Dukhi man mere sun mera kahna

Posted on: August 12, 2008

It was Music director S D Burman who gave Kishore Kumar the chance of singing for the then matinee idol Dev Anand starting from Baazi (1951), and how well Kishore Kumar responded to the opportunity.
He did a good job, and that enabled him to get a foothold on the industry as a playback singer, singing for Dev Anand, the then heart throb of millions.

Later, Kishore Kumar would sing for Dev Anand under S D Burman’s music direction in quite a few movies viz. Taxi Driver (1954), Munimji ( 1955), Funtoosh (1956), Paying Guest (1957), Nau do Gyarah( 1957), Teen Deviyan (1965), Jewel Thief (1967), Prem Pujari (1970), Gambler (1971) and Chhupa Rustam (1973)

It was songs like this, in addition to his usual happy songs that helped Kishore Kumar build a good c v as a playback singer, which would later pay rich dividends to him in his career.

This song was one of the first sad songs sung by Kishore Kumar. It was sung in a 1956 movie called Funtoosh, and one can feel the sadness of it even today, more than 50 years later. Simple lyrics, simple music, but the song has been sung so beautifully that it has become one of the immortal sad songs of Bollywood music.

Song- Dukhi man mere ( Funtoosh) (1956) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD- S D Burman

Lyrics

dukhi man mere sun mera kahnaa
jahaan nahin chainaa vahaan nahin rahna
dukhi man mere

dard hamaaraa koi na jaane
apni garaj ke sab hain deevaane
kiske aage ronaa royen
des paraayaa log begaane
dukhi man mere sun mera kahnaa
jahaan nahin chainaa vahaan nahin rahna
dukhi man mere

laakh yahaan jholi phailaa le
kuchh nahin denge is jag vaale
patthar ke dil mom na honge
chaahe jitnaa neer bahaale
dukhi man mere sun mera kahnaa
jahaan nahin chainaa vahaan nahin rahna
dukhi man mere

apne liye kab hain ye mele
ham hain har ek mele mein akele
kyaa paayegaa usmein rahkar
jo duniyaa jeevan se khele
kyaa paayegaa usmein rahkar
jo duniyaa jeevan se khele
dukhi man mere sun mera kahnaa
jahaan nahin chainaa vahaan nahin rahna
dukhi man mere

Translation

My sad heart, listen to me
I dont want to stay where I feel restless

No one understands my pain
Everyone is obsessed with self interest
There is no point sharing my grief with someone else
It is an unknown place full of strangers

You may try your utmost
but you will get nothing out of these tight fisted people
Their stone herats will not turn soft
however much you may cry before them

All this fanfare is not for me
I am all alone in this festivity
I will get nothing staying in this world
where people treat lives as playthings
My sad heart, listen to me
I dont want to stay where I feel restless

Atul ji great post of evergreen kishore song, but who sung the first line of the song ‘kabira is sanssar’ ?

Like

Who sang the saqui before the Kishore Kumar began the song which is not in Kishore Kumar’s voice. Please name the singer who sang the saqui. Thanks.

Nobody is giving answer to this singer question

The voice belongs to none other than Rafi Sahab singing the one line ” baja nagaadaa kooch ka aa…..”. Wonders never cease in old film songs. One line in his voice hiding for all these decades.

No… my mistake, The line I wrote sounds like Rafi Sahab’s voice, but rest of the lines, before and after the particular line are not Rafi Sahab’s voice. So not Rafi sahab here.
