Barkha rani zara jam ke barso

on:There are different songs for different times and moods. When it is time for rains, it is time for love to blossom in Bollywood. That way, I have always felt that the Valentine day (and season) in Bollywood is not in the spring season, but in the rainy season.
Here is a romantic rain song, where the boy fervently hopes that the rain pours so heavily that his beloved is unable to go to her home. This lyric has certainly pulled the right strings in the hearts of the listeners all these days, because this song has become immortal thanks to the catch line “mera dilbar ja na paaye jhoomkar barso”.
While listening to the song, I had the mental picture of the girl cooped up in the home of the boy with the rain pouring in torrents outside. When I finally got to watch the video, I found that the duo were not practicing what they were singing. The two were very much frolicking in the rain, getting drenched in the process. If the idea was to get her so drenched that she was unable to go home in her wet clothes, then well, it was a new interpretation that I never thought about all these decades when I just listened to the song.
Was this song effective in getting its message across ? Very much so, I must say, not only for the listeners, but even for the people involved in creating this song. Look at the duo frolicking in rain. They are Shatrughan Sinha and Poonam. And they indeed got married to each other later.
That is not all. Look at the names of the lyricist and Music director. They too got married to each other later.
That way, this song is a perfect desi style valentine day cum wedding bell song.
PS-An interesting tidbit associated with the song is that the song was initially picturised on Jugal Kishore (producer director) and Jayshree T. But after the release of the movie, the song became extremely popular and public demand forced Jugal Kishore to get the song re picturised on Shatrughan Sinha and Poonam.
Song- Barkha rani zara jam ke barso (Sabak) (1973) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics- Saawan Kumar, MD- Usha Khanna
Lyrics
barkhaa raani, zaraa jam ke barso
meraa dilbar jaa naa paaye, jhoomkar barso
barkhaa raani, zaraa jam ke barso
meraa dilbar jaa naa paaye, jhoomkar barso
barkhaa raani …
ye abhi to aaye hain
kahte hain ham jaayen hain
ye abhi to aaye hain
kahte hain ham jaayen hain
tu baras baraso.n baras
ye umr bhar naa jaaye re
barkhaa raani, zaraa jam ke barso
meraa dilbar jaa naa paaye, jhoomkar barso
barkhaa raani …
mast saawan ki ghataa
bijuriyaa chamkaa zaraa
mast saawan kii ghataa
bijuriyaa chamakaa zaraa
yaar mera darke mere
seene se lag jaaye re
barkhaa raani, zaraa jam ke barso
meraa dilbar jaa naa paaye, jhoomkar barso
barkhaa raani, zaraa jam ke barso
meraa dilbar jaa naa paaye, jhoomkar barso
barkhaa raani …

Thanks for this song, and providing some new informations too. I have seen this video first time.

this song is very much heart touching. Iwas thinking of to listen the song since last five years from my younger brother (now living separately after his marriage)was singing very nicely on the request of one of his female( married) student. So thank you very much from my inner heart.

Atul,
Very interesting facts. I known the song, ( I am huge fan of Mukesh) and MD. but had now idea of picturisation. Just one
more proof that Mukesh’s voice had that magic.
Thanks for posting
Ramesh

Here this song is incomplete without its third antara..

Oh! I never realised that the lyrics meant that at all! Thanks for the small informative write ups that give us the background for songs!sometimes we just listen without completely grasping, and the info makes it much more enjoyable! Also I didn not know Poonam acted before marriage!
