, and plays the part of agony uncle cum letter writer. Part of the song where he expresses the feelings of the lady, tone of the song becomes sad while describing the plight of the lady. Having done that, his voice resumes the earlier tone of the song befitting a postman doing his job.

Gulzar ( lyricist who gave us lyrics that were sheer quality rather than mindless quantity) excels in this song. He has come up with simple and natural words that perfectly sums up a day in the life of a postman. I cannot but help feel that Gulzar should be regarded as the true suceessor of Shailendra among lyricists. Laxmikant Pyarelal’s characteristic music enhances the effect of the song.

Postman has come
He has brought mail

He has brought mails conveying happy news
and some conveying sad news as well

Sister in law of nephew of brother in law is getting engaged
It is on the day of full moon
Uncle would have surely arrived to take you with him,
but he is unable to do so
You must come with entire family including kids
Grand pa…oops, Grandpa expired,Grandmom is sick
Maternal grnadpa’s post funeral rites are on monday
Convey my affections to younsters and respects to elders
Please understand my helplessness and treat this post as telegram
The postman has brought a Wedding invitation for you, Somnath

Mr postman
Yes
For last six months he has not even sent a letter to me

Not even wrote to you. Tell me what should I write to him

Just write that he should come soon

How am I supposed to spend my nights alone while separated from you
I feel your absence even more in this rainy season
Give up your job and come to me please

Postman has come
He has brought mail

Hey Muniyaa
O you holi celebrators
your husband has sent colours for you in the envelope
Some people have good news
others are not so fortunate
Nimmo is expecting
Khairu’s cup is full to the brim
Did you bring seven rupees ?
seven rupees ?
not a chance !
Postman has come
He has brought mail

Again, lots of memories coming flooding back.
It is safe to say that this movie, inspite of having Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini, was not a hit.
I saw this movie many years ago (probably around 1980).
It was an OK movie – somewhat different from the routine movies of the time.

And this song definitely stuck in my mind. It is not a song that one forgets easily after listening to it for the first time.

Raja, Rajesh Khanna worked in lots of offbeat movies with great storylines in his second innings. Unfortunately, he never regained his superstardom with these movies, though I have begun to like these movies very much.

And you will notice that quite a few of my songs are from Rajesh Khanna movies of that phase. It is not deliberate, but inadvertant, because I am actually discovering so many nice songs that I would like to include.

When I suddenly came across this song again, I had to include it here.

ok,I’m showing my ignorance here, but what does ‘chitthi’ mean? And what is a ‘chitthi’ song? This song,by the way,is great, and the picturization is fun, too.

“Chitthi” is Hindi for post(letters etc) that was brought by postman. In olden days, post was the only way of communication possible between people living away from one another. In Bollywood movies, some very nice songs were written on this topic and I call them ‘Chitthi” song.
