Yaad naa jaaye beete dinon ki

Posted on: October 24, 2008

“Dil ek Mandir”, regarded as one of the celebrated melancholic movie in Bollywood industry is full of sad songs to match, almost all of which went on to become very popular and in fact evergreen. I have already posted a couple of songs from this movie in this blog. This movie had one nice song after another coming out as if they were coming out of some assembly line.

The fact that Shankar Jaikishan were the music director and Shailendra the lyricist, and they had the services of the best playback singers of the time ensured that every song that was created out of this collaboration went on to become immortal.

Rafi’s voice sounds as divine as ever. Shailendra’s lyrics and Shankar Jaikishan’s music has helped in making this an immortal song.

As far as I am concerned, I do not think I can bear to watch a movie like this, but I can listen to the songs from this movie any number of times. And I am sure there are many such people. That is how these songs have stayed popular, is it not ?

Song-Yaad na jaaye, beete dinon ki ( Dil Ek Mandir) (1963) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD- Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

yaad na jaaye, beete dinon ki
jaake na aaye jo din, dil kyun bulaaye, unhen
dil kyun bulaaye
yaad na jaaye, beete dinon ki
jaake na aaye jo din, dil kyun bulaaye, unhen
dil kyun bulaaye

din jo pakheroo hote, pinjre mein main rakh letaa
din jo pakheroo hote, pinjre mein main rakh letaa
paaltaa unko jatan se
paaltaa unko jatan se, moti ke daane detaa
seene se rahtaa lagaaye
yaad na jaaye, beete dinon ki
jaake na aaye jo din, dil kyun bulaaye, unhen
dil kyun bulaaye

tasveer unki chhupaake, rakh doon jahaan jee chaahe
tasveer unki chhupaake, rakh doon jahaan jee chaahe
man mein basi ye moorat
man mein basi ye moorat, lekin miti na mitaaye
kahne ko hain wo paraaye
yaad na jaaye, beete dinon ki
jaake na aaye jo din, dil kyun bulaaye, unhen
dil kyun bulaaye
yaad na jaaye, beete dinon ki

Indeed one can listen to the songs of this movie time and time again.

Actually the movie itself is not as bad or rona dhona as it would appear to be. It has a good storyline and performances are good too. I saw it a few years ago and liked it.

It is made by a South Indian director. Those days Rajendra Kumar used to act in quite a few Southie made movies (a bit like Jeetu in the early 80s).

I had this movie on a cassette years ago – its twin movie (on the other side of the cassette) was “Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi”. That movie also had Rajendra Kumar – Meena Kumari. And is also a Shankar Jaikishen movie.
And also had good songs.

I have already posted three songs from this movie, and who knows, it may not be the last. That is the kind of musical block buster this movie was.
