Tauba ye matwaali chaal

Mukesh, known for his melancholic songs, sings a romantic song ( Shringaar ras song is an appropriate hindi word) for Manoj Kumar praising the beauty and walk of Mumtaz and Waheeda Rahman. Unlike how a typical Indian lady would react on such an approach, Mumtaz and Waheeda respond with an almost unreal sportingness.
The lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri are a bit heavy duty, and I wonder how many people know the meaning of words like “rang-e- jamaal”, “raanaaiyaan”, etc. Still, the lyrics helped this song become a very popular evergreen song. The music of Laxmikant Pyarelal goes a long way in making this potentially difficult song popular with the masses.

Song- Tauba ye matwaali chaal (Patthar ke sanam) (1967) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Majrooh, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
taubaa ye matwaali chaal,
jhuk jaaye phoolon ki daal
taubaa ye matwaali chaal,
jhuk jaaye phoolon ki daal
chaand aur sooraj aakar maangen,
tujhse rang-e-jamaal
haseenaa! teri misaal kahaan
taubaa ye matwaali chaal,
jhuk jaaye phoolon ki daal
chaand aur sooraj aakar maangen,
tujhse rang-e-jamaal
haseenaa! teri misaal kahaan
taubaa ye matwaali chaal
sitam ye adaaon ki raanaaiyaan hain
sitam ye adaaon ki raanaaiyaan hain
kayaamat hai kyaa teri angdaaiyaan hain
bahaar-e-chaman ho, ghataa ho dhanak ho
bahaar-e-chaman ho, ghataa ho dhanak ho
ye sab teri soorat ki parchhaiyaan hain
ke tan se, udtaa gulaal kahaan
taubaa ye matwaali chaal,
jhuk jaaye phoolon ki daal
chaand aur sooraj aakar maangen,
tujhse rang-e-jamaal
haseenaa! teri misaal kahaan
taubaa ye matwaali chaal
taubaa ye matwaali chaal,
jhuk jaaye phoolon ki daal
taubaa ye matwaali chaal,
jhuk jaaye phoolon ki daal
chaand aur sooraj aakar maangen,
tujhse rang-e-jamaal
haseenaa! teri misaal kahaan
taubaa ye matwaali chaal
hoon main bhi deewaanon kaa ik shahzaadaa
hoon main bhi deewaanon kaa ik shahzaadaa
tujhe dekhakar, ho gayaa kuchh zyaadaa
Khudaa ke liye mat buraa maan jaanaa
Khudaa ke liye mat buraa maan jaanaa
ye lab chhoo liye hain, yoon hi be-iraadaa
nashe mein itnaa khayaal kahaan
taubaa ye matwaali chaal,
jhuk jaaye phoolon ki daal
chaand aur sooraj aakar maangen,
tujhse rang-e-jamaal
haseenaa! teri misaal kahaan
taubaa ye matwaali chaal

As I was listening to this song, I was reminded of two other Mukesh songs that are also favorites of mine:
1. Farishton ki nagari mein main aa gaya hoon … Mukesh from Hamari Yaad Aayegi
2. Ae dil kahan teri manzil … Mukesh from Maaya
and one more:
3. ek raat mein do do chand khile … Mukesh and Lata from Barkha
Three different moods – happy and excited, morose, and finally, romantic – all by Mukesh. I just love the versatility.
Thanks Atul for all the great songs.

Wonderful composition. The standard of Urdu used, so very beautiful. I checked with an Urdu dictionary the meaning of Raanaaee. It means Beauty. Jamaal also means beauty. Light romantic songs, excelling both in melody and quality of lyrics. Superb

Kya gaane the, kya zamana tha…! I wasn’t even born when this song was made but still, while growing up it was one of our favourites!
